Enabling seamless V2I communications towards developing cooperative automotive applications in VANET systems
Cooperative applications for VANET will require seamless communication between Vehicle to Infrastructure and Vehicle to Vehicle. IEEE 802.11p has been developed to facilitate this effort. However, in order to have seamless communication for these applications, it is necessary to look at handover as vehicles move between Road-side Units. Traditional models of handover used in normal mobile environments are unable to cope with the high velocity of the vehicle and the relatively small area of coverage with regard to vehicular environments. The YComm framework has yielded techniques to calculate the Time Before Vertical Handover and the Network Dwell Time for any given network topology. Furthermore, by knowing these two parameters, it is also possible to improve channel allocation and resource management in network infrastructure such as base-stations, relays, etc. In this article we explain our overall approach by describing the VANET Testbed and show that in Vehicular environments it is necessary to consider a new handover model which is based on a probabilistic rather than a fixed coverage approach. Finally, we show a new performance model for proactive handover which is then compared with traditional approaches
Learning with multiple representations: An example of a revision lesson in mechanics
We describe an example of learning with multiple representations in an
A-level revision lesson on mechanics. The context of the problem involved the
motion of a ball thrown vertically upwards in air and studying how the
associated physical quantities changed during its flight. Different groups of
students were assigned to look at the ball's motion using various
representations: motion diagrams, vector diagrams, free-body diagrams, verbal
description, equations and graphs, drawn against time as well as against
displacement. Overall, feedback from students about the lesson was positive. We
further discuss the benefits of using computer simulation to support and extend

Concave Plasmonic Particles: Broad-Band Geometrical Tunability in the Near Infra-Red
Optical resonances spanning the Near and Short Infra-Red spectral regime were
exhibited experimentally by arrays of plasmonic nano-particles with concave
cross-section. The concavity of the particle was shown to be the key ingredient
for enabling the broad band tunability of the resonance frequency, even for
particles with dimensional aspect ratios of order unity. The atypical
flexibility of setting the resonance wavelength is shown to stem from a unique
interplay of local geometry with surface charge distributions
Tree genetic resources at risk in South America: A spatial threat assessment to prioritize populations for conservation
Background
Humans threat the populations of tree species by overexploitation, deforestation, land use change, and climate change. We present a novel threat assessment at intraspecific level to support the conservation of genetic resources of 80 socioeconomically viable tree species in South America. In this assessment, we evaluate the threat status of Ecogeographic Range Segments (ERSs). ERSs are groups of populations of a specific species in a certain ecological zone of a particular grid cell of a speciesâ geographic occupancy.
Methods
We used species location records to determine the species distributions and speciesâspecific ERSs. We distinguished eight threat situations to assess the risk of extirpation of the ERSs of all 80 species. These threat situations were determined by large or little tree cover, low or high human pressure, and low or high climate change impact. Available layers of tree cover and threats were used to determine the levels of fragmentation and direct human pressure. Maxent niche modelling with two Global Circulation Models helped determining climate change impact by the 2050s.
Results
When all 80 species are considered, in total, 59% of the ERSs are threatened by little tree cover or high human pressure. When climate change is also considered, then 71â73% of the ERSs are threatened. When an increased risk of extirpation of populations outside protected areas is considered, then 84â86% of the ERSs are threatened. Seven species warrant special attention because all their ERSs are threatened across their whole distribution in South America: Balfourondendron riedelianum, Cariniana legalis, Dalbergia nigra, Handroanthus pulcherrimus, Pachira quintana, Prosopis flexuosa, and Prosopis pallida.
Conclusions
Our results confirm the urgency to set up a regional action plan for the conservation of tree genetic resources in South America. With this threat assessment, we aim to support governments and organizations who are taking up this task
Deciphering the trophic interaction between Akkermansia muciniphila and the butyrogenic gut commensal Anaerostipes caccae using a metatranscriptomic approach
Host glycans are paramount in regulating the symbiotic relationship between humans and their gut bacteria. The constant flux of host-secreted mucin at the mucosal layer creates a steady niche for bacterial colonization. Mucin degradation by keystone species subsequently shapes the microbial community. This study investigated the transcriptional response during mucin-driven trophic interaction between the specialised mucin-degrader Akkermansia muciniphila and a butyrogenic gut commensal Anaerostipes caccae. A. muciniphila monocultures and co-cultures with non-mucolytic A. caccae from the Lachnospiraceae family were grown anaerobically in minimal media supplemented with mucin. We analysed for growth, metabolites (HPLC analysis), microbial composition (quantitative reverse transcription PCR), and transcriptional response (RNA-seq). Mucin degradation by A. muciniphila supported the growth of A. caccae and concomitant butyrate production predominantly via the acetyl-CoA pathway. Differential expression analysis (DESeq 2) showed the presence of A. caccae induced changes in the A. muciniphila transcriptional response with increased expression of mucin degradation genes and reduced expression of ribosomal genes. Two putative operons that encode for uncharacterised proteins and an efflux system, and several two-component systems were also differentially regulated. This indicated A. muciniphila changed its transcriptional regulation in response to A. caccae. This study provides insight to understand the mucin-driven microbial ecology using metatranscriptomics. Our findings show that the expression of mucolytic enzymes by A. muciniphila increases upon the presence of a community member. This could indicate its role as a keystone species that supports the microbial community in the mucosal environment by increasing the availability of mucin sugars.Peer reviewe
One-dimensional collision carts computer model and its design ideas for productive experiential learning
We develop an Easy Java Simulation (EJS) model for students to experience the
physics of idealized one-dimensional collision carts. The physics model is
described and simulated by both continuous dynamics and discrete transition
during collision. In the field of designing computer simulations, we discuss
briefly three pedagogical considerations such as 1) consistent simulation world
view with pen paper representation, 2) data table, scientific graphs and
symbolic mathematical representations for ease of data collection and multiple
representational visualizations and 3) game for simple concept testing that can
further support learning. We also suggest using physical world setup to be
augmented complimentary with simulation while highlighting three advantages of
real collision carts equipment like tacit 3D experience, random errors in
measurement and conceptual significance of conservation of momentum applied to
just before and after collision. General feedback from the students has been
relatively positive, and we hope teachers will find the simulation useful in

Effects of fructooligosaccharides on cecum polyamine concentration and gut maturation in early-weaned piglets
Polyamines are molecules involved in cell growth and differentiation and are produced by bacterial metabolism. However, their production and effects by the microbiota selected by fructooligosaccharides consumption are controversial. In this study, we investigated the influence of supplementation of fructooligosaccharides on the cecal polyamine production by the microflora selected, and its effect on gut maturation in newborn piglets. Twenty piglets were fed a control formula (n = 10) or a formula supplemented with fructooligosaccharides (8 g/l) (n = 10) for 13 days. Colony-forming unitâs count of cecal content was done in different media. Several intestinal development parameters were measured as well as the polyamine concentration in the cecal mucosa and cecal content. A dose-dependent study on in vitro polyamine production by fructooligosaccharides addition to the isolated cecal content was performed. Bifidogenic activity of fructooligosaccharides increased polyamine concentration in the cecal content, mainly putrescine, with no beneficial effect on gut maturation. Bifidobacterium spp. were able to produce polyamines, but they were not the most significant bacterial producer of polyamines in the cecum of piglets fed fructooligosaccharides. Bifidogenic activity of fructooligosaccharides did not lead to an increase in gut maturation in piglets of 15 days of age although polyamines were increased in the cecal content
Direct observation by resonant tunneling of the B^+ level in a delta-doped silicon barrier
We observe a resonance in the conductance of silicon tunneling devices with a
delta-doped barrier. The position of the resonance indicates that it arises
from tunneling through the B^+ state of the boron atoms of the delta-layer.
Since the emitter Fermi level in our devices is a field-independent reference
energy, we are able to directly observe the diamagnetic shift of the B^+ level.
This is contrary to the situation in magneto-optical spectroscopy, where the
shift is absorbed in the measured ionization energy.Comment: submitted to PR
