The tidally disturbed luminous compact blue galaxy Mkn 1087 and its surroundings

We present new broad-band optical and near-infrared CCD imaging together with deep optical intermediate-resolution spectroscopy of Mkn 1087 and its surrounding objects. We analyze the morphology and colors of the stellar populations of the brightest objects, some of them star-formation areas, as well as the kinematics, physical conditions and chemical composition of the ionized gas associated with them. Mkn 1087 does not host an Active Galactic Nucleus, but it could be a Luminous Compact Blue Galaxy. Although it was classified as a suspected Wolf-Rayet galaxy, we do not detect the spectral features of these sort of massive stars. Mkn 1087 shows morphological and kinematical features that can be explained assuming that it is in interaction with two nearby galaxies: the bright KPG 103a and a dwarf (MB18M_B\sim-18) star-forming companion. We argue that this dwarf companion is not a tidal object but an external galaxy because of its low metallicity [12+log(O/H) = 8.24] with respect to the one derived for Mkn 1087 [12+log(O/H) = 8.57] and its kinematics. Some of the non-stellar objects surrounding Mkn 1087 are connected by bridges of matter with the main body, host star-formation events and show similar abundances despite their different angular distances. These facts, together their kinematics, suggest that they are tidal dwarf galaxies formed from material stripped from Mkn 1087. A bright star-forming region at the south of Mkn 1087 (knot #7) does not show indications of being a tidal galaxy or the product of a merging process as suggested in previous works. We argue that Mkn 1087 and its surroundings should be considered a group of galaxies.Comment: Accepted by A&A, 21 pages, 13 figures, 8 table

The objective of this study was to collect and analyze scientific literature as well as reports from health technology assessment agencies regarding the effectiveness and safety of the use of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) as a therapy for critically ill adult patients (cardiac failure and respiratory failure) as well as the use of ECMO as an alternative to conventional CPR techniques. An overview of the principle of operation of the technology is presented and so is an overview of the indications, counter-indications, complications and recommendations for its use. Methods: scientific literature databases such as Medline (via PubMed), The Cochrane Library, University of York Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD) as well as Health Technology Assessment agencies’ websites (Comité d’Évaluation des Technologies de Santé (CEDIT), Agence Canadienne des Médicaments et des Technologies de la Santé (ACMTS), Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS), Health Improvement Scottland (HIS), National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)) sites were consulted. The search was limited to health technology assessment reports, systematic reviews, meta-analysis, reviews and clinical guidelines, published between January 1, 2005 and October 22, 2015 in English or French. iii Results: Eight articles were selected for the analysis of the effectiveness and safety of ECMO to treat critical but potentially reversible heart and lung conditions. Other articles, such as interventional overview articles, recommendations by specialized organizations, guidelines published as recommendations, etc., were also retained to extract information regarding the indications and counter-indications of the treatment as well as the recommendations during the use of the equipment. Conclusions: In general, the authors share the idea that the data available is not strong enough to sustain irrefutably the use of ECMO, being it in the case of respiratory complications or cardiac complications. The developments in the technology as well as ongoing studies could allow to give a conclusive point of view regarding the benefits (or absence of) of this technology compared to conventional techniques as well as to better understand the specific conditions for which it would be the best choice

The influence of CoCl2 and CdCl2 on the activity of isocitratlyase, malatsynthase and succinate dehydrogenase in the seedlobes at early stages of germination of soybean seeds was investigated. CoCl2 increased isocitratlyase activity at 3-d day and CdCl2 suppressed isocitratlyase activity at the 1-st day. Salt of metals has no influence on malatsynthase activity. CoCl2 and CdCl2 suppressed succinate dehydrogenase activity at 5-th day that may be caused by oxidative stress

The development of this project aims to find strategies that allow effective and efficient personnel selection processes within the organization, which would allow finding the right candidate for each job and thus not generating staff turnover. layoffs and resignations. The method that will be used in this research is quantitative according to the needs of the study, which is to show the number of people who enter the companies, how many adapt, how many resign and how many people are fired for not complying with the requirements and functions of the cargo for which they are contracted. In addition, quantitative research allows us to confirm, measure and test strategies for the problem that currently arises in the process of recruitment and selection of personnel in the organization. To collect the necessary data, it will be carried out through the method of interview, observation, and surveys, which will be able to analyze the positive and negative data. In the results obtained from the survey, it was evidenced that when posting vacancies, the information on the profiles that is required at the time is not clear, which does not allow the candidate to identify whether or not he is suitable for the job. , a shortcoming that is evident at the time of conducting the interviews is that some questions do not match the vacancy for which the candidate is applying. The majority of those surveyed indicate that the company complies with the conditions established in the labor contract, in addition, a fundamental part of any company is the work environment, to which the respondents indicate that it is good. However, they can be improved in aspects such as salary, work environment and motivation. In relation to the above, it is clear that strategies must be implemented that allow an adequate development of human talent, which would be to previously define the vacancies and required profiles, design the questions that will be asked in the interview to collect the necessary information to choose the candidate according to the vacancy, implement the incentive program, fully comply with the conditions established in the employment contract and maintain a good work environment

An Unusual Transmission Spectrum for the Sub-Saturn KELT-11b Suggestive of a Sub-Solar Water Abundance

We present an optical-to-infrared transmission spectrum of the inflated sub-Saturn KELT-11b measured with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 G141 spectroscopic grism, and the Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer) at 3.6 μ\mum, in addition to a Spitzer 4.5 μ\mum secondary eclipse. The precise HST transmission spectrum notably reveals a low-amplitude water feature with an unusual shape. Based on free retrieval analyses with varying molecular abundances, we find strong evidence for water absorption. Depending on model assumptions, we also find tentative evidence for other absorbers (HCN, TiO, and AlO). The retrieved water abundance is generally 0.1×\lesssim 0.1\times solar (0.001--0.7×\times solar over a range of model assumptions), several orders of magnitude lower than expected from planet formation models based on the solar system metallicity trend. We also consider chemical equilibrium and self-consistent 1D radiative-convective equilibrium model fits and find they too prefer low metallicities ([M/H]2[M/H] \lesssim -2, consistent with the free retrieval results). However, all the retrievals should be interpreted with some caution since they either require additional absorbers that are far out of chemical equilibrium to explain the shape of the spectrum or are simply poor fits to the data. Finally, we find the Spitzer secondary eclipse is indicative of full heat redistribution from KELT-11b's dayside to nightside, assuming a clear dayside. These potentially unusual results for KELT-11b's composition are suggestive of new challenges on the horizon for atmosphere and formation models in the face of increasingly precise measurements of exoplanet spectra.Comment: Accepted to The Astronomical Journal. 31 pages, 20 figures, 7 table

Parenteral Nutrition: Current Use, Complications, and Nutrition Delivery in Critically Ill Patients

Background: Parenteral nutrition (PN) is needed to avoid the development of malnutrition when enteral nutrition (EN) is not possible. Our main aim was to assess the current use, complications, and nutrition delivery associated with PN administration in adult critically ill patients, especially when used early and as the initial route. We also assessed the differences between patients who received only PN and those in whom EN was initiated after PN (PN-EN). Methods: A multicenter (n = 37) prospective observational study was performed. Patient clinical characteristics, outcomes, and nutrition-related variables were recorded. Statistical differences between subgroups were analyzed accordingly. Results: From the entire population (n = 629), 186 (29.6%) patients received PN as initial nutrition therapy. Of these, 74 patients (11.7%) also received EN during their ICU stay (i.e., PNEN subgroup). PN was administered early (<48 h) in the majority of patients (75.3%; n = 140) and the mean caloric (19.94 +/- 6.72 Kcal/kg/day) and protein (1.01 +/- 0.41 g/kg/day) delivery was similar to other contemporary studies. PN showed similar nutritional delivery when compared with the enteral route. No significant complications were associated with the use of PN. Thirty-two patients (43.3%) presented with EN-related complications in the PN-EN subgroup but received a higher mean protein delivery (0.95 +/- 0.43 vs 1.17 +/- 0.36 g/kg/day; p = 0.03) compared with PN alone. Once adjusted for confounding factors, patients who received PN alone had a lower mean protein intake (hazard ratio (HR): 0.29; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.18-0.47; p = 0.001), shorter ICU stay (HR: 0.96; 95% CI: 0.91-0.99; p = 0.008), and fewer days on mechanical ventilation (HR: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.81-0.89; p = 0.001) compared with the PN-EN subgroup. Conclusion: The parenteral route may be safe, even when administered early, and may provide adequate nutrition delivery. Additional EN, when possible, may optimize protein requirements, especially in more severe patients who received initial PN and are expected to have longer ICU stays. NCT Registry: 03634943

Massive star formation and tidal structures in HCG 31

We present new broad-band optical and near-infrared CCD imaging together with deep optical intermediate-resolution spectroscopy of the Hickson Compact Group 31. We analyze the morphology and colors of the stellar populations of the galaxies, as well as the kinematics, physical conditions and chemical composition of the ionized gas in order to get a more complete view on the origin and evolution of the system. We estimate the ages of the most recent star formation bursts of the system, finding an excellent consistency among the values obtained with different indicators and starburst models. We find that member F hosts the youngest starburst of the group, showing a substantial population of Wolf-Rayet stars. The chemical abundances are fairly similar in all the members of the group despite their very different absolute magnitudes. We argue that the use of traditional metallicity-luminosity relations based on the absolute BB-magnitude is not appropriate for dwarf starburst galaxies, because their luminosity is dominated by the transient contribution of the starburst to the blue luminosity. We think that members E and F of the group are candidate tidal dwarf galaxies because of their high metallicity, their kinematics, and the absence of underlying old stellar populations. Finally, we propose that HCG~31 is suffering several almost simultaneous interaction processes. The most relevant of these processes are: (a) the merging of members A and C, that would have produced two optical tidal tails; and (b) a fly-by encounter between G and the A+C complex, that would have produced an \ion{H}{1} tidal tail from the stripping of the external gas of A+C, from which members F and E have originated.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS, 41 pages, 15 figures, 9 table

Obstetric outcomes of sars-cov-2 infection in asymptomatic pregnant women

Altres ajuts: Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER)Around two percent of asymptomatic women in labor test positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in Spain. Families and care providers face childbirth with uncertainty. We determined if SARS-CoV-2 infection at delivery among asymptomatic mothers had different obstetric outcomes compared to negative patients. This was a multicenter prospective study based on universal antenatal screening for SARS-CoV-2 infection. A total of 42 hospitals tested women admitted for delivery using polymerase chain reaction, from March to May 2020. We included positive mothers and a sample of negative mothers asymptomatic throughout the antenatal period, with 6-week postpartum follow-up. Association between SARS-CoV-2 and obstetric outcomes was evaluated by multivariate logistic regression analyses. In total, 174 asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 positive pregnancies were compared with 430 asymptomatic negative pregnancies. No differences were observed between both groups in key maternal and neonatal outcomes at delivery and follow-up, with the exception of prelabor rupture of membranes at term (adjusted odds ratio 1.88, 95% confidence interval 1.13-3.11; p = 0.015). Asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 positive mothers have higher odds of prelabor rupture of membranes at term, without an increase in perinatal complications, compared to negative mothers. Pregnant women testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 at admission for delivery should be reassured by their healthcare workers in the absence of symptoms
