    An AeroCom–AeroSat study: intercomparison of satellite AOD datasets for aerosol model evaluation

    To better understand and characterize current uncertainties in the important observational constraint of climate models of aerosol optical depth (AOD), we evaluate and intercompare 14 satellite products, representing nine different retrieval algorithm families using observations from five different sensors on six different platforms. The satellite products (super-observations consisting of 1 degrees x 1 degrees daily aggregated retrievals drawn from the years 2006, 2008 and 2010) are evaluated with AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) and Maritime Aerosol Network (MAN) data. Results show that different products exhibit different regionally varying biases (both under- and overestimates) that may reach +/- 50 %, although a typical bias would be 15 %-25 % (depending on the product). In addition to these biases, the products exhibit random errors that can be 1.6 to 3 times as large. Most products show similar performance, although there are a few exceptions with either larger biases or larger random errors. The intercomparison of satellite products extends this analysis and provides spatial context to it. In particular, we show that aggregated satellite AOD agrees much better than the spatial coverage (often driven by cloud masks) within the 1 degrees x 1 degrees grid cells. Up to similar to 50 % of the difference between satellite AOD is attributed to cloud contamination. The diversity in AOD products shows clear spatial patterns and varies from 10 % (parts of the ocean) to 100 % (central Asia and Australia). More importantly, we show that the diversity may be used as an indication of AOD uncertainty, at least for the better performing products. This provides modellers with a global map of expected AOD uncertainty in satellite products, allows assessment of products away from AERONET sites, can provide guidance for future AERONET locations and offers suggestions for product improvements. We account for statistical and sampling noise in our analyses. Sampling noise, variations due to the evaluation of different subsets of the data, causes important changes in error metrics.     Implementing virtual collaborative inquiry practises in a middle-school context

    The aim of the present study was to investigate the challenges that relate to the implementation of virtual inquiry practises in middle school. The case was a school course in which a group of Finnish students (N = 14) and teachers (N = 7) completed group inquiries through virtual collaboration, using a web-based learning environment. The task was to accomplish a cross-disciplinary inquiry into cultural issues. The students worked mainly at home and took much responsibility for their course achievements. The investigators analysed the pedagogical design of the course and the content of the participants' interaction patterns in the web-based environment, using qualitative content analysis and social network analysis. The findings suggest that the students succeeded in producing distinctive cultural products, and both the students and the teachers adopted novel roles during the inquiry. The web-based learning environment was used more as a coordination tool for organizing the collaborative work than as a forum for epistemic inquiry.     Technical note: Emulation of a large-eddy simulator for stratocumulus clouds in a general circulation model

    Here we present for the first time a proof of concept for an emulation-based method that uses a large-eddy simulations (LESs) to present sub-grid cloud processes in a general circulation model (GCM). We focus on two key variables affecting the properties of shallow marine clouds: updraft velocity and precipitation formation. The LES is able to describe these processes with high resolution accounting for the realistic variability in cloud properties. We show that the selected emulation method is able to represent the LES outcome with relatively good accuracy and that the updraft velocity and precipitation emulators can be coupled with the GCM practically without increasing the computational costs. We also show that the emulators influence the climate simulated by the GCM but do not consistently improve or worsen the agreement with observations on cloud-related properties, although especially the updraft velocity at cloud base is better captured. A more quantitative evaluation of the emulator impacts against observations would, however, have required model re-tuning, which is a significant task and thus could not be included in this proof-of-concept study. All in all, the approach introduced here is a promising candidate for representing detailed cloud- and aerosol-related sub-grid processes in GCMs. Further development work together with increasing computing capacity can be expected to improve the accuracy and the applicability of the approach in climate simulations.</p

    Innovation Across Cultures: Connecting Leadership, Identification, and Creative Behavior in Organizations

    Innovation is considered essential for today's organizations to survive and thrive. Researchers have also stressed the importance of leadership as a driver of followers' innovative work behavior (FIB). Yet, despite a large amount of research, three areas remain understudied: (a) The relative importance of different forms of leadership for FIB; (b) the mechanisms through which leadership impacts FIB; and (c) the degree to which relationships between leadership and FIB are generalizable across cultures. To address these lacunae, we propose an integrated model connecting four types of positive leadership behaviors, two types of identification (as mediating variables), and FIB. We tested our model in a global data set comprising responses of N = 7,225 participants from 23 countries, grouped into nine cultural clusters. Our results indicate that perceived LMX quality was the strongest relative predictor of FIB. Furthermore, the relationships between both perceived LMX quality and identity leadership with FIB were mediated by social identification. The indirect effect of LMX on FIB via social identification was stable across clusters, whereas the indirect effects of the other forms of leadership on FIB via social identification were stronger in countries high versus low on collectivism.
