    Heterogeneity and Vulnerability in the Urban Informal Economy

    The focus of this paper is on the low-value urban informal economy in sub-Saharan Africa. The paper presents a case study from Uganda, with the focus on secondary cities where much of the urban population growth is expected in the next decade. There is also good evidence that informality will persist within both dynamic and in slow urban economies in sub-Saharan Africa. Analysis of the results from fieldwork is presented in support of the basic argument that, as the informal economy is likely to persist there is need for a more conducive policy approach to ensure its positive contribution to the urban economic development; seen as a mainstay of Africa’s future economic development. Currently, the informal economy is considered ephemeral, with little institutional engagement, with the focus on restrictive measures. The paper explores the range of theoretical perspectives on the urban informal economy leading to its re-conceptualizing as part of a continuum of activities in which both formal and informal elements are interlinked. Given the need to improve productivity of activities of different constituent groups along the continuum, the aim of this paper is to develop a conceptual framework that would enable the systematic analyses and identification of the internal diversities within the informal economy. It could be used in future policy research to identify diagnostic groups for entry points. The findings from the fieldwork carried out in the cities of Mbale and Mbarara, show that there are several viable options for sustainable livelihoods, particularly in a dynamic urban center. However, while women dominate in numbers, men remain the main actors. This calls for an inclusive, gender-mainstreamed, pro-poor development policy to complement an enterprise-based approach

    European Retrofit Network: Retrofitting Evaluation Methodology Report

    The research programme, funded by the EU Progress Fund, looks at the potential impacts of construction training in the area of „retrofitting‟ social housing to make it more sustainable, in particular to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This report investigates methodologies for measuring and demonstrating carbon emissions reductions resulting from retrofitting measures in the partner countries (UK, Spain, Poland and Montenegro). The output of this part of the study is a methodology appropriate to measuring the likely carbon reduction impacts through common retrofit measures in the social housing sector, taking into account the likely cost effectiveness of measures, the impact on occupants, the project management challenges and thus the measures that are most likely to be employed in policy and practice. An appropriate methodology is one that can be applied across the range of different conditions found in the partner countries (representative to some degree of the range of conditions found across Europe as whole). Low carbon retrofit has been defined as „incremental improvements to the building fabric and systems with primary intention of improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

    A study of the kinematics and binary-induced shaping of the planetary nebula HaTr 4

    We present the first detailed spatio-kinematical analysis and modelling of the planetary nebula HaTr 4, one of few known to contain a post-common-envelope central star system. Common envelope evolution is believed to play an important role in the shaping of planetary nebulae, but the exact nature of this role is yet to be understood. High spatial- and spectral- resolution spectroscopy of the [OIII]5007 nebular line obtained with VLT-UVES are presented alongside deep narrowband Ha+[NII]6584 imagery obtained using EMMI-NTT, and together the two are used to derive the three-dimensional morphology of HaTr 4. The nebula is found to display an extended ovoid morphology with an enhanced equatorial region consistent with a toroidal waist - a feature believed to be typical amongst planetary nebulae with post-common-envelope central stars. The nebular symmetry axis is found to lie perpendicular to the orbital plane of the central binary, concordant with the idea that the formation and evolution of HaTr 4 has been strongly influenced by its central binary.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    The informal housing development process in Nigeria: the case of Kaduna

    Housing developments in informal areas usually occur in the emerging parts of a Nigerian city, on the periphery. Land in customary tenure/ownership is being sold on the ‘free’ market and turned into ‘informal’ layouts without the official recognition of or approval by government. This report is based on research carried out in the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna over a number of years. Kaduna, together with Kano, the two wealthiest and largest cities in the North West Zone of Nigeria, despite the current economic and political problems , are still expanding rapidly though natural growth combined with in-migration. The evidence is that informal housing development on the urban periphery in both cities is increasing at a stupendous rate and this is where most new households in these cities are being housed. Informal housing currently meets around 90% of Nigeria's housing demand. The report argues in favour of new forms of, and attitudes to urban governance that work with the and manage the informal housing supply system rather than against it

    BackgroundThe association between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and coronary heart disease (CHD) events is not well described in individuals with very high levels of HDL-C (>80 mg/dL).Methods and resultsUsing pooled data from 6 community-based cohorts we examined CHD and total mortality risks across a broad range of HDL-C, including values in excess of 80 mg/dL. We used Cox proportional hazards models with penalized splines to assess multivariable, adjusted, sex-stratified associations of HDL-C with the hazard for CHD events and total mortality, using HDL-C 45 mg/dL and 55 mg/dL as the referent in men and women, respectively. Analyses included 11 515 men and 12 925 women yielding 307 245 person-years of follow-up. In men, the association between HDL-C and CHD events was inverse and linear across most HDL-C values; however at HDL-C values >90 mg/dL there was a plateau effect in the pattern of association. In women, the association between HDL-C and CHD events was inverse and linear across lower values of HDL-C, however at HDL-C values >75 mg/dL there were no further reductions in the hazard ratio point estimates for CHD. In unadjusted models there were increased total mortality risks in men with very high HDL-C, however mortality risks observed in participants with very high HDL-C were attenuated after adjustment for traditional risk factors.ConclusionsWe did not observe further reductions in CHD risk with HDL-C values higher than 90 mg/dL in men and 75 mg/dL in women

Currently, the most versatile synthetic route to this motif involves cross-coupling of one ring with a halide substituent to another ring with a boron or metal-based substituent. Recent research has focused on eliminating the need for one or both of these activating substituents, but for the most part, the emerging methods have required high temperatures and high concentrations of one coupling partner. Ball et al. (p. 1644 ) now present a gold catalyst that can couple silyl-activated arenes to unactivated arenes in comparable concentrations at room temperature. </jats:p

    Self-control tames the coupling of reactive radicals

    Highly reactive or unstable chemical reagents are challenging to prepare, store, and safely handle, so chemists frequently generate them in situ from convenient precursors. In an ideal case, the rate of release of the reagent would be matched to the rate of its “capture” in the desired chemical reaction, thereby preventing the reagent from accumulating and minimizing any opportunity for decomposition. However, this synchronization is rarely achieved or even attempted: The rate of release is usually dictated by the conditions of the reaction (1), rather than being regulated by capture of the reagent. In this issue, Tellis et al. (2) on page 433 and Zuo et al. (3) on page 437 independently report the use of iridium photocatalysis (4, 5) to supply highly reactive radical coupling partners (R⋅) to a nickel-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond-forming process (see the figure). Intriguingly, the two points of contact between the iridium and nickel cycles enforce autoregulated release of the radical, ensuring its efficient capture by nickel rather than its decomposition via other pathways

    A Buffer Stocks Model for Stabilizing Price of Staple Food with Considering the Expectation of Non Speculative Wholesaler

    This paper is a study of price stabilization in the staple food distribution system. All stakeholders experience market risks due to some possibility causes of price volatility. Many models of price stabilization had been developed by employing several approaches such as floor-ceiling prices, buffer funds, export or import taxes, and subsidies. In the previous researches, the models were expanded to increase the purchasing price for producer and decrease the selling price for consumer. Therefore, the policy can influence the losses for non-speculative wholesaler that is reflected by the descending of selling quantity and ascending of the stocks. The objective of this model is not only to keep the expectation of both producer and consumer, but also to protect non-speculative wholesaler from the undesirable result of the stabilization policy. A nonlinear programming model was addressed to determine the instruments of intervention program. Moreover, the result shows that the wholesaler behavior affects the intervention costs.     Beyond ‘know-what’ and ‘know-how’ to ‘know-who’: enhancing human capital with social capital in an Australian start-up accelerator

    This study investigates the enhancement of human capital with social capital in a start-up accelerator and how this integration affects the entrepreneurial learning experience. In particular, it examines the relative importance of the three components ‘know-what’, ‘know-how’ and ‘know-who’. The study involved thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with participants in an Australian start-up accelerator that is delivered using ideas such as Design Thinking, the Business Model Canvas and Lean Start-up methodology. We find that although the programme emphasised ‘know-what’ and ‘know-how’, ‘know-who’ was most significant for participant learning. The results indicate that mentors and experts were especially helpful in shaping learning and in developing entrepreneurial networks. Moreover, our results show that the processes of ‘know-what’, ‘know-how’ and ‘know-who’ are interrelated–by knowing ‘who’, participants learnt ‘what’ and ‘how to’ through social learning. The research contributes to entrepreneurial learning theory and application particularly in the Asia Pacific context, by providing evidence that ‘know-who’ closes the learning loop for ‘know-what’ and ‘know-how’ as ‘know-who’ can actually provide entrepreneurs with the means to enhance their entrepreneurial self-efficacy
