Federal Relief Programs in the 19th Century: A Reassessment
The American model of the welfare state, incomplete as it may be, was not plucked out of thin air by the architects of the New Deal in the 1930s. Instead it is the product and logical evolution of a long historical process. 19th century federal relief programs for various population groups, including veterans, native Americans, merchant sailors, emancipated slaves, and residents of the District of Columbia, are examined in order to help better understand contemporary welfare developments
Time-dependent, diffusion-controlled reactions: The influence of boundaries
A configurational averaging procedure is presented for the analysis of diffusion-controlled reactions in a medium containing a hard-sphere distribution of spherical sinks. The hierarchy of equations produced from the averaging procedure is truncated assuming low concentration of sinks. The method is shown to reproduce previous results for the decay of an initially uniform distribution of reactant in an unbounded medium and is subsequently applied to determine the reactant flux on the boundary of a semiinfinite domain. In the latter problem, the boundary has a significant effect which cannot be accounted for by the usual rate coefficient
Direct numerical simulations of emulsion flows
In this paper, three-dimensional boundary integral computer simulations of emulsions in shear flows are described. Results for ordered BCC emulsions with dispersed-phase volume fractions below the critical concentration are presented. Complex rheological features including: shear-thinning viscosities, normal stress differences, and a nonlinear frequency response are also explored. For deformable drops, pair wise collision produces net cross-flow displacements that govern self-diffusion of drops. We compute trajectories of two interacting drops in shearing and present interesting numerical simulations of three dimensional gravity-induced motion of two drops. The results also demonstrate the feasibility of simulating high-volume-fraction emulsions and foam
The behaviour of political parties and MPs in the parliaments of the Weimar Republic
Copyright @ 2012 The Authors. This is the author's accepted manuscript. The final published article is available from the link below.Analysing the roll-call votes of the MPs of the Weimar Republic we find: (1) that party competition in the Weimar parliaments can be structured along two dimensions: an economic leftâright and a pro-/anti-democratic. Remarkably, this is stable throughout the entire lifespan of the Republic and not just in the later years and despite the varying content of votes across the lifespan of the Republic, and (2) that nearly all parties were troubled by intra-party divisions, though, in particular, the national socialists and communists became homogeneous in the final years of the Republic.Zukunftskolleg, University of Konstan
The unconscious in social explanation
The proper range and content of the unconscious in the human sciences should be established by reference to its conceptual relationship to the folk psychology that informs the standard form of explanation therein. A study of this relationship shows that human scientists should appeal to the unconscious only when the language of the conscious fails them, that is typically when they find a conflict between people's self-understanding and their actions. This study also shows that human scientists should adopt a broader concept of the unconscious than the one developed by Freud, that is, one free from his ahistorical concept of the instincts and his ahistorical emphasis on the sexual experiences of childhood. The unconscious, understood in this way, has an ambiguous relationship to more recent linguistic and narrativist strands of psycho-analysis
Vedolizumab for Inflammatory Bowel Disease:Two-Year Results of the Initiative on Crohn and Colitis (ICC) Registry, A Nationwide Prospective Observational Cohort Study: ICC Registry - Vedolizumab
Contains fulltext :
220028.pdf (Publisherâs version ) (Open Access)Prospective data of vedolizumab treatment for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) beyond 1 year of treatment is scarce but needed for clinical decision making. We prospectively enrolled 310 patients with IBD (191 with Crohn's disease (CD) and 119 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC)) with a follow-up period of 104 weeks (interquartile range: 103-104) in a nationwide registry. The corticosteroid-free clinical remission rate (Harvey Bradshaw Index â€Â 4, Short Clinical Colitis Activity index â€Â 2) at weeks 52 and 104 were 28% and 19% for CD and 27% and 28% for UC, respectively. Fifty-nine percent maintained corticosteroid-free clinical remission between weeks 52 and 104. Vedolizumab with concomitant immunosuppression showed comparable effectiveness outcomes compared with vedolizumab monotherapy (week 104: 21% vs. 23%; P = 0.77), whereas 8 of 13 severe infections occurred in patients treated with concomitant immunosuppression. To conclude, the clinical effect was 19% for CD and 28% for UC after 2 years of follow-up regardless of concomitant immunosuppression
