Considerations on the success rate in aeronautical engineering studies in Spain

    Get PDF
The relationship between different learning evaluation methods and the academic success in an aeronautical engineering degree in Spain is analysed. The study is based on data about the evolution of academic achievement obtained along the last ten year, along which the evaluation and learning’s methods have suffered huge changes

Effect of the anatomical structure, wood properties and machining conditions on surface roughness of wood

    Get PDF
The main aim is to test the influence of anatomical structure (grain direction and elements size), wood hardness and machining conditions on wood surface roughness. 180 samples defect-free were obtained from beech, oak and pine and processed with different machining methods (planning, sanding with 60 grit or sanding with 180 grit). Roughness, hardness, and anatomical structure were analysed using international methodologies. An analysis of variance of the data from all the samples with the four factors in the experimental design were performed. Results showed that machining processes and species are the factors that significantly affect surface roughness, as opposed to grain direction (plane of section and stylus-grain angle), which was only shown to be significant in some subgroups. Roughness parameters of samples sanded with 180 grit were lower in contrast to samples planned or sanded with 60 grit. Hardness was found to be the property of the wood that most clearly affects its final roughness, and makes it difficult to achieve better roughness results as the hardness increases

Beyond outputs: pathways to symmetrical evaluations of university sustainable development partnerships

    Get PDF
As the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005–2014) draws to a close, it is timely to review ways in which the sustainable development initiatives of higher education institutions have been, and can be, evaluated. In their efforts to document and assess collaborative sustainable development program outcomes and impacts, universities in the North and South are challenged by similar conundrums that confront development agencies. This article explores pathways to symmetrical evaluations of transnationally partnered research, curricula, and public-outreach initiatives specifically devoted to sustainable development. Drawing on extensive literature and informed by international development experience, the authors present a novel framework for evaluating transnational higher education partnerships devoted to sustainable development that addresses design, management, capacity building, and institutional outreach. The framework is applied by assessing several full-term African higher education evaluation case studies with a view toward identifying key limitations and suggesting useful future symmetrical evaluation pathways. University participants in transnational sustainable development initiatives, and their supporting donors, would be well-served by utilizing an inclusive evaluation framework that is infused with principles of symmetry

Mapping of Vibrotactile Stimuli into a Perceptual Space

To transmit tactile information with a discrete set of symbols, the alphabet of the code has to pack as many stimuli as can be reliably discriminated. Here we introduce a notion of perceptual space to construct such a code, defined in terms of the probabilities that pairs of neighboring stimuli are perceived as equal. We perform discrimination experiments exhibiting the well-known effects described by Weber's law, and identify the physical properties of vibrotactile stimuli that most efficiently modulate perceptual discriminability. We conclude that widely used libraries of vibration profiles contain stimuli that are far from homogeneously discriminable. We present our preliminary results as a starting point for the construction of optimal codes.ISSN:0302-9743ISSN:1611-334

A phase II randomised trial of abiraterone acetate plus prednisone in combination with docetaxel or docetaxel plus prednisone after disease progression to abiraterone acetate plus prednisone in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer: The ABIDO-SOGUG trial.

We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of maintaining or withdrawing abiraterone acetate plus prednisone (AAP) in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer who had experienced cancer progression to this treatment and were beginning a docetaxel-based therapy. Phase II, randomised, open-label study conducted in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer who were asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic. After open-label treatment with AAP, patients who had experienced cancer progression to AAP were randomised to 75 mg/m2 of docetaxel plus AAP or to receive 75 mg/m2 of docetaxel plus 10 mg of prednisone orally daily. The primary outcome was the radiographic progression-free survival rate at 12 months as evaluated by the investigators in all randomised patients. A total of 148 patients were included in open-label treatment with AAP, and of them, 94 patients were randomised to receive either docetaxel plus AAP (intervention group; n = 47) or docetaxel plus prednisone (control group; n = 47). The 12-month radiographic progression-free survival rates did not differ between the intervention group (34.9%; 95% CI 20.7-49.2) and the control group (33.9%; 95% CI 19.5-48.3). There were no significant differences in the time to radiographic progression and the overall survival between the intervention and control groups. Grade 3-5 neutropenia with the combination of docetaxel plus prednisone and AA was more frequent than with docetaxel plus prednisone (59.6% versus 27.7%). Our results indicate that the therapeutic strategy of maintaining AAP added to docetaxel in chemotherapy-naïve patients who have experienced cancer progression to AAP treatment should not be further evaluated and should be avoided in clinical practice.
