    Effectiveness of exercise interventions for adults over 65 with moderate-to-severe dementia in community settings: a systematic review

    PurposeTo conduct a systematic review of the literature to evaluate the effectiveness of exercise interventions for people with moderate-to-severe dementia in community settings.MethodsEight electronic databases (MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, AMED, PsycINFO, PEDro, The Cochrane Library and BNI) were searched from inception to July 2018. Snowball searching identified additional articles not identified initially. Articles were included if they: reported randomised or quasi-randomised controlled trials comparing exercise with usual care or no treatment; and involved people over 65 with moderate-to-severe dementia in community settings. Outcome measures of interest were strength, endurance, mobility, mood and quality of life. Titles and abstracts of all studies were screened by one reviewer. Two reviewers independently screened full text articles for all eligible studies, extracted data and assessed quality and risk of bias.ResultsEight studies with 819 participants were included. Interventions were variable in terms of content, duration and frequency. There was some evidence exercise programmes may improve physical function of people with moderate-to-severe dementia, with significant effects seen for gait speed and endurance, and a trend towards improvement in strength. There was little evidence to suggest exercise programmes improve mood. Most studies were of low quality.ConclusionExercise was associated with improvements in gait speed and endurance for older people with moderate-to-severe dementia living in the community, but the quality of evidence was low. There was no conclusive evidence regarding effect on strength or mood. Findings are limited by the quality of the available evidence

Within Kleberg County, for example, approximately 16,147 ha are planted in cotton annually, yielding approximately 68,200 bales, or 15,467 metric tons, of cotton (U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA] 2009). Cotton producers have discovered new uses for cotton ginned by-products, such as hydro-mulch (Holt et al. 2005) used as a protein supplement for range livestock (DelCurto et al. 2000) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus; Cooper 2006). Because of this, much of the materials are temporarily stored for later use

    Evaluation of bile salt hydrolase inhibitor efficacy for modulating host bile profile and physiology using a chicken model system

    Gut microbial enzymes, bile salt hydrolases (BSHs) are the gateway enzymes for bile acid (BA) modification in the gut. This activity is a promising target for developing innovative non-antibiotic growth promoters to enhance animal production and health. Compelling evidence has shown that inhibition of BSH activity should enhance weight gain by altering the BA pool, host signalling and lipid metabolism. We recently identified a panel of promising BSH inhibitors. Here, we address the potential of them as alternative, effective, non-antibiotic feed additives, for commercial application, to promote animal growth using a chicken model. In this study, the in vivo efficacy of three BSH inhibitors (caffeic acid phenethylester, riboflavin, carnosic acid) were evaluated. 7-day old chicks (10 birds/group) were either untreated or they received one of the specific BSH inhibitors (25 mg/kg body weight) via oral gavage for 17 days. The chicks in treatment groups consistently displayed higher body weight gain than the untreated chicks. Metabolomic analysis demonstrated that BSH inhibitor treatment led to significant changes in both circulating and intestinal BA signatures in support of blunted intestinal BSH activity. Consistent with this finding, liver and intestinal tissue RNA-Seq analysis showed that carnosic acid treatment significantly altered expression of genes involved in lipid and bile acid metabolism. Taken together, this study validates microbial BSH activity inhibition as an alternative target and strategy to antibiotic treatment for animal growth promotion

    Incorporating African American Veterans\u27 Success Stories for Hypertension Management: Developing a Behavioral Support Texting Protocol

    BACKGROUND: Peer narratives engage listeners through personally relevant content and have been shown to promote lifestyle change and effective self-management among patients with hypertension. Incorporating key quotations from these stories into follow-up text messages is a novel way to continue the conversation, providing reinforcement of health behaviors in the patients\u27 daily lives. OBJECTIVE: In our previous work, we developed and tested videos in which African American Veterans shared stories of challenges and success strategies related to hypertension self-management. This study aims to describe our process for developing a text-messaging protocol intended for use after viewing videos that incorporate the voices of these Veterans. METHODS: We used a multistep process, transforming video-recorded story excerpts from 5 Veterans into 160-character texts. We then integrated these into comprehensive 6-month texting protocols. We began with an iterative review of story transcripts to identify vernacular features and key self-management concepts emphasized by each storyteller. We worked with 2 Veteran consultants who guided our narrative text message development in substantive ways, as we sought to craft culturally sensitive content for texts. Informed by Veteran input on timing and integration, supplementary educational and 2-way interactive assessment text messages were also developed. RESULTS: Within the Veterans Affairs texting system Annie, we programmed five 6-month text-messaging protocols that included cycles of 3 text message types: narrative messages, nonnarrative educational messages, and 2-way interactive messages assessing self-efficacy and behavior related to hypertension self-management. Each protocol corresponds to a single Veteran storyteller, allowing Veterans to choose the story that most resonates with their own life experiences. CONCLUSIONS: We crafted a culturally sensitive text-messaging protocol using narrative content referenced in Veteran stories to support effective hypertension self-management. Integrating narrative content into a mobile health texting intervention provides a low-cost way to support longitudinal behavior change. A randomized trial is underway to test its impact on the lifestyle changes and blood pressure of African American Veterans.     Missing sea level rise in southeastern Greenland during and since the Little Ice Age

    The Greenland Ice Sheet has been losing mass at an accelerating rate over the past 2 decades. Understanding ice mass and glacier changes during the preceding several hundred years prior to geodetic measurements is more difficult because evidence of past ice extent in many places was later overridden. Salt marshes provide the only continuous records of relative sea level (RSL) from close to the Greenland Ice Sheet that span the period of time during and since the Little Ice Age (LIA) and can be used to reconstruct ice mass gain and loss over recent centuries. Salt marsh sediments collected at the mouth of Dronning Marie Dal, close to the Greenland Ice Sheet margin in southeastern Greenland, record RSL changes over the past ca. 300 years through changing sediment and diatom stratigraphy. These RSL changes record a combination of processes that are dominated by local and regional changes in Greenland Ice Sheet mass balance during this critical period that spans the maximum of the LIA and 20th-century warming. In the early part of the record (1725–1762 CE) the rate of RSL rise is higher than reconstructed from the closest isolation basin at Timmiarmiut, but between 1762 and 1880 CE the RSL rate is within the error range of the rate of RSL change recorded in the isolation basin. RSL begins to slowly fall around 1880 CE, with a total amount of RSL fall of 0.09±0.1 m in the last 140 years. Modelled RSL, which takes into account contributions from post-LIA Greenland Ice Sheet glacio-isostatic adjustment (GIA), ongoing deglacial GIA, the global non-ice sheet glacial melt fingerprint, contributions from thermosteric effects, the Antarctic mass loss sea level fingerprint and terrestrial water storage, overpredicts the amount of RSL fall since the end of the LIA by at least 0.5 m. The GIA signal caused by post-LIA Greenland Ice Sheet mass loss is by far the largest contributor to this modelled RSL, and error in its calculation has a large impact on RSL predictions at Dronning Marie Dal. We cannot reconcile the modelled RSL and the salt marsh observations, even when moving the termination of the LIA to 1700 CE and reducing the post-LIA Greenland mass loss signal by 30 %, and a “budget residual” of  mm yr−1 since the end of the LIA remains unexplained. This new RSL record backs up other studies that suggest that there are significant regional differences in the timing and magnitude of the response of the Greenland Ice Sheet to the climate shift from the LIA into the 20th century

    Genotypic and phenotypic characterization of food-associated Lactobacillus plantarum isolates for potential probiotic activities.

    Lactic acid bacterium, Lactobacillus plantarum, has been applied, for centuries, for food and drink fermentations. Given the benefits associated with fermented products, Lb. plantarum strains have captured considerable industrial and scientific interest, so that they are included as fundamental components of functional foods. Indeed, some strains are marketed as probiotics. In the present study, food and gut associated Lb. plantarum isolates were genetically characterized by Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) and phenotypically characterized for properties that could influence their probiotic potential. MLST and phylogenetic analysis stratified 22 Lb. plantarum isolates into six lineages. The isolates were further phenotypically characterized by in vitro assay to assess their potential gut community influence via a limited number of assays including acidification activity, strain displacement activity and their intrinsic range of antibiotic resistance. Given growing recognition of the benefits of fermented foods, and the prevalence of Lb. plantarum in these applications, this study highlights analysis of a subset of preliminary important strain specific features. These features are of interest to all stakeholders, to inform isolate comparison and selection for current functional food associations and that can serve as a basis for future strain and food-microbe fermentation product development

    Community Science’s Contributions to Fostering Relational Values to Overcome Coastal Ecosystems Challenges

    This paper applies the emerging concept of ‘relational values’ – values people hold toward their relationships with nature and with each other – and brings attention to the role of community science in enhancing relational ecosystem values. We feature Gouldsboro Shore, Gulf of Maine Research Institute’s (GMRI) coastal flood monitoring, and river herring monitoring and restoration efforts as focal examples. Gouldsboro Shore activates community volunteers and high school students to support the management and resilience of their clam fishery in Gouldsboro, ME. GMRI’s flood monitoring provides a platform for coastal residents to report, monitor, and map coastal flooding in participating municipalities. In multiple towns, biologists and community members have worked together to restore aquatic habitat and connectivity to support river herring populations while also deepening their connection to their local ecosystems. In each case, community science contributed to enhancing both people-nature and people-people relationships in the community to overcome coastal ecosystem challenges. Coastal decision-makers need to move beyond the antiquated Millennium Ecosystem Assessment framework to recognize a wider set of values that people hold towards coastal and marine natural environments. Community science programs have the potential to foster relational values and activate sustainability-aligned values into action to overcome ecosystem and other societal challenges
