    Operational modal analysis for the characterization of ancient water towers in Pompeii

    In the framework of an investigation campaign carried out in June 2015 by the authors on four ancient water towers (10\u201320 BC) in the archaeological site of Pompeii, modal analysis and output-only identification techniques were employed to extract the dynamic properties in order to assess structural vulnerabilities and support numerical model updating. The four investigated towers (selected among the fourteen present within the archaeological site) are free-standing structures at least 6 m tall, belonging to the Castellum Aquae, i.e. the ancient aqueducts system of the city. During the Roman Age, until the destruction of Pompeii due to the volcanic eruption in 79 AD, water towers provided fresh water to houses, palaces and villas. This particular type of structures are classified as no. 1, 2, 3 and 4 by archaeological literature: no. 1 and 4 are made of soft stone masonry (tuff, limestone), while no. 2 and 3 are composed by brickwork masonry. The paper reports the outcomes of ambient vibration tests performed on four towers in terms of extracted modal parameters using various operational modal analysis techniques. Obtained data are then used to study numerically the soil-structure interaction problem and implement model updating procedures

    New Star Forming Galaxies at z\approx 7 from WFC3 Imaging

    The addition of Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has led to a dramatic increase in our ability to study the z>6 Universe. The increase in the near-infrared (NIR) sensitivity of WFC3 over previous instruments has enabled us to reach apparent magnitudes approaching 29 (AB). This allows us to probe the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum, redshifted into the NIR at z>6z>6. Taking advantage of the large optical depths at this redshift, resulting in the Lyman-alpha break, we use a combination of WFC3 imaging and pre-existing Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) imaging to search for z approx 7 over 4 fields. Our analysis reveals 29 new z approx 7 star forming galaxy candidates in addition to 16 pre-existing candidates already discovered in these fields. The improved statistics from our doubling of the robust sample of z-drop candidates confirms the previously observed evolution of the bright end of the luminosity function.Comment: 15 pages, accepted in MNRA

    Calibration of the dynamic behaviour of incomplete structures in archeological sites: The case of Villa Diomede portico in Pompeii

    This paper reports the research activities carried out on Villa Diomede in Pompeii, built during the "Pre-Roman period" (i.e. the 3rd century BC) and discovered between 1771 and 1774 during the archaeological excavations. It is one of the greatest private buildings of Pompeii and it is located on the western corner of the modern archeological site. Three levels compose the building: the ground floor, the lower quadriportico with a square plan and a series of colonnades on the four sides around the inner garden and the cryptoportico. Villa Diomede was damaged by the strong earthquake occurred in AD 63 that caused the collapse of the western pillars of the quadriportico and later damaged after the big eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. In June 2015 a series of nondestructive tests (NDT) were carried out by the authors in order to obtain information on the state of conservation of the building and to assess its structural behavior. Direct and tomographic sonic pulse velocity tests, ground penetrating radar, endoscopies and operational modal analysis were performed on the remaining structural elements on the two levels of the Villa. The present paper reports the main outcomes and findings of ambient vibration tests implemented to extract the modal parameters in terms of eigenfrequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. Operational modal analysis and output-only identification techniques were applied to single stone pillars of the quadriportico structure and then to the entire square colonnade of Villa Diomede. Results are then used to study the soil-structure interaction at a local level and extend the gained information for the numerical calibration of the whole structure. Thanks to this methodology a detailed model updating procedure of the quadriportico was performed to develop reliable numerical models for the implementation of advance structural and seismic analysis of this "incomplete" archaeological structure

    The ultraviolet properties of star-forming galaxies - I. HST WFC3 observations of very high redshift galaxies

    The acquisition of deep near-IR imaging with Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope has provided the opportunity to study the very high redshift Universe. For galaxies up to z≈ 7.7 sufficient wavelength coverage exists to probe the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum without contamination from either Lyman α emission or the Lyman α break. In this work we use near-infrared (near-IR) imaging to measure the rest-frame UV continuum colours of galaxies at 4.7 < z < 7.7. We have carefully defined a colour–colour selection to minimize any inherent bias in the measured UV continuum slope for the drop-out samples. For the highest redshift sample (6.7 < z < 7.7), selected as zf850lp-band drop-outs, we find mean UV continuum colours approximately equal to zero (AB), consistent with a dust-free, solar metallicity, star-forming population (or a moderately dusty population of low metallicity). At lower redshift we find that the mean UV continuum colours of galaxies (over the same luminosity range) are redder, and that galaxies with higher luminosities are also slightly redder on average. One interpretation of this is that lower redshift and more luminous galaxies are dustier; however, this interpretation is complicated by the effects of the star formation history and metallicity and potentially the initial mass function on the UV continuum colours

    In the sedimentary basin of Rieti (Central Italy) a Mollic Fragiudalf was studied in order to verify, through the analysis of differential dissolution kinetics of Si and Al, wether the presence of this two elements could be involved in determining the fragic characters of its deep horizons. The reuslts of the main physico-chemical analysis confirmed the fragic features of the deep horizons Bt3x and Ctgx which have been already observed in the field study. Differential dissolution of Si and Al was performed using 0,5 N NaOH at 25°C, and the values of silica and alumina obtained after each of ten consecutive extractions were cumulated to trace the cumulative curves of dissolution. Slope changes of the curves, which indicate changes in dissolution rate, allowed os to recognize three mineralogical phases with different degree of solubility. The total quantity of SiO2 and Al2O3 dissolved in all the extractions and relative to each of these three phases was estimated, by a graphic method, together with SiO2(Al2O3 molar ratio. This one was indicative of the mineralogical composition and behaviour of each horizon. This study showed an accumulation of free silica which could be present in the form of phytoliths or diatoms as well as a fine precipitate of opal-A and silica-gel in the whole soil, mainly in teh Ap and Ctgx horizons. Moreover neogenesis of clay was more evident in Bt3x horizon. The volcanic origin of the parent material, a trachytic ash fall, probably deposited in a lacustrine environment, could have favoured the availability of Si and the authigenic formation of halloysitic clay from the weathering of galss and feldspars. Our study therefore corroborates the findings of previous studies by Chadwick et al. (1987) and Karathanasis (1989) indicating the important role played by silica, probably as bonding agent, in contributing to produce characteristics of a fragipan. (Résumé d'auteur)

    Scanning probe oxidation of SiC, fabrication possibilities and kinetics considerations

Oxide thickness can be easily tuned by varying applied voltage and pulse duration. The height and the aspect ratio of single dots produced by single DC pulses are remarkably higher than what was reported previously, with self limiting heights exceeding 100 nm. We propose that the diminished density and the change in chemical composition of the oxide grown on SiC with respect to oxide grown under similar condition on Si cause a drop in the activation energy of oxanions diffusion within the newly formed oxide layer.This work was entirely supported by the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT

    Anchor entrepreneurship and industry catalysis: The rise of the Italian Biomedical Valley

    Accounting for the rise of the medical device industry in the Emilia-Romagna town of Mirandola from a once depressed agricultural area in 1962 to a world-manufacturing center for dialysis equipment and disposable plastic medical devices, requires in large measure mapping the methods of the local entrepreneur who spearheaded its development. Reworking Agrawal and Cockburn's anchor-tenant hypothesis highlighting the role of large organizations in fostering agglomerations, this paper privileges the Schumpeterian entrepreneur as the dynamic force driving new industrial formations. This anchor-entrepreneur with no prior experience in manufacturing medical devices and without any public financing or large private backers founded six firms. Each of these would be sold off fairly quickly to a different large multinational corporation. Placing the anchor-entrepreneur at the center stage advances understanding of early industry evolution, spelling out how first-mover pioneers shape the environment to establish the first markets needed to attract new resources and capabilities. Underpinning our argument are 61 fine-grain interviews with key medical device industry informants in addition to extensive secondary sources and historical records. We draw on this material to induce a stylized model of anchor-entrepreneurship and industry catalysis that rests on three generative processes: bricolage, second-hand imprinting and beaconing

    Spectroscopy of z ~ 7 candidate galaxies: using Lyman α to constrain the neutral fraction of hydrogen in the high-redshift universe

    Following our previous spectroscopic observations of z > 7 galaxies with Gemini/Gemini Near Infra-Red Spectrograph (GNIRS) and Very Large Telescope (VLT)/XSHOOTER, which targeted a total of eight objects, we present here our results from a deeper and larger VLT/FOcal Reducer and Spectrograph (FORS2) spectroscopic sample of Wide Field Camera 3 selected z > 7 candidate galaxies. With our FORS2 setup we cover the 737–1070 nm wavelength range, enabling a search for Lyman α in the redshift range spanning 5.06–7.80. We target 22 z-band dropouts and find no evidence of Lyman α emission, with the exception of a tentative detection (<5σ, which is our adopted criterion for a secure detection) for one object. The upper limits on Lyman α flux and the broad-band magnitudes are used to constrain the rest-frame equivalent widths for this line emission. We analyse our FORS2 observations in combination with our previous GNIRS and XSHOOTER observations, and suggest that a simple model where the fraction of high rest-frame equivalent width emitters follows the trend seen at z = 3-6.5 is inconsistent with our non-detections at z ∼ 7.8 at the 96 per cent confidence level. This may indicate that a significant neutral H I fraction in the intergalactic medium suppresses Lyman α, with an estimated neutral fraction χHI∼0.5, in agreement with other estimates
