Study of psi' and chi_c decays as feed-down sources of J/psi hadro-production

The interpretation of the J/psi suppression patterns observed in nuclear collisions, at CERN and RHIC, as a signature of the formation of a deconfined phase of QCD matter, requires knowing which fractions of the measured J/psi yields, in pp collisions, are due to decays of heavier charmonium states. From a detailed analysis of the available mid-rapidity charmonium hadro-production cross sections, or their ratios, we determine that the J/psi feed-down contributions from psi' and chi_c decays are, respectively, (8.1 +/- 0.3) % and (25 +/- 5) %. These proton-proton values are derived from global averages of the proton-nucleus measurements, assuming that the charmonium states are exponentially absorbed with the length of matter they traverse in the nuclear targets.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 3 table

Bad semidefinite programs: they all look the same

Conic linear programs, among them semidefinite programs, often behave pathologically: the optimal values of the primal and dual programs may differ, and may not be attained. We present a novel analysis of these pathological behaviors. We call a conic linear system Ax<=bAx <= b {\em badly behaved} if the value of supAx<=b\sup { | A x <= b } is finite but the dual program has no solution with the same value for {\em some} c.c. We describe simple and intuitive geometric characterizations of badly behaved conic linear systems. Our main motivation is the striking similarity of badly behaved semidefinite systems in the literature; we characterize such systems by certain {\em excluded matrices}, which are easy to spot in all published examples. We show how to transform semidefinite systems into a canonical form, which allows us to easily verify whether they are badly behaved. We prove several other structural results about badly behaved semidefinite systems; for example, we show that they are in NPcoNPNP \cap co-NP in the real number model of computing. As a byproduct, we prove that all linear maps that act on symmetric matrices can be brought into a canonical form; this canonical form allows us to easily check whether the image of the semidefinite cone under the given linear map is closed.Comment: For some reason, the intended changes between versions 4 and 5 did not take effect, so versions 4 and 5 are the same. So version 6 is the final version. The only difference between version 4 and version 6 is that 2 typos were fixed: in the last displayed formula on page 6, "7" was replaced by "1"; and in the 4th displayed formula on page 12 "A_1 - A_2 - A_3" was replaced by "A_3 - A_2 - A_1

Avaliação da sustentabilidade dos recursos naturais em área de várzea na região do Paraná de Parintins.

    Get PDF

A generalized program verification workflow based on loop elimination and SA form

    Get PDF
This paper presents a minimal model of the functioning of program verification and property checking tools based on (i) the encoding of loops as non-iterating programs, either conservatively, making use of invariants and assume/assert commands, or in a bounded way; and (ii) the use of an intermediate single-assignment (SA) form. The model captures the basic workflow of tools like Boogie, Why3, or CBMC, building on a clear distinction between operational and axiomatic semantics. This allows us to consider separately the soundness of program annotation, loop encoding, translation into SA form, and VC generation, as well as appropriate notions of completeness for each of these processes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first formalization of a bounded model checking of software technique, including soundness and completeness proofs using Hoare logic; we also give the first completeness proof of a deductive verification technique based on a conservative encoding of invariant-annotated loops with assume/assert in SA form, as well as the first soundness proof based on a program logic. This work is partially financed by the ERDF – European RegionalDevelopment Fund through the Operational Programme for Com-petitiveness and Internationalisation - COMPETE 2020 Programmewithin project ‘POCI-01-0145-FEDER-006961’, and by NationalFunds through the Portuguese funding agency, FCT - Fundação para aCiência e a Tecnologia as part of project ‘UID/EEA/50014/2013’.
