Love and sacrifice: the silent and vital presence of the Soul

    Get PDF
Objective: Emma Rauschenbach, the wife of Carl Jung for many years, was a rich heiress, described as an intelligent woman who took the role of assistant in her husband's work. Methods: The authors analyzed Imelda Gaudissart’s book “Love and Sacrifice” and the Italian version titled “Amore e sacrificio. La vita di Emma Jung”, edited by Armando Dadò 2018. Results: The portrait that emerges in the book, is that of an intelligent, beautiful and faithful woman, a good mother. At the age of thirty-two Emma already had five children. By looking at the couple dynamics and the spouse’s destiny, it is possible to read in the book elements of Jungian hermeneutics of the conscious mind and of the archetype. Conclusions: The vision of this book describes how the destiny that each person makes is a unique and unrepeatable story, an intertwining of animus and soul

Psychological violence and manipulative behavior in couple: A focus on personality traits

    Get PDF
Psychological violence is characterized by systematic denigration and humiliation of the partner (victim). It is an insidious and manipulative behavior put in place to ensure that the victim begins to doubt themselves, and their own judgments, to the point of feeling confused and wrong. This behavior pattern is called Gaslighting and the personality traits are characterized by lack of empathy, psychopathy, narcissism and Machiavellianism. These three conditions are part of the so-called dark triad and distinguished by the lack of empathy. The aim of this study is to explore psychological aspects and consequences of Gaslighting phenomena. This systematic review was conducted according to Systematic Reviews guidelines (PubMed and Google Scholar databases), using 2 key terms related to this topic “Psychological Violence” AND “Gaslighting”. Data for this systematic review were collected in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The reviewed studies focused on violence on affective manipulation, abuse trauma that compromises a subject\u27s identity, psyche, self-esteem and sense of self, in women\u27s mental health conditions. Most of the research analyzed is focused on the gender violence and manipulative behavior in couples

Developing a long short-term memory-based model for forecasting the daily energy consumption of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in buildings

Forecasting the energy consumption of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems is important for the energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings. In fact, conventional models present limitations in these systems due to their complexity and unpredictability. To overcome this, the long short-term memory-based model is employed in this work. Our objective is to develop and evaluate a model to forecast the daily energy consumption of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems in buildings. For this purpose, we apply a comprehensive methodology that allows us to obtain a robust, generalizable, and reliable model by tuning different parameters. The results show that the proposed model achieves a significant improvement in the coefficient of variation of root mean square error of 9.5% compared to that proposed by international agencies. We conclude that these results provide an encouraging outlook for its implementation as an intelligent service for decision making, capable of overcoming the problems of other noise-sensitive models affected by data variations and disturbances without the need for expert knowledge in the domain.

Affective temperaments and personality traits in couple well-being

    Get PDF
Background. The objective of this study is to establish the link between affective temperament traits and maladaptive personality traits, to verify whether the potential presence of elements related to emotional, affective and dysfunctional relational functioning can affect the couple satisfaction, modifying the well-being or discomfort condition. Materials and Methods. A data collection questionnaire was developed to investigate the factors associated with dysfunctional emotional, affective, and relational modes of functioning. The sample consisted of 473 subjects. Data were collected including the TEMPS-A questionnaire, The Dirty Dozen Italian Assessment and the Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS). Results. The findings of this study showed that the subscales of affective temperament were predictors of dark triad traits. The expressive, irritable and hyperthymic temperamental traits were found to be predictors of trait psychopathy; hyperthymic temperament is also a predictor of narcissistic traits and cyclothymic temperament is a predictor of lower couple satisfaction; men show higher scores than women in Dark triad. Conclusions. This study confirmed that temperamental traits can predict maladaptive personality traits belonging to the dark triad and confirms the importance of evaluating maladaptive personality traits to prevent forms of psychological violence in couple

Fluorescent redox-dependent labeling of lipid droplets in cultured cells by reduced phenazine methosulfate

Natural and synthetic phenazines are widely used in biomedical sciences. In dehydrogenase histochemistry, phenazine methosulfate (PMS) is applied as a redox reagent for coupling reduced coenzymes to the reduction of tetrazolium salts into colored formazans. PMS is also currently used for cytotoxicity and viability assays of cell cultures using sulfonated tetrazoliums. Under UV (340 nm) excitation, aqueous solutions of the cationic PMS show green fluorescence (λem: 526 nm), whereas the reduced hydrophobic derivative (methyl-phenazine, MPH) shows blue fluorescence (λem: 465 nm). Under UV (365 nm) excitation, cultured cells (LM2, IGROV-1, BGC-1, and 3T3-L1 adipocytes) treated with PMS (5 μg/mL, 30 min) showed cytoplasmic granules with bright blue fluorescence, which correspond to lipid droplets labeled by the lipophilic methyl-phenazine. After formaldehyde fixation blue-fluorescing droplets could be stained with oil red O. Interestingly, PMS-treated 3T3-L1 adipocytes observed under UV excitation 24 h after labeling showed large lipid droplets with a weak green emission within a diffuse pale blue-fluorescing cytoplasm, whereas a strong green emission was observed in small lipid droplets. This fluorescence change from blue to green indicates that reoxidation of methyl-phenazine to PMS can occur. Regarding cell uptake and labeling mechanisms, QSAR models predict that the hydrophilic PMS is not significantly membrane-permeant, so most PMS reduction is expected to be extracellular and associated with a plasma membrane NAD(P)H reductase. Once formed, the lipophilic and blue-fluorescing methyl-phenazine enters live cells and mainly accumulates in lipid droplets. Overall, the results reported here indicate that PMS is an excellent fluorescent probe to investigate labeling and redox dynamics of lipid droplets in cultured cells.Fil: Stockert, Juan C.. Tomato is a high value crop and the primary model for fleshy fruit development and ripening. Breeding priorities include increased fruit quality, shelf life and tolerance to stresses. To contribute towards this goal, we re-sequenced the genomes of Corbarino (COR) and Lucariello (LUC) landraces, which both possess the traits of plant adaptation to water deficit, prolonged fruit shelf-life and good fruit quality. Through the newly developed pipeline Reconstructor, we generated the genome sequences of COR and LUC using datasets of 65.8M and 56.4M of 30–150bp paired-end reads, respectively. New contigs including reads that could not be mapped to the tomato reference genome were assembled, and a total of 43, 054 and 44, 579 gene loci were annotated in COR and LUC. Both genomes showed novel regions with similarity to Solanum pimpinellifolium and Solanum pennellii. In addition to small deletions and insertions, 2, 000 and 1, 700 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) could exert potentially disruptive effects on 1, 371 and 1, 201 genes in COR and LUC, respectively. A detailed survey of the SNPs occurring in fruit quality, shelf life and stress tolerance related-genes identified several candidates of potential relevance. Variations in ethylene response components may concur in determining peculiar phenotypes of COR and LUC

Sex differences in the adult human brain:Evidence from 5216 UK Biobank participants

Sex differences in the human brain are of interest for many reasons: for example, there are sex differences in the observed prevalence of psychiatric disorders and in some psychological traits that brain differences might help to explain. We report the largest single-sample study of structural and functional sex differences in the human brain (2750 female, 2466 male participants; mean age 61.7 years, range 44–77 years). Males had higher raw volumes, raw surface areas, and white matter fractional anisotropy; females had higher raw cortical thickness and higher white matter tract complexity. There was considerable distributional overlap between the sexes. Subregional differences were not fully attributable to differences in total volume, total surface area, mean cortical thickness, or height. There was generally greater male variance across the raw structural measures. Functional connectome organization showed stronger connectivity for males in unimodal sensorimotor cortices, and stronger connectivity for females in the default mode network. This large-scale study provides a foundation for attempts to understand the causes and consequences of sex differences in adult brain structure and function
