    Podcasting from PowerPoint Made Easy for Faculty

    Student demand, institutional support, and evidence of quality learning through web-based instruction should encourage faculty to experiment with alternative methods of delivering instruction. The authors developed a procedure to produce and deliver classroom lecture material by narrating PowerPoint presentations and converting to podcasts. This procedure requires little to no technical support, even for the technologically impaired, and costs less than $100 in equipment and software combined. It is an example of the many alternative distance education options available to educators today

    Stand-off runaway electron beam termination by tungsten particulates for tokamak disruption mitigation

    Stand-off runaway electron termination by injected tungsten particulates offers a plausible option in the toolbox of disruption mitigation. Tungsten is an attractive material choice for this application due to large electron stopping power and high melting point. To assess the feasibility of this scheme, we simulate runaway collisions with tungsten particulates using the MCNP program for incident runaway energies ranging from 1 to 10 MeV. We assess runaway termination from energetics and collisional kinematics perspectives. Energetically, the simulations show that 99% of runaway beam energy is removed by tungsten particulates on a timescale of 4-9 μ\mus. Kinematically, the simulations show that 99% of runaways are terminated by absorption or backscattering on a timescale of 3-4 μ\mus. By either metric, the runaway beam is effectively terminated before the onset of particulate melting. Furthermore, the simulations show that secondary radiation emission by tungsten particulates does not significantly impact the runaway termination efficacy of this scheme. Secondary radiation is emitted at lower particle energies than the incident runaways and with a broad angular distribution such that the majority of secondary electrons emitted will not experience efficient runaway re-acceleration. Overall, the stand-off runaway termination scheme is a promising concept for last-ditch runaway mitigation in ITER, SPARC, and other future burning-plasma tokamaks.Comment: Submitted to: Nuclear Fusion - 16 pages (4 supplementary), 11 figures (5 supplementary), 4 table

    Effects of Cu/Zn Superoxide Dismutase (sod1) Genotype and Genetic Background on Growth, Reproduction and Defense in Biomphalaria glabrata

    Resistance of the snail Biomphalaria glabrata to the trematode Schistosoma mansoni is correlated with allelic variation at copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (sod1). We tested whether there is a fitness cost associated with carrying the most resistant allele in three outbred laboratory populations of snails. These three populations were derived from the same base population, but differed in average resistance. Under controlled laboratory conditions we found no cost of carrying the most resistant allele in terms of fecundity, and a possible advantage in terms of growth and mortality. These results suggest that it might be possible to drive resistant alleles of sod1 into natural populations of the snail vector for the purpose of controlling transmission of S. mansoni. However, we did observe a strong effect of genetic background on the association between sod1 genotype and resistance. sod1 genotype explained substantial variance in resistance among individuals in the most resistant genetic background, but had little effect in the least resistant genetic background. Thus, epistatic interactions with other loci may be as important a consideration as costs of resistance in the use of sod1 for vector manipulation

    Can democracy be resilient in an increasingly ‘high-speed society’? Social acceleration, some critics argue, poses a serious threat to the idea and practice of democracy. Others invoke but do not develop the idea of ‘slow democracy’ as one important response to this threat. Despite its importance, the critique and response lack analytical depth. In this context, and in an effort to rebuild the debate on a stronger and more fruitful base, the article underscores the potential of political agency to shape democracy’s temporality and reframes ‘slow democracy’ as a challenge of democratic design

    Host-parasite interactions can drive rapid, reciprocal genetic changes (coevolution), provided both hosts and parasites have high heritabilities for resistance/infectivity. Similarly, the host's mating system should also affect the rate of coevolutionary change in host-parasite interactions. Using experimental coevolution, we determined the effect of obligate outcrossing verses partial self-fertilization (mixed mating) on the rate of evolutionary change in a nematode host (Caenorhabditis elegans) and its bacterial parasite (Serratia marcescens). Bacterial populations were derived from a common ancestor. We measured the effects of host mating system on host adaptation to the parasite. We then determined the extent of parasite adaptation to their local host populations. Obligately outcrossing hosts exhibited more rapid adaptation to parasites than did mixed mating hosts. In addition, most of the parasites became adapted to infecting their "local" hosts; but parasites from obligately outcrossing hosts showed a greater level of local adaptation. These results suggest that host populations evolved along separate trajectories, and that outcrossing host populations diverged further than partially selfing populations. Finally, parasites "tracking" outcrossing host populations diverged further than parasites tracking the partially selfing host populations. These results show that the evolutionary trajectories of both hosts and parasites can be shaped by the host's mating system

    Effect of ovulation synchronization program and season on pregnancy to timed artificial insemination in suckled beef cows

    peer-reviewedThis study was conducted to (i) evaluate the requirement for the administration of GnRH coincident with insertion of a progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (PRID) and (ii) the effect of supplementing with 400 IU eCG at PRID removal on pregnancy per AI (P/AI) in spring and autumn calving suckled beef cows, subjected to a 7-d CO-Synch + PRID timed artificial insemination (TAI) program. Suckled beef cows (n = 1408) on 62 commercial farms were enrolled and randomly assigned to either of three treatments: 1) cows received a PRID and 100 μg GnRH on Day −10, followed by 25 mg PGF2α at PRID removal (Day −3) and 100 μg GnRH 72 h later (Day 0) at TAI (Treatment 1; n: spring = 236, autumn = 248); 2) as Treatment 1, but without GnRH at PRID insertion on Day −10 (Treatment 2; n: spring = 232, autumn = 227); 3) as Treatment 1, but cows also received 400 IU eCG at PRID removal on Day −3 (Treatment 3; n: spring = 233, autumn = 232). At Day −10, ovaries were examined by ultrasonography to evaluate the presence or absence of a corpus luteum (CL) and follicle(s) ≥ 10 mm in diameter. Body condition score (BCS) was assessed on a scale of 1–5. Pregnancy diagnosis was carried out 30–35 d after TAI by transrectal ultrasonography. Data were analyzed using the GENMOD and LOGISTIC procedures of SAS. There was a treatment by season interaction for P/AI (P 0.05) by treatment (50.1 v 53.7 v 48.7% for Treatments 1, 2 and 3, respectively). Overall, eCG had a positive effect on P/AI for cows lacking a CL at treatment initiation (P < 0.05). In addition, in cows with low BCS (≤2.25), eCG supplementation tended (P = 0.09) to improve P/AI. Seasonal differences in response to synchronization treatment may be reflective of different management regimens (grazing v confinement) and breed type and remain to be elucidated
