Diversity in Acinetobacter baumannii isolates from paediatric cancer patients in Egypt

Acinetobacter baumannii is an important nosocomial pathogen, commonly causing infections in immunocompromised patients. It is increasingly reported as a multidrug-resistant organism, which is alarming because of its capability to resist all available classes of antibiotics including carbapenems. The aim of this study was to examine the genetic and epidemiological diversity of A. baumannii isolates from paediatric cancer patients in Egypt, by sequencing the intrinsic blaOXA -51-like gene, genotyping by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and multi-locus sequence typing in addition to identifying the carbapenem-resistance mechanism. Results showed a large diversity within the isolates, with eight different blaOXA -51-like genes, seven novel sequence types and only 28% similarity by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. All three acquired class-D carbapenemases (OXA-23, OXA-40 and OXA-58) were also identified among these strains correlating with resistance to carbapenems. In addition, we report the first identification of ISAba2 upstream of blaOXA -51-like contributing to high-level carbapenem resistance. This indicates the presence of several clones of A. baumannii in the hospitals and illustrates the large genetic and epidemiological diversity found in Egyptian strains

Postdialysis recovery time is extended in patients with greater self-reported depression screening questionnaire scores

© 2018 International Society for HemodialysisIntroduction: Most patients take time to recover after a hemodialysis (HD) session. It has been suggested that recovery time is associated with intradialytic hypotension and rapid solute clearances. Other studies have reported a linkage to depression. We investigated the association between recovery time and intradialytic hypotension and depression. Methods: In five UK HD units, we screened for depressive symptoms using the Beck depression inventory-II, Patient Health Questionnaire, and recorded sessional blood pressures and Kt/Vurea. Findings: Seven hundred and one HD patients were studied; 63.6% male, mean age 64.1 ± 16.6 years, 33.5% diabetic. About 24.1% recovered in 1 hour were more likely to be female, have high self-reported Beck depression inventory-II scores, a past medical history of depression, and be living without a partner. Longer recovery times were also associated with very low postdialysis systolic blood pressures (<100 mmHg), and higher body weight. However, the model predicted only 18% of the variation in recovery times. We found no association between recovery times and short-term mortality risk. Discussion: Prolonged postdialysis recovery times are associated with higher self-reported depression scores, and very low postdialysis blood pressure. Future studies investigating changes in dialysis practice and recovery times will need to target strategies to prevent intradialytic hypotension and adjust for patient psychological status.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

Novos espaços da literatura marginal brasileira

No Brasil, a segregação urbana é uma das faces mais importantes da desigualdade social e parte promotora da mesma. Nestas áreas de segregação, além de todos os problemas subjacentes, como a urbanização precária e a falta das condições mínimas para manter uma vida salubre, há também a ausência de equipamentos de mercado cultural. Para suprir essa necessidade, há pouco mais de duas décadas, temos uma grande proliferação das artes e da literatura marginal ou periférica, na qual a produção e manifestação de artistas e grupos periféricos, chega para preencher esses espaços. Nos dias atuais, essa expressão cultural no Brasil é um exemplo de resistência política e produções de novos sentidos políticos. As manifestações culturais suburbanas mostram algumas propostas e mudanças na sua estrutura tanto na criação como na divulgação da arte. Este artigo apresenta o trabalho proferido na conferência 100 anos dos Estudos Românicos em Zagreb: tradição, contactos, perspectivas e tem por objetivo esboçar brevemente este movimento tão amplo e rico da atualidade, colocando, desta forma, em discussão os limites das novas fronteiras literárias no Brasil

Contemporary marginal literature and poetry in Brazil : the periphery in the voice of Sérgio Vaz and Ferréz

In Brazil, the urban segregation is one of the most important aspects of social inequality. This segregation, along with a political-social feeling coupled with the marginal positioning of some social groups, culminated in the emergence of an independent cultural production network whose novelty consists in the representation and dissemination of local identity. Marginal Literature is one of these manifestations, in this type of literature, the authors of the works are marginalized by a society that does not give them ears or voice. They found in writing a way to show their revolt and the search for social and ethnic recognition. The purpose of this article is to present a little of this literary production of the last 20 years in Brazil, its peculiarities, forms and themes.No Brasil, a segregação urbana é uma das faces mais importantes da desigualdade social e parte promotora da mesma. Dentro destas manifestações encontra-se a Literatura Marginal. Nesse tipo de literatura, os próprios autores das obras são marginalizados por uma sociedade que não lhes dá ouvidos ou voz para falar e, na forma de escrever, encontraram um modo de mostrar sua revolta e a busca por reconhecimento social e étnico. New trends in ICT regarding education

In the 21st century and because of the exponential growth of the Internet and Information Communication Technologies (ICT), people lived in a technological age, in all areas and in all contexts, we have daily contact with technology, with access to information, linked to it, we have a constant update of technological services and tools that change the method we study, work, communicate and socialize on an unprecedented scale. These constant changes oblige everyone regardless the age, gender or profession to possess a range of functional and critical thinking skills, such as Information Literacy, Media Literacy and Technology Literacy. This evolution, forces, the promoters of education, to be always aware of changes that society is introducing outside of the classroom. Today students don’t have the same role that used to, independently of age, they are very active and no longer the same introverted child that studied a few years ago in the classrooms. Also the educational environments can be created anywhere and used everywhere. According to this, students are used to seeking different forms and ways of motivation in and out of the classroom, they need that the learning and teaching process move along with the society and ICT changes. In order to ensure the success of today’s students, it’s important to give them the technological skills to make the correct use of ICT, to perform essential tasks for their training such as research and information selection, problems solvers and decision makers, creative and effective users of productivity tools and communicators, collaborators, publishers and producers of contents. The main purpose of this communication is, to show a part of ICT tools that can be used in educational settings to support learners, helping them to develop key skills in their training process, it’s also relevant to show how these tools can help teachers to achieve these objectives on the daily activities.No século XXI e por causa do crescimento exponencial da Internet e das Tecnologias de Comunicação da Informação (TIC), as pessoas vivem numa era tecnológica, em todas as áreas e em todos os contextos. Temos contacto diário com tecnologia, com acesso à informação e associado a este fenómeno existe uma constante atualização de serviços tecnológicos e ferramentas que mudam os métodos de estudo, trabalho, comunicação e socialização numa escala sem precedentes. Essas mudanças constantes obrigam a todos, independentemente da idade, sexo ou profissão, a possuir uma gama de habilidades de pensamento funcional e crítico, como literacia para a informação, literacia para os media e literacia tecnológica. Essa evolução, força os responsáveis da educação, a estarem sempre conscientes das mudanças que a sociedade está introduzindo fora da sala de aula. Hoje, os alunos não têm o mesmo papel que há uns anos atrás. As crianças são muito ativas, não revelando os comportamentos introvertidos que anteriormente evidenciavam. Além disso, os ambientes educacionais podem ser criados em qualquer lugar e usados em todo o lado. Os alunos estão habituados a procurar diferentes formas de motivação dentro e fora da sala de aula, eles precisam que o processo de ensino-aprendizagem acompanhe as mudanças da sociedade e das TIC. A fim de garantir o sucesso dos estudantes de hoje, é importante dar-lhes as habilidades tecnológicas para fazer o uso correto das TIC, para executar tarefas essenciais para sua formação, como a pesquisa e seleção de informações, aprender a solucionar problemas e a tomar decisões a ser utilizadores efetivos das ferramentas de produtividade, comunicação e colaboração, bem como serem editores e produtores de conteúdos. O principal objetivo desta comunicação é mostrar uma parte das ferramentas de TIC que podem ser usadas em ambientes educacionais para apoiar os alunos, ajudando-os a desenvolver habilidades-chave no seu processo formativo. Pretendemos também mostrar como é que essas ferramentas podem ajudar os professores a alcançar os objetivos pedagógicos nas atividades diárias
