Traces: Here/Not Here endeavors to put a positive spin on our mortality. We are here, and at some point we will no longer be here: by virtue of living, we will die - but what do we do with this time we have? This body of research creation is about life; about our time-limited lifetimes, our experience of it, and about the effects of our actions. It is about the affect of our interconnectivity with each other, human and non-human, animate and inanimate. By way of interactive artworks featuring playful and dynamic sculptures which must be activated by the physical effort of the artist, a collaborator or a visitor/participant, a durational performance is experienced leaving indexical marks, prompting mindful consideration of our inter-connectedness, and injecting optimism that we can use this opportunity to act for what matters most to each one of us. Through a reflexive practice-led methodology, augmented by literature reviews of theorists, critical thinkers, artists, and art historians, the research investigates the themes of time, Posthuman interconnectedness, as well as investigating participatory and ludic art, which activates the body and the special knowledge creation centered there

The Monterey County Department of Social Services has been serving the community through the various programs to the community. The Aging and Adult Services unit of the department offers In-Home Supportive Services program which serves the senior population and people living with disabilities. This program unfortunately is not very known in the community and can serve a lot more people than it currently is. The problem being addressed is the lack of awareness that the program has among the community. The project implemented to remedy this lack of awareness is the creation of a county brochure that explains the program, who is eligible, and the application process for this program. Also, a presentation to the Health’s Project Canter explaining the program was part of the project. The purpose is to raise awareness of this program in the community so that more seniors and people with disabilities can take advantage of this program and to help bridge the gap between seniors and social services not being utilized due to the lack of awareness. The brochures were distributed among twenty partnering agencies with hopes to increase the number of calls made to apply or inquire more information about the program

This study focuses on the instruction of middle grade English language learners (ELs) and their bilingual, English as a Second Language (ESL), and content teachers in a large, urban, Midwestern school district. This mixed methods study gathered quantitative and qualitative data using a survey and interviews to examine the preparation, dispositions, and experiences of middle grade EL teachers; their professional development; their instructional decisions related to language and literacy development; and the factors that influence these decisions. Study results aided the formulation of district, school, and teacher level recommendations based on the belief that without equitable, quality instruction, and highly developed and supported EL teachers, these students will not attain the knowledge and skills in content, language, and literacy necessary for success in learning and life

Resource selection and route generation in discrete manufacturing environment

    Get PDF
When put to various sources, the question of which sequence of operations and machines is best for producing a particular component will often receive a wide range of answers. When the factors of optimum cutting conditions, minimum time, minimum cost, and uniform equipment utilisation are added to the equation, the range of answers becomes even more extensive. Many of these answers will be 'correct', however only one can be the best or optimum solution. When a process planner chooses a route and the accompanying machining conditions for a job, he will often rely on his experience to make the choice. Clearly, a manual generation of routes does not take all the important considerations into account. The planner may not be aware of all the factors and routes available to him. A large workshop might have hundreds of possible routes, even if he did know it all', he will never be able to go through all the routes and calculate accurately which is the most suitable for each process - to do this, something faster is required. This thesis describes the design and implementation of an Intelligent Route Generator. The aim is to provide the planner with accurate calculations of all possible production routes m a factory. This will lead up to the selection of an optimum solution according to minimum cost and time. The ultimate goal will be the generation of fast decisions based on expert information. Background knowledge of machining processes and machine tools was initially required, followed by an identification of the role of the knowledge base and the database within the system. An expert system builder. Crystal, and a database software package, DBase III Plus, were chosen for the project. Recommendations for possible expansion of and improvements to the expert system have been suggested for future development

Age and growth of the highly exploited narrownose smooth-hound (Mustelus schmitti) (Pisces: Elasmobranchii)

The narrownose smoothhound (Mustelus schmitti) is the most exploited elasmobranch of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay and is considered endangered (IUCN Red List of Threatened Species). Providing information on age and growth can improve efforts for conservation of this species. Therefore, our objective was to provide accurate estimates of the age structure and growth parameters for narrownose smooth-hound from Anegada Bay, an important shark nursery area in Argentina. In vertebrae of narrownose smooth-hound, we observed a pattern of alternating opaque and translucent bands and a yearly periodicity in the deposition of this pattern. Ages determined from vertebral band counts ranged from 0 to 11 years. Calculated longevity and total natural mortality rates were 20.87 years and 0.19/year for females and 12.24 years and 0.26/year for males, respectively. This species reached a size of approximately 400 mm in total length in the initial year of growth, and the age at first maturity was 7.61 years for females and 6.79 years for males. The slow growth and late age at maturity of the narrownose smoothhound indicate a need for additional conservation measures to rebuild the population and achieve a sustainable fishery in the 3 countries in which it is distributed.Fil: Molina, Juan Manuel.
