Edge reconstructions in fractional quantum Hall systems
Two dimensional electron systems exhibiting the fractional quantum Hall
effects are characterized by a quantized Hall conductance and a dissipationless
bulk. The transport in these systems occurs only at the edges where gapless
excitations are present. We present a {\it microscopic} calculation of the edge
states in the fractional quantum Hall systems at various filling factors using
the extended Hamiltonian theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect. We find
that at the quantum Hall edge undergoes a reconstruction as the
background potential softens, whereas quantum Hall edges at higher filling
factors, such as , are robust against reconstruction. We present
the results for the dependence of the edge states on various system parameters
such as temperature, functional form and range of electron-electron
interactions, and the confining potential. Our results have implications for
the tunneling experiments into the edge of a fractional quantum Hall system.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures; minor typos corrected; added 2 reference
Edge reconstruction in the fractional quantum Hall regime
The interplay of electron-electron interaction and confining potential can
lead to the reconstruction of fractional quantum Hall edges. We have performed
exact diagonalization studies on microscopic models of fractional quantum Hall
liquids, in finite size systems with disk geometry, and found numerical
evidence of edge reconstruction under rather general conditions. In the present
work we have taken into account effects like layer thickness and Landau level
mixing, which are found to be of quantitative importance in edge physics. Due
to edge reconstruction, additional nonchiral edge modes arise for both
incompressible and compressible states. These additional modes couple to
electromagnetic fields and thus can be detected in microwave conductivity
measurements. They are also expected to affect the exponent of electron Green's
function, which has been measured in tunneling experiments. We have studied in
this work the electric dipole spectral function that is directly related to the
microwave conductivity measurement. Our results are consistent with the
enhanced microwave conductivity observed in experiments performed on samples
with an array of antidots at low temperatures, and its suppression at higher
temperatures. We also discuss the effects of the edge reconstruction on the
single electron spectral function at the edge.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figure
Quantum coherent control of highly multipartite continuous-variable entangled states by tailoring parametric interactions
The generation of continuous-variable multipartite entangled states is
important for several protocols of quantum information processing and
communication, such as one-way quantum computation or controlled dense coding.
In this article we theoretically show that multimode optical parametric
oscillators can produce a great variety of such states by an appropriate
control of the parametric interaction, what we accomplish by tailoring either
the spatio-temporal shape of the pump, or the geometry of the nonlinear medium.
Specific examples involving currently available optical parametric oscillators
are given, hence showing that our ideas are within reach of present technology.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
Duality cascades and duality walls
We recast the phenomenon of duality cascades in terms of the Cartan matrix
associated to the quiver gauge theories appearing in the cascade. In this
language, Seiberg dualities for the different gauge factors correspond to Weyl
reflections. We argue that the UV behavior of different duality cascades
depends markedly on whether the Cartan matrix is affine ADE or not. In
particular, we find examples of duality cascades that can't be continued after
a finite energy scale, reaching a "duality wall", in terminology due to M.
Strassler. For these duality cascades, we suggest the existence of a UV

Theoretical predictions for the direct detection of neutralino dark matter in the NMSSM
We analyse the direct detection of neutralino dark matter in the framework of
the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. After performing a detailed
analysis of the parameter space, taking into account all the available
constraints from LEPII, we compute the neutralino-nucleon cross section, and
compare the results with the sensitivity of detectors. We find that sizable
values for the detection cross section, within the reach of dark matter
detectors, are attainable in this framework. For example, neutralino-proton
cross sections compatible with the sensitivity of present experiments can be
obtained due to the exchange of very light Higgses with m_{h_1^0}\lsim 70
GeV. Such Higgses have a significant singlet composition, thus escaping
detection and being in agreement with accelerator data. The lightest neutralino
in these cases exhibits a large singlino-Higgsino composition, and a mass in
the range 50\lsim m_{\tilde\chi_1^0}\lsim 100 GeV.Comment: Final version to appear in JHEP. References added. LaTeX, 53 pages,

Beta cell death by cell-free DNA and outcome after clinical islet transplantation
Background: Optimizing engraftment and early survival after clinical islet transplantation is critical to long-term function, but there are no reliable, quantifiable measures to assess beta cell death. Circulating cell free DNA (cfDNA) derived from beta cells has been identified as a novel biomarker to detect cell loss, and was recently validated in new-onset type 1 diabetes and in islet transplant patients.
Methods: Herein we report beta cell cfDNA measurements after allotransplantation in 37 subjects and the correlation with clinical outcomes.
Results: A distinctive peak of cfDNA was observed 1hr after transplantation in 31/37 (83.8%) of subjects. The presence and magnitude of this signal did not correlate with transplant outcome. The 1hr signal represents dead beta cells carried over into the recipient after islet isolation and culture, combined with acute cell death post infusion. Beta cell cfDNA was also detected 24hrs post-transplant (8/37 subjects, 21.6%). This signal was associated with higher 1-month insulin requirements (p=0.04), lower 1-month stimulated C-peptide levels (p=0.01) and overall worse 3-month engraftment, by insulin independence (ROC:AUC=0.70, p=0.03) and Beta 2 score (ROC:AUC=0.77, p=0.006).
Conclusions: cfDNA-based estimation of beta cell death 24hrs after islet allotransplantation correlates with clinical outcome and could predict early engraftment.B.G.-L. is supported through the Alberta Innovates :Health Solutions (AIHS) Clinician Fellowship and through the CNTRP. Overexpression of wild-type human APP in mice causes cognitive déficits and pathological features unrelated to Abeta levels
Transgenic mice expressing mutant human amyloid precursor protein (APP) develop an age-dependent
amyloid pathology and memory deficits, but no overt neuronal loss. Here, in mice overexpressing wild-type
human APP (hAPPwt) we found an early memory impairment, particularly in the water maze and to a lesser
extent in the object recognition task, but β-amyloid peptide (Aβ42) was barely detectable in the
hippocampus. In these mice, hAPP processing was basically non-amyloidogenic, with high levels of APP
carboxy-terminal fragments, C83 and APP intracellular domain. A tau pathology with an early increase in the
levels of phosphorylated tau in the hippocampus, a likely consequence of enhanced ERK1/2 activation, was
also observed. Furthermore, these mice presented a loss of synapse-associated proteins: PSD95, AMPA and
NMDA receptor subunits and phosphorylated CaMKII. Importantly, signs of neurodegeneration were found in
the hippocampal CA1 subfield and in the entorhinal cortex that were associated to a marked loss of MAP2
immunoreactivity. Conversely, in mice expressing mutant hAPP, high levels of Aβ42 were found in the
hippocampus, but no signs of neurodegeneration were apparent. The results support the notion of Aβ-
independent pathogenic pathways in Alzheimer's disease
Thermodynamics of an Anyon System
We examine the thermal behavior of a relativistic anyon system, dynamically
realized by coupling a charged massive spin-1 field to a Chern-Simons gauge
field. We calculate the free energy (to the next leading order), from which all
thermodynamic quantities can be determined. As examples, the dependence of
particle density on the anyon statistics and the anyon anti-anyon interference
in the ideal gas are exhibited. We also calculate two and three-point
correlation functions, and uncover certain physical features of the system in
