    Phytobacter diazotrophicus from intestine of Caenorhabditis elegans confers colonization-resistance against Bacillus nematocida using flagellin (FliC) as an inhibition factor

    Symbiotic microorganisms in the intestinal tract can influence the general fitness of their hosts and contribute to protecting them against invading pathogens. In this study, we obtained isolate Phytobacter diazotrophicus SCO41 from the gut of free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans that displayed strong colonization-resistance against invading biocontrol bacterium Bacillus nematocida B16. The colonization-resistance phenotype was found to be mediated by a 37-kDa extracellular protein that was identified as flagellin (FliC). With the help of genome information, the fliC gene was cloned and heterologously expressed in E. coli. It could be shown that the B. nematocida B16 grows in chains rather than in planktonic form in the presence of FliC. Scanning Electronic Microscopy results showed that protein FliC-treated B16 bacterial cells are thinner and longer than normal cells. Localization experiments confirmed that the protein FliC is localized in both the cytoplasm and the cell membrane of B16 strain, in the latter especially at the position of cell division. ZDOCK analysis showed that FliC could bind with serine/threonine protein kinase, membrane protein insertase YidC and redox membrane protein CydB. It was inferred that FliC interferes with cell division of B. nematocidal B16, therefore inhibiting its colonization of C. elegans intestines in vivo. The isolation of P. diazotrophicus as part of the gut microbiome of C. elegans not only provides interesting insights about the lifestyle of this nitrogen-fixing bacterium, but also reveals how the composition of the natural gut microbiota of nematodes can affect biological control efforts by protecting the host from its natural enemies

    Ethyne Reducing Metal-Organic Frameworks to Control Fabrications of Core/shell Nanoparticles as Catalysts

    An approach using cobalt metal-organic frameworks (Co-MOF) as precursors is established for the fabrication of cobalt nanoparticles in porous carbon shells (core/shell Co@C). Chemical vapor deposition of ethyne is used for controlling the reduction of cobalt nanoclusters in the MOF and the spontaneous formation of the porous carbon shells. The metallic cobalt cores formed are up to 4 - 6 nm with the crystal phase varying between hexagonally-close-packed (hcp) and face-centre-packed (fcc). The porous carbon shells change from amorphous to graphene with the ethyne deposition temperature increasing from 400 to 600 oC. The core/shell Co@C nanoparticles exhibit high catalytic activity in selectively converting syngas (CTY: 254.1 - 312.1 μmolCO·gCo-1·s-1) into hydrocarbons (4.0 - 5.2 gHC·g-cat-1·h-1) at 260 oC. As well as the crystal size and phase, the coordination numbers of the cobalt to oxygen and to other cobalt atoms on the surface of the cobalt nanoparticles, and the permeability of the porous carbon shell have been related to the catalytic performance in FTS reactions

    Deficits in ascending pain modulation pathways in breast cancer survivors with chronic neuropathic pain: A resting-state fMRI study

    PurposeBreast cancer (BC) is the highest frequent malignancy in women globally. Approximately 25–60% of BC patients with chronic neuropathic pain (CNP) result from advances in treating BC. Since the CNP mechanism is unclear, the various treatment methods for CNP are limited. We aimed to explore the brain alternations in BC patients with CNP and the relationship between depression and CNP utilizing resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI).MethodsTo collect the data, the female BC survivors with CNP (n = 20) and healthy controls (n = 20) underwent rs-fMRI. We calculated and compared the functional connectivity (FC) between the two groups using the thalamus and periaqueductal gray (PAG) as seed regions.ResultsPatients with BC showed increased depression and FC between the thalamus and primary somatosensory cortices (SI). Moreover, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Depression (HADS-D) and pain duration were linked positively to the strength of FC from the thalamus to the SI. Furthermore, the thalamus-SI FC mediated the impact of pain duration on HADS-D.ConclusionIn BC patients with CNP, the ascending pain regulation mechanism is impaired and strongly associated with chronic pain and accompanying depression. This research increased our knowledge of the pathophysiology of CNP in patients with BC, which will aid in determining the optimal therapeutic strategy for those patients

    The Validation of the Decisional and Emotional Forgiveness Scale among a Chinese Sample: The Mediating Role of Forgiveness between Stress Perception and Resilience

    This study aimed to revise and test the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Decisional and Emotional Forgiveness Scale. In experiment 1, 1171 college students and postgraduates were invited to complete the questionnaire that provides the data for this scale. The results from this, following exploratory factor analysis, showed that the factor loading values met the standards detailed in the past literature, except in the case of item C2. The results of confirmatory factor analysis (while excluding item C2) showed a good structure validity. Furthermore, it also showed that a four-factor model fit the data well and that the reliability values (including internal consistency and test–retest reliability) met the commonly held standards. Decisional and emotional forgiveness subfactors were significantly correlated with transgression-related interpersonal motivations and self-construal. Experiment 2 was conducted in order to further confirm the validity of the scale: the results of mediated analysis showed that emotional forgiveness and the path from decisional forgiveness to emotional forgiveness could mediate the relationship between stress perception and resilience. Thus, the revised Chinese version of the Decisional and Emotional Forgiveness Scale showed good reliability and validity within a Chinese sample, demonstrating its usability as an effective tool to evaluate college students’ level of decisional and emotional forgiveness

    It is of great significance for indoor radon radiation protection to study the mechanism of radon migration systematically caused by heat-moisture coupled transfer in building walls. The radon migration model of porous building walls under the influence of the heat-moisture coupled model is built. On the base of it, four types of different temperature and humidity conditions, including high temperature and high humidity, high temperature and low humidity, low temperature and high humidity and low temperature and low humidity, and the real ambient temperature, relative humidity conditions in a southern city of China in July, are set for the numerical simulation. The migration mechanism of the radon through the wall influenced by outdoor temperature and humidity conditions, including its emanation, diffusion and condensation, is studied by numerical simulation, and the main factors leading the results are analyzed, which provides some reference for indoor radon radiation protection

    The methanol–toluene alkylation process over zeolites catalysts offers a promising route for the production of p-xylene from low-cost feedstocks. Herein, we present a catalyst by preparing a core-shell aluminosilicate zeolite with an epitaxial silicalite-1 shell that passivates acid sites on the exterior surfaces. The para-selectivity was obviously increased due to the inhibition of the unselective isomerization of p-xylene over the external acid sites, and the open porous structure of the silicalite-1 shell ensured the mass transfer of reactants and products. Meanwhile, the carbon deposition was suppressed over HZSM-5@silicalite-1 catalysts, as a result of the decreased external acid sites. Furthermore, pulse chromatographic experiments revealed that the silicalite-1 coating could also improve the separation efficiency of p-xylene over o-xylene and m-xylene, due to the steric hindrance and extended diffusion path, resulting in a higher selectivity for p-xylene compared to that of the parent HZSM-5. The HZSM-5@4%S-1 catalyst showed the highest p-xylene selectivity (>80%) and methanol efficiency (66%), with good catalytic stability throughout the 170 h reaction time
