    Get PDF
Objective: The study aimed to dictate the capability of cinnamon supplements in reducing fasting blood sugar levels (FBS mg/dl) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c %) for patients with diabetes mellitus II (DMII). Comparing pre and post-intervention glycemic markers with aloe vera, ginseng, and anti-diabetic medication to determine if herbal supplements are an effective complementary alternative medicine (CAM) treatment for DMII. Methods: The range of articles gathered consisted of 175 through MEDLINE and 510 through Google Scholar; these platforms allowed access to MEDLINE and ScienceDirect articles but were reduced to 40 based on search terms such as “Cinnamomum cassia.” ” Cinnamomum verum,” “Diabetes Mellitus II,” “fasting blood sugar, and ”glycated hemoglobin.” The meta-analysis consisted of sixteen clinical trials from 2006-2022. The study designs were randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, and triple-blind trials. Results:The data collection showed variability of methodology techniques such as distinctive dose ranges (500mg, 1g, 1.5g, 2g, 3g, and 6g), study lengths, anti-diabetic medication use, and cinnamon species. Post-intervention trials had sparse reduction ranges from -3mg/dl to -21.78mg/dl and A1C of Conclusion: Cinnamon supplements can reduce FBS and A1C levels, although these results are not sustainable for a chronic patient with DMII, making it a non-reliable treatment option for DMII. More research clinical trials should be performed on cinnamon supplements to conclude more accurate, evidence-based recommendations

Wal-Mart v. Dukes: The Feminist Case Against Individualized Adjudication

    Get PDF
Discussions of due process often focus on individualizing trials in order to provide persons an opportunity to be heard. In keeping with this traditional understanding, Justice Antonin Scalia’s majority opinion denying class certification in Wal-Mart v. Dukes describes class actions as “an exception to the usual rule that litigation is conducted by and on behalf of the individual named parties only.” This Comment grapples with the normative implications of the American legal focus on individualized (rather than collective) adjudication. It argues that the “usual rule” of individualized adjudication makes it much more difficult for the American legal system to adequately evaluate claims of widespread discrimination. When such claims arise from the behavior of numerous bad actors operating within an institutional context, the adjudicative focus on individuality tends to obscure how oppressive institutional dynamics have made the discrimination possible. These dynamics often only become evident when individual experiences are considered in the aggregate, in two key ways. First, as the #MeToo movement shows, aggregation of claims results in believability: one woman accusing a powerful man of sexual misconduct can be easily dismissed, but hundreds of accusers are more difficult to ignore. Second, aggregating claims can often demonstrate the institutional dimension of discrimination, proving that discriminatory behavior is not due to a single bad actor, but rather has been enabled by institutional structures that must be changed to prevent the behavior from recurring

& Tang, 2015). For this reason, organizations look for interventions to improve the health of their employees. The practice of Mindfulness has proven to be a new alternative to reduce work-related stress (Allexandre et al., 2016; Dos Santos, Kozasa, Carmagnani, Tanaka, Lacerda, & Nogueira, 2016; Franco, 2009 y Luken & Sammons, 2016). It has been proven its effectiveness in reducing symptoms of burnout, improving ethics and morale of workers, their emotional intelligence and leadership (Vich, 2015). In this work, we conducted a literature review of scientific research the sources used in this document were selected between the periods from 2006 until 2016 from databases of the University of Rosario. With the purpose of presenting a document that shows how the practice of mindfulness has relevance in the workplace, what is their contribution to the management of stress and burnout, and its impact on other processes relevant for developing or improve the workplace

Trauma: Forced Sterilizations of Latina Women in the United States

    Get PDF
The purpose of our research is to understand the history of how American society has viewed Latina women and the oppression they have faced mainly due to forced sterilizations. Between the 1930s and 1970s, Latinos in the United States were forced to undergo sterilizations which have been a large contributor to the cause of multiple underlying mental health issues. Although the book Taína, written by Ernesto Quiñónez, is considered fiction, we understand that many of Quiñónez\u27s stories within the book are based on actual events that took place in his life. As a result, his literary work will be utilized throughout our study. Aside from Taína, we will primarily be referring to the work of Rosie Pérez and her documentary, Yo soy boricua pa\u27que tú lo sepas (I\u27am Boricua, Just So You Know!). The documentary explores Puerto Ricans and the struggles they have endured while being under the control of the United States. In addition, Cathy Caruth\u27s academic work provides essential information on \u27Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder\u27 (PTSD) that helps us understand the trauma Puerto Rican women endured. By evaluating the sources provided, our research seeks to understand how these sterilizations have impacted women\u27s mental health. As well as identify the reasoning and cause as to why Puerto Rican women were chosen to undergo these life-changing procedures.https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/fsrs2021/1033/thumbnail.jp

Broken Film Narratives: The Invisibility of Latinx Women in Education Through Film and Literature

    Get PDF
Our research aims to explore the lack of Latinx women being portrayed in films with education as the central theme. Although there are Latinx women in films today, they are not portrayed in an entirely positive light. They are commonly represented in an oversexualized manner compared to latinx men who are portrayed as hard workers and commonly seeking education. A good example would be the film McFarland USA by Niki Caro in which young male adolescents are a part of a cross country team. Although the film does a great job of portraying their lives as latinx adolescents living in the United States, the film fails to depict the women’s team overall. There are films on education that portray women, such as Real Women Have Curves by Patricia Cardoso, a coming-of-age film depicting a young Latina struggling to defend her right to obtain a higher education. However, a common theme throughout the film is her mother commenting on her body and her duties as a woman in serving men. As a result, we are looking to investigate the lack of Latinx women being depicted in a positive light in current films

The gene YALI0E20207g from Yarrowia lipolytica encodes an N-acetylglucosamine kinase implicated in the regulated expression of the genes from the N-acetylglucosamine assimilatory pathway

This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License. The non-conventional yeast Yarrowia lipolyticapossesses an ORF, YALI0E20207g, which encodes a protein with an amino acid sequence similar to hexokinases fromdifferent organisms. We have cloned that gene and determined several enzymatic properties of its encoded protein showing that it is an N-acetylglucosamine (NAGA) kinase. This conclusion was supported by the lack of growth in NAGA of a strain carrying a YALI0E20207g deletion. We named this gene YlNAG5. Expression of YlNAG5 as well as that of the genes encoding the enzymes of the NAGA catabolic pathway - identified by a BLAST search - was induced by this sugar. Deletion of YlNAG5 rendered that expression independent of the presence of NAGA in the medium and reintroduction of the gene restored the inducibility, indicating that YlNag5 participates in the transcriptional regulation of the NAGA assimilatory pathway genes. Expression of YlNAG5 was increased during sporulation and homozygous Ylnag5/Ylnag5 diploid strains sporulated very poorly as compared with a wild type isogenic control strain pointing to a participation of the protein in the process. Overexpression of YlNAG5 allowed growth in glucose of an Ylhxk1 glk1 double mutant and produced, in a wild type background, aberrant morphologies in different media. Expression of the gene in a Saccharomyces cerevisiae hxk1 hxk2 glk1 triple mutant restored ability to grow in glucose. This work was supported by grant BFU2010-19628-C02-02 from the Spanish Ministry for Science and Innovation (MICINN, now MINECO).Peer Reviewe

The sacha inchi oil (Plukenetia volubilis L.), seed originally from Peru, recently grown in equatorial lands, possesses omega-3, omega-6, omega-9 at levels 51,94%, 34,37% and 7,97%. Sacha inchi oil was characterized and compared to canola oil (Brassica napus and B. rapa), an oily seed also planted recently in Ecuador containing omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 at levels of 12,76%, 17,26% y 63,42%. It was determined which is the best method of oil extraction in these seeds, physicochemical analysis was carried out for the extracted oil and its nutritional composition was established through a fatty acids profile. Three methods of oil extraction were evaluated: mechanical digestion, organic solvent extraction and cold pressing. The utilized experimental design was split plots with six treatments and five variables: acidity percentage, peroxide index, output percentage, omega-3 and omega-9 content. The obtained data from the solution variables were analyzed through ANOVA, tukey test and a student t test. Of all the extraction methods, mechanical digestion and cold pressing provided favorable statistic difference in front of the specification and references. However, from the quality point of view, the best method of oil extraction in both seeds is cold pressing accomplishing the national and international established standards.
