Transport model analysis of particle correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions at femtometer scales
The pion source as seen through HBT correlations at RHIC energies is
investigated within the UrQMD approach. We find that the calculated transverse
momentum, centrality, and system size dependence of the Pratt-HBT radii
and are reasonably well in line with experimental data. The predicted
values in central heavy ion collisions are larger as compared to
experimental data. The corresponding quantity of the
pion emission source is somewhat larger than experimental estimates.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, to be published in PR
Rotatum of Light
Vortices are ubiquitous in nature and can be observed in fluids, condensed
matter, and even in the formation of galaxies. Light, too, can evolve like a
vortex. Optical vortices are exploited in light-matter interaction, free-space
communications, and imaging. Here, we introduce optical rotatum; a new
degree-of-freedom of light in which an optical vortex experiences a quadratic
chirp in its orbital angular momentum along the optical path. We show that such
an adiabatic deformation of topology is associated with the accumulation of a
Berry phase factor which in turn perturbs the propagation constant (spatial
frequency) of the beam. Remarkably, the spatial structure of optical rotatum
follows a logarithmic spiral; a signature that is commonly seen in the pattern
formation of seashells and galaxies. Our work expands previous literature on
structured light, offers new modalities for light-matter interaction,
communications, and sensing, and hints to analogous effects in condensed matter

Pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution and mass balance of radiolabeled dihydroartemisinin in male rats
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Dihydroartemisinin (DHA), a powerful anti-malarial drug, has been used as monotherapy and artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) for more than decades. So far, however, the tissue distribution and metabolic profile of DHA data are not available from animal and humans.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution, mass balance, and elimination of [<sup>14</sup>C] DHA have been studieded in rats following a single intravenous administration. Protein binding was performed with rat and human plasma. Drug concentrations were obtained up to 192 hr from measurements of total radioactivity and drug concentration to determine the contribution by the parent and metabolites to the total dose of drug injected from whole blood, plasma, urine and faecal samples.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Drug was widely distributed after 1 hr and rapidly declined at 24 hr in all tissues except spleen until 96 hrs. Only 0.81% of the total radioactivity was detected in rat brain tissue. DHA revealed a high binding capacity with both rat and human plasma proteins (76–82%). The concentration of total radioactivity in the plasma fraction was less than 25% of that in blood total. Metabolism of DHA was observed with high excretion via bile into intestines and approximately 89–95% dose of all conjugations were accounted for in blood, urine and faeces. However, the majority of elimination of [<sup>14</sup>C] DHA was through urinary excretion (52% dose). The mean terminal half-lives of plasma and blood radioactivity (75.57–122.13 h) were significantly prolonged compared with that of unchanged DHA (1.03 h).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In rat brain, the total concentration of [<sup>14</sup>C] was 2-fold higher than that in plasma, indicating the radioactivity could easily penetrate the brain-blood barrier. Total radioactivity distributed in RBC was about three- to four-fold higher than that in plasma, suggesting that the powerful anti-malarial potency of DHA in the treatment of blood stage malaria may relate to the high RBC binding. Biliary excretion and multiple concentration peaks of DHA have been demonstrated with high urinary excretion due to a most likely drug re-absorption in the intestines (enterohepatic circulation). The long lasting metabolites of DHA (> 192 hr) in the rats may be also related to the enterohepatic circulation.</p
Extension and approximation of -subharmonic functions
Let be a bounded domain, and let be a
real-valued function defined on the whole topological boundary . The aim of this paper is to find a characterization of the functions
which can be extended to the inside to a -subharmonic function under
suitable assumptions on . We shall do so by using a function algebraic
approach with focus on -subharmonic functions defined on compact sets. We
end this note with some remarks on approximation of -subharmonic functions
System-size dependence of the pion freeze-out volume as a potential signature for the phase transition to a Quark Gluon Plasma
Hanburry-Brown-Twiss (HBT) correlation functions and radii of negatively
charged pions from C+C, Si+Si, Cu+Cu, and In+In at lower RHIC/SPS energies are
calculated with the UrQMD transport model and the CRAB analyzing program. We
find a minimum in the excitation function of the pion freeze-out volume at low
transverse momenta and around GeV which can be related to
the transition from hadronic to string matter (which might be interpreted as a
pre-cursor of the QGP). The existence of the minimum is explained by the
competition of two mechanisms of the particle production, resonance decays and

Meningococcal Disease in Patients With Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection: A Review of Cases Reported Through Active Surveillance in the United States, 2000-2008.
BackgroundAlthough human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is an established risk factor for several bacterial infections, the association between HIV infection and meningococcal disease remains unclear.MethodsExpanded chart reviews were completed on persons with meningococcal disease and HIV infection reported from 2000 through 2008 from 9 US sites participating in an active population-based surveillance system for meningococcal disease. The incidence of meningococcal disease among patients meeting Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) surveillance criteria was estimated using data from the National HIV Surveillance System for the participating sites.ResultsThirty-three cases of meningococcal disease in individuals with HIV infection were reported from participating sites, representing 2.0% of all reported meningococcal disease cases. Most (75.8%) persons with HIV infection were adult males aged 25 to 64 years old. Among all meningococcal disease cases aged 25 to 64 years old, case fatality ratios were similar among HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected persons (13.3% vs 10.6%; P = .6). The cumulative, mean incidence of meningococcal disease among patients aged 25 to 64 years old with HIV infection ever classified as AIDS was 3.5 cases per 100000 person years (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.1-5.6), compared with 0.3 cases per 100000 person years (95% CI, 0.3-0.3) for persons of the same age group not reported to have AIDS (relative risk = 12.9; 95% CI, 7.9-20.9).ConclusionsIndividuals with HIV infection meeting the AIDS surveillance case definition have a higher incidence of meningococcal disease compared with the general adult population
A Turnover in the Galaxy Main Sequence of Star Formation at for Redshifts
The relationship between galaxy star formation rates (SFR) and stellar masses
() is re-examined using a mass-selected sample of 62,000
star-forming galaxies at in the COSMOS 2-deg field. Using new
far-infrared photometry from -PACS and SPIRE and -MIPS 24
m, along with derived infrared luminosities from the NRK method based on
galaxies' locations in the restframe color-color diagram vs. , we are able to more accurately determine total SFRs for our complete
sample. At all redshifts, the relationship between median and
follows a power-law at low stellar masses, and flattens to nearly constant SFR
at high stellar masses. We describe a new parameterization that provides the
best fit to the main sequence and characterizes the low mass power-law slope,
turnover mass, and overall scaling. The turnover in the main sequence occurs at
a characteristic mass of about at all redshifts.
The low mass power-law slope ranges from 0.9-1.3 and the overall scaling rises
in SFR as a function of . A broken power-law fit below
and above the turnover mass gives relationships of below the turnover mass and above
the turnover mass. Galaxies more massive than have on average, a much lower specific star formation rate (sSFR) than
would be expected by simply extrapolating the traditional linear fit to the
