    Termite (Isoptera) Diversity in a Gallery Forests Relict in the Colombian Eastern Plains

    Termites are a key group for the dynamics of gallery forests in the Colombian Orinoco region, but have been little studied. Richness and relative abundance of termites found in protected gallery forest fragments within commercial forest plantations were quantified. Sampling was conducted at three sites surrounding the creeks “Huerta La Grande”, “Caño Claro” and “Caño Los Micos”, along linear transects 50 m long and divided into five 5 × 2 m plots; there were nine transects and 45 plots. Termite sampling involved the examination of fallen branches, pieces of wood in contact with the soil, arboreal termitaria, epigeal nests and soil samples 20 cm deep (four per plot). Thirty morphospecies, mostly xylophages from the families Termitidae (Apicotermitinae, Termitinae, Nasutitermitinae, Syntermitinae) and Rhinotermitidae (Heterotermitinae), were found. No association was found between richness or termite abundance and tree size, soil pH, soil organic carbon content or accumulation depth of leaf litter on the soil. The termite diversity and abundance found in fragments of gallery forest highlights the importance of maintaining this type of vegetation to preserve the ecosystem services derived from the biological activity of termites. Keywords: Heterotermes convexinotatus, Microcerotermes, Conservation, Orinoquia, Species richnes

    Assessment of Soybean Oil Oxidative Stability from Rapid Analysis of its Minor Component Profile

    The minor components of vegetable oils are important for their oxidative stability. In order to know to what extent they can influence oil behaviour under oxidative conditions, two commercial soybean oils, one virgin and the other refined, both with very similar compositions in acyl groups but differing in their minor component profiles, were subjected to accelerated storage conditions. They were characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and direct immersion solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (DI-SPME-GC/MS), while oil oxidation was monitored by 1H-NMR. The lower levels of tocols and sterols in the virgin oil, together with its higher free fatty acid content when compared to the refined one, result in a lower oxidative stability. This is deduced from faster degradation of acyl groups and earlier generation of hydroperoxides, epoxides, and aldehydes in the virgin oil. These findings reveal that commercial virgin soybean oil quality is not necessarily higher than that of the refined type, and that a simple and rapid analysis of oil minor components by DI-SPME-GC/MS would enable one to establish quality levels within oils originating from the same plant species and similar unsaturation level regarding composition in potentially bioactive compounds and oxidative stability.This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO, AGL2015-65450-R, AEI/FEDER-EU) and by the Basque Government and its Departments of Universities and Research (EJ-GV, IT-916-16)

    Different Effects of Vitamin C-Based Supplements on the Advance of Linseed Oil Component Oxidation and Lipolysis during In Vitro Gastrointestinal Digestion

    Although widely consumed, dietary supplements based on Vitamin C contain high doses of this compound, whose impact on lipid oxidation during digestion needs to be addressed. Therefore, the effect of seven commercial supplements and of pure l-ascorbic acid and ascorbyl palmitate on linseed oil during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion was tackled. The advance of lipid oxidation was studied through the generation of oxidation compounds, the degradation of polyunsaturated fatty acyl chains and of gamma-tocopherol, by employing Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Supplements containing exclusively l-ascorbic acid enhanced the advance of linseed oil oxidation during digestion. This was evidenced by increased formation of linolenic-derived conjugated hydroxy-dienes and alkanals and by the generation of conjugated keto-dienes and reactive alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes, such as 4,5-epoxy-2-alkenals; moreover, gamma-tocopherol was completely degraded. Conversely, supplements composed of mixtures of ascorbic acid/salt with citric acid and carotenes, and of ascorbyl palmitate, protected linseed oil against oxidation and reduced gamma-tocopherol degradation. The study through Solid Phase Microextraction-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry of the volatile compounds of the digests corroborated these findings. Furthermore, a decreased lipid bioaccessibility was noticed in the presence of the highest dose of l-ascorbic acid.     1H NMR Study of the In Vitro Digestion of Highly Oxidized Soybean Oil and the Effect of the Presence of Ovalbumin

    Oxidized lipids containing a wide variety of potentially toxic compounds can be ingested through diet. However, their transformations during digestion are little known, despite this knowledge being essential in understanding their impact on human health. Considering this, the in vitro digestion process of highly oxidized soybean oil, containing compounds bearing hydroperoxy, aldehyde, epoxy, keto- and hydroxy groups, among others, is studied by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance. Lipolysis extent, oxidation occurrence and the fate of oxidation products both present in the undigested oil and formed during digestion are analyzed. Furthermore, the effect during digestion of two different ovalbumin proportions on all the aforementioned issues is also addressed. It is proved that polyunsaturated group bioaccessibility is affected by both a decrease in lipolysis and oxidation occurrence during digestion. While hydroperoxide level declines throughout this process, epoxy-compounds, keto-dienes, hydroxy-compounds, furan-derivatives and n-alkanals persist to a great extent or even increase. Conversely, α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, especially the very reactive and toxic oxygenated ones, diminish, although part of them remains in the digestates.     Probiotic Bacteria Induce Maturation of Intestinal Claudin 3 Expression and Barrier Function

    An immature intestinal epithelial barrier may predispose infants and children to many intestinal inflammatory diseases, such as infectious enteritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and necrotizing enterocolitis. Understanding the factors that regulate gut barrier maturation may yield insight into strategies to prevent these intestinal diseases. The claudin family of tight junction proteins plays an important role in regulating epithelial paracellular permeability. Previous reports demonstrate that rodent intestinal barrier function matures during the first 3 weeks of life. We show that murine paracellular permeability markedly decreases during postnatal maturation, with the most significant change occurring between 2 and 3 weeks. Here we report for the first time that commensal bacterial colonization induces intestinal barrier function maturation by promoting claudin 3 expression. Neonatal mice raised on antibiotics or lacking the toll-like receptor adaptor protein MyD88 exhibit impaired barrier function and decreased claudin 3 expression. Furthermore, enteral administration of either live or heat-killed preparations of the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG accelerates intestinal barrier maturation and induces claudin 3 expression. However, live Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG increases mortality. Taken together, these results support a vital role for intestinal flora in the maturation of intestinal barrier function. Probiotics may prevent intestinal inflammatory diseases by regulating intestinal tight junction protein expression and barrier function. The use of heat-killed probiotics may provide therapeutic benefit while minimizing adverse effects

    This research project aims to describe the relationship between perceived Emotional Intelligence and Academic Performance in third semester students of the Civil Engineering program of the Universidad de la Costa Corporation. Due to the characteristics of the research, it was oriented to a mixed approach and with a descriptive scope, directed under a non-experimental transactional design. The sampling was of probabilistic type with a representative sample of 122 students. To measure the index of perceived Emotional Intelligence, the TMMS-24 test of Adaptación de Fernández-Berrocal, P., Extremera, N. y Ramos, N. (2004) was used as an instrument; and for Academic Performance, the final semester average of the sample was taken into account. In order to evaluate the relationship between the variables, the statistical program SPSS was used, where it was obtained as a result that the dimensions of greater relationship with low academic performance are high emotional clarity with an inverse relationship and low emotional repair with a proportional relationship. Finally, it was concluded that when describing the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic performance, it was found that there is a relationship between these variables.El presente proyecto de investigación pretende describir la relación que tiene la Inteligencia Emocional percibida con el Rendimiento Académico en los estudiantes de tercer semestre del programa de Ingeniería Civil de la Corporación Universidad de la Costa. Por las características de la investigación se orientó a un enfoque mixto con un alcance descriptivo, encaminada bajo un diseño no experimental de corte transaccional. El muestreo fue de tipo probabilístico con una muestra representativa de 122 estudiantes. Para medir el índice de la Inteligencia Emocional percibida se utilizó como instrumento la prueba TMMS-24 Adaptación de Fernández-Berrocal, P., Extremera, N. y Ramos, N. (2004); y para el Rendimiento Académico se tuvo en cuenta el promedio final del semestre de la muestra. Para evaluar la relación entre las variables se utilizó el programa estadístico SPSS donde se obtuvo como resultado que las dimensiones de mayor relación con el rendimiento académico bajo son la claridad emocional alta con una relación inversa y la reparación emocional baja con una relación proporcional. Finalmente se concluyó que al realizar la descripción de la relación entre la inteligencia emocional y el rendimiento académico, se encontró que sí existe una relación entre estas variables

    The Undergraduate Training in Genomics (UTRIG) Initiative: Early & Active Training for Physicians in the Genomic Medicine Era

    Genomic medicine is transforming patient care. However, the speed of development has left a knowledge gap between discovery and effective implementation into clinical practice. Since 2010, the Training Residents in Genomics (TRIG) Working Group has found success in building a rigorous genomics curriculum with implementation tools aimed at pathology residents in postgraduate training years 1-4. Based on the TRIG model, the interprofessional Undergraduate Training in Genomics (UTRIG) Working Group was formed. Under the aegis of the Undergraduate Medical Educators Section of the Association of Pathology Chairs and representation from nine additional professional societies, UTRIG\u27s collaborative goal is building medical student genomic literacy through development of a ready-to-use genomics curriculum.     Preclinical models for prediction of immunotherapy outcomes and immune evasion mechanisms in genetically heterogeneous multiple myeloma

    The historical lack of preclinical models reflecting the genetic heterogeneity of multiple myeloma (MM) hampers the advance of therapeutic discoveries. To circumvent this limitation, we screened mice engineered to carry eight MM lesions (NF-κB, KRAS, MYC, TP53, BCL2, cyclin D1, MMSET/NSD2 and c-MAF) combinatorially activated in B lymphocytes following T cell-driven immunization. Fifteen genetically diverse models developed bone marrow (BM) tumors fulfilling MM pathogenesis. Integrative analyses of ∼500 mice and ∼1,000 patients revealed a common MAPK-MYC genetic pathway that accelerated time to progression from precursor states across genetically heterogeneous MM. MYC-dependent time to progression conditioned immune evasion mechanisms that remodeled the BM microenvironment differently. Rapid MYC-driven progressors exhibited a high number of activated/exhausted CD8+ T cells with reduced immunosuppressive regulatory T (Treg) cells, while late MYC acquisition in slow progressors was associated with lower CD8+ T cell infiltration and more abundant Treg cells. Single-cell transcriptomics and functional assays defined a high ratio of CD8+ T cells versus Treg cells as a predictor of response to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB). In clinical series, high CD8+ T/Treg cell ratios underlie early progression in untreated smoldering MM, and correlated with early relapse in newly diagnosed patients with MM under Len/Dex therapy. In ICB-refractory MM models, increasing CD8+ T cell cytotoxicity or depleting Treg cells reversed immunotherapy resistance and yielded prolonged MM control. Our experimental models enable the correlation of MM genetic and immunological traits with preclinical therapy responses, which may inform the next-generation immunotherapy trials
