Structural changes in intestinal enteroendocrine cells after ileal interposition in normal rats

INTRODUCTION: No therapeutic approach has significantly impacted the progression of diabetes. As early improvement of glicaemic control is observed after bariatric surgeries, there is currently a search for surgical procedures that can promote euglycemia also in non-obese patients. Glicaemic control can be achieved by increasing the blood concentration of GLP-1, a hormone produced by L cells that are more densely concentrated in the terminal ileum. The interposition of ileal segment to a more anterior region (proximal jejunum) can promote a greater stimulation of the L cells by poorly digested food, increasing the production of GLP-1 and reflecting on glicaemic control.
AIMS: To investigate long-term histological modifications of intestinal mucosa of rats submitted to interposition of ileum segment to a proximal region (jejunum).
METHODS: Forty 8-week old male Wistar-EPM1 rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) were randomly distributed into 3 groups: the Interposition Group (IG) was subjected to ileal interposition, the Sham Group (SG) was subjected to sham operations, and the Control Group (CG) was not subjected to surgery. All animals were followed until the 60th postoperative day (8 postoperative week) when they were euthanized. Segments of jejunum and ileum from all groups were collected and analyzed by optical microscopy and immunohistochemistry.
RESULTS: No structural nor histological changes in intestinal L cells in the interposed intestinal segment and other intestinal segments were noted after ileal interposition surgery.
CONCLUSION: As L cells endocrine characteristics were likely maintained, the use of metabolic surgical techniques for the treatment of metabolic diseases, especially diabetes, seems to be justified

Scalar sigma meson at finite temperature in nonlocal quark model

Properties and temperature behavior of pi and sigma bound states are studied in the framework of the nonlocal model with a separable interaction kernel based on the quark Dyson-Schwinger and the meson Bethe-Salpeter equations. M_pi(T), f_pi(T), M_sigma(T) and Gamma_{sigma -> pi pi}(T) are considered above and below the deconfinement and chiral restoration transitions.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Talk at the Round Table Discussion "Searching for the mixed phase of strongly interacting matter at the JINR Nuclotron", JINR, Dubna, July 7 - 9, 2005. Study of dimuon production in Indium-Indium collisions with the NA60 experiment

The NA60 experiment at the CERN-SPS is devoted to the study of dimuon production in heavy-ion and proton-nucleus collisions. We present preliminary results from the analysis of Indium-Indium collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon. The topics covered are low mass vector meson production, J/psi production and suppression, and the feasibility of the open charm measurement from the dimuon continuum in the mass range below the J/psi peak.Comment: Contribution at XXXXth Rencontres de Moriond, "QCD and High Energy Hadronic Interactions

Photoproduction at collider energies: from RHIC and HERA to the LHC

    Get PDF
We present the mini-proceedings of the workshop on ``Photoproduction at collider energies: from RHIC and HERA to the LHC'' held at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*, Trento) from January 15 to 19, 2007. The workshop gathered both theorists and experimentalists to discuss the current status of investigations of high-energy photon-induced processes at different colliders (HERA, RHIC, and Tevatron) as well as preparations for extension of these studies at the LHC. The main physics topics covered were: (i) small-xx QCD in photoproduction studies with protons and in electromagnetic (aka. ultraperipheral) nucleus-nucleus collisions, (ii) hard diffraction physics at hadron colliders, and (iii) photon-photon collisions at very high energies: electroweak and beyond the Standard Model processes. These mini-proceedings consist of an introduction and short summaries of the talks presented at the meeting

Investigation of selected genomic deletions and duplications in a cohort of 338 patients presenting with syndromic obesity by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification using synthetic probes

Background: Certain rare syndromes with developmental delay or intellectual disability caused by genomic copy number variants (CNVs), either deletions or duplications, are associated with higher rates of obesity. Current strategies to diagnose these syndromes typically rely on phenotype-driven investigation. However, the strong phenotypic overlap between syndromic forms of obesity poses challenges to accurate diagnosis, and many different individual cytogenetic and molecular approaches may be required. Multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) enables the simultaneous analysis of multiple targeted loci in a single test, and serves as an important screening tool for large cohorts of patients in whom deletions and duplications involving specific loci are suspected. Our aim was to design a synthetic probe set for MLPA analysis to investigate in a cohort of 338 patients with syndromic obesity deletions and duplications in genomic regions that can cause this phenotype. Results: We identified 18 patients harboring copy number imbalances; 18 deletions and 5 duplications. the alterations in ten patients were delineated by chromosomal microarrays, and in the remaining cases by additional MLPA probes incorporated into commercial kits. Nine patients showed deletions in regions of known microdeletion syndromes with obesity as a clinical feature: in 2q37 (4 cases), 9q34 (1 case) and 17p11.2 (4 cases). Four patients harbored CNVs in the DiGeorge syndrome locus at 22q11.2. Two other patients had deletions within the 22q11.2 'distal' locus associated with a variable clinical phenotype and obesity in some individuals. the other three patients had a recurrent CNV of one of three susceptibility loci: at 1q21.1 'distal', 16p11.2 'distal', and 16p11.2 'proximal'.Conclusions: Our study demonstrates the utility of an MLPA-based first line screening test to the evaluation of obese patients presenting with syndromic features. the overall detection rate with the synthetic MLPA probe set was about 5.3% (18 out of 338). Our experience leads us to suggest that MLPA could serve as an effective alternative first line screening test to chromosomal microarrays for diagnosis of syndromic obesity, allowing for a number of loci (e.g., 1p36, 2p25, 2q37, 6q16, 9q34, 11p14, 16p11.2, 17p11.2), known to be clinically relevant for this patient population, to be interrogated simultaneously.Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Univ São Paulo, Inst Biosci, Dept Genet & Evolutionary Biol, Human Genome & Stem Cell Ctr, São Paulo, BrazilUniv São Paulo, Sch Med, Children Inst, Genet Unit,Dept Pediat, São Paulo, BrazilUniv São Paulo, Sch Med, Dept Med Genet, Neurogenet Unit, BR-14049 Ribeirao Preto, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Ctr Med Genet, Dept Morphol, São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Ctr Med Genet, Dept Morphol, São Paulo, BrazilFAPESP: 09/52523-1FAPESP: 1998/14254-2CNPq: 304381/2007-1Web of Scienc

The need for conservation management in European 19th century urban housing

The prediction of the dynamic response of Unreinforced Masonry Structures (URMS) is a very complex task, since it is governed by material degradation and cyclic hysteric behaviour. Procedures based on nonlinear static analyses have been proposed for the seismic assessment of URMS, without properly considering hysteretic energy dissipation during the dynamic response. Even though dynamic nonlinear analyses provide satisfactory simulations of the seismic response, its application requires considerable computational effort and high user expertise for the accurate definition of the material properties, making it unsuitable for practical applications. However, simplified macro-element strategies, capable of simulating in-plane and outof-plane nonlinear responses, could represent a satisfactory engineering solution in the dynamic context. In this study the nonlinear static and dynamic in-plane behaviour of URMS was assessed by means of plane discrete models. The preliminary numerical investigation evidenced the need to define suitable hysteric constitutive laws for reliable nonlinear dynamic analyses of URMS.(undefined

First results from the NA60 experiment at CERN

Since 1986, several heavy ion experiments have studied some signatures of the formation of the quark-gluon plasma and a few exciting results have been found. However, some important questions are still unanswered and require new measurements. The NA60 experiment, with a new detector concept that vastly improves dimuon detection in proton-nucleus and heavy-ion collisions, studies several of those open questions, including the production of open charm. This paper presents the experiment and some first results from data collected in 2002.Comment: Paper presented at the XXXVIII Rencontres de Moriond, QCD and High Energy Hadronic Interactions, Les Arcs, March 22-29, 2003. 4 pages, 6 figure
