Edge Channel Interference Controlled by Landau Level Filling
We study the visibility of Aharonov-Bohm interference in an electronic
Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) in the integer quantum Hall regime. The
visibility is controlled by the filling factor and is observed only
between and 1.0, with an unexpected maximum near .
Three energy scales extracted from the temperature and voltage dependences of
the visibility change in a very similar way with the filling factor, indicating
that the different aspects of the interference depend sensitively on the local
structure of the compressible and incompressible strips forming the quantum
Hall edge channels.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, final version accepted for publication in Phys.

Local Synthesis and Tooth Contact Analysis of Face-Milled, Uniform Tooth Height Spiral Bevel Gears
Face-milled spiral bevel gears with uniform tooth height are considered. An approach is proposed for the design of low-noise and localized bearing contact of such gears. The approach is based on the mismatch of contacting surfaces and permits two types of bearing contact either directed longitudinally or across the surface to be obtained. Conditions to avoid undercutting were determined. A Tooth Contact Analysis (TCA) was developed. This analysis was used to determine the influence of misalignment on meshing and contact of the spiral bevel gears. A numerical example that illustrates the theory developed is provided
Counting Statistics and Dephasing Transition in an Electronic Mach-Zehnder Interferometer
It was recently suggested that a novel type of phase transition may occur in
the visibility of electronic Mach-Zehnder Interferometers. Here, we present
experimental evidence for the existence of this transition. The transition is
induced by strongly non-Gaussian noise that originates from the strong coupling
of a quantum point contact to the interferometer. We provide a transparent
physical picture of the effect, by exploiting a close analogy to the
neutrino-oscillations of particle physics. In addition, our experiment
constitutes a probe of the singularity of the elusive full counting statistics
of a quantum point contact.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures (+Supplement 8 pages, 9 figures
Symmetry of Magnetically Ordered Quasicrystals
The notion of magnetic symmetry is reexamined in light of the recent
observation of long range magnetic order in icosahedral quasicrystals [Charrier
et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 4637 (1997)]. The relation between the symmetry of
a magnetically-ordered (periodic or quasiperiodic) crystal, given in terms of a
``spin space group,'' and its neutron diffraction diagram is established. In
doing so, an outline of a symmetry classification scheme for magnetically
ordered quasiperiodic crystals is provided. Predictions are given for the
expected diffraction patterns of magnetically ordered icosahedral crystals,
provided their symmetry is well described by icosahedral spin space groups.Comment: 5 pages. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Letter
Nonlocal vortex motion in mesoscopic amorphous Nb0.7Ge0.3 structures
We study nonlocal vortex transport in mesoscopic amorphous Nb0.7Ge0.3
samples. A dc current I is passed through a wire connected via a perpendicular
channel, of a length L= 2-5 um, with a pair of voltage probes where a nonlocal
response Vnl ~ I is measured. The maximum of Rnl=Vnl/I for a given temperature
occurs at an L-independent magnetic field and is proportional to 1/L. The
results are interpreted in terms of the dissipative vortex motion along the
channel driven by a remote current, and can be understood in terms of a simple
model.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Step Bunching with Alternation of Structural Parameters
By taking account of the alternation of structural parameters, we study
bunching of impermeable steps induced by drift of adatoms on a vicinal face of
Si(001). With the alternation of diffusion coefficient, the step bunching
occurs irrespective of the direction of the drift if the step distance is
large. Like the bunching of permeable steps, the type of large terraces is
determined by the drift direction. With step-down drift, step bunches grows
faster than those with step-up drift. The ratio of the growth rates is larger
than the ratio of the diffusion coefficients. Evaporation of adatoms, which
does not cause the step bunching, decreases the difference. If only the
alternation of kinetic coefficient is taken into account, the step bunching
occurs with step-down drift. In an early stage, the initial fluctuation of the
step distance determines the type of large terraces, but in a late stage, the
type of large terraces is opposite to the case of alternating diffusion
coefficient.Comment: 8pages, 16 figure
Detailed Classification of Swift's Gamma-Ray Bursts
Earlier classification analyses found three types of gamma-ray bursts (short,
long and intermediate in duration) in the BATSE sample. Recent works have shown
that these three groups are also present in the RHESSI and the BeppoSAX
databases. The duration distribution analysis of the bursts observed by the
Swift satellite also favors the three-component model. In this paper, we extend
the analysis of the Swift data with spectral information. We show, using the
spectral hardness and the duration simultaneously, that the maximum likelihood
method favors the three-component against the two-component model. The
likelihood also shows that a fourth component is not needed.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa
