This thesis discusses the role of art, culture and creative industries in urban renewal processes. The âCreative Cityâ has been the focus of various urban sciences, debating the future of post industrial cities in an service and knowledge based economy. Considering theories of urban renewal and gentrification the thesis analyses the places used for artistic, cultural or creative operations in a part of the 15th Viennese district. This district represents an urban quarter between the centre and the outskirts of a european city and between different possible developments such as increased residental function, becoming a hotspot for young people or urban decay. Mapping the structures of the buildings as well as the functions of the ground floor, the backyards and the industrial buildings allows for various conclusions regarding the different atmospheres found in the district. The map also points out the distribution of premises used for art, culture and creative industries and shows the amount of unused spaces on the ground floor. Available demographic data offers further knowledge of the area. Interviews with the people operating cultural or creative enterprises give some insight in their choice of location and how they observe the district. The thesis describes patterns of use and shows existing and potential spaces for cultural and creative developments
Low-noise supercontinuum generation in chiral all-normal dispersion photonic crystal fibers
We present the advantages of supercontinuum generation in chiral, therefore
circularly birefringent, all-normal dispersion fibers. Due to the absence of
nonlinear power transfer between the polarization eigenstates of the fiber,
chiral all-normal dispersion fibers do not exhibit any polarization
instabilities and thus are an ideal platform for low-noise supercontinuum
generation. By pumping a chiral all-normal dispersion fiber at 802 nm, we
obtained an octave-spanning, robustly circularly polarized supercontinuum with
low-noise.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
FACT: Federated Adversarial Cross Training
Federated Learning (FL) facilitates distributed model development to
aggregate multiple confidential data sources. The information transfer among
clients can be compromised by distributional differences, i.e., by non-i.i.d.
data. A particularly challenging scenario is the federated model adaptation to
a target client without access to annotated data. We propose Federated
Adversarial Cross Training (FACT), which uses the implicit domain differences
between source clients to identify domain shifts in the target domain. In each
round of FL, FACT cross initializes a pair of source clients to generate domain
specialized representations which are then used as a direct adversary to learn
a domain invariant data representation. We empirically show that FACT
outperforms state-of-the-art federated, non-federated and source-free domain
adaptation models on three popular multi-source-single-target benchmarks, and
state-of-the-art Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) models on
single-source-single-target experiments. We further study FACT's behavior with
respect to communication restrictions and the number of participating clients
Changes of the tropical glaciers throughout Peru between 2000 and 2016 â mass balance and area fluctuations
Glaciers in tropical regions are very sensitive to climatic variations and thus strongly affected by climate change. The majority of the tropical glaciers worldwide are located in the Peruvian Andes, which have shown significant ice loss in the last century. Here, we present the first multi-temporal, region-wide survey of geodetic mass balances and glacier area fluctuations throughout Peru covering the period 2000â2016. Glacier extents are derived from Landsat imagery by performing automatic glacier delineation based on a combination of the NDSI and band ratio method and final manual inspection and correction. The mapping of debris-covered glacier extents is supported by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) coherence information. A total glacier area loss of âkm2 (â29â%, â34.3âkm2âaâ1) is obtained for the study period. Using interferometric satellite SAR acquisitions, bi-temporal geodetic mass balances are derived. An average specific mass balance of âkgâmâ2âaâ1 is found throughout Peru for the period 2000â2016. However, there are strong regional and temporal differences in the mass budgets ranging from 45±97 to âkgâmâ2âaâ1. The ice loss increased towards the end of the observation period. Between 2013 and 2016, a retreat of the glacierized area of âkm2 (â16â%, â101.9âkm2âaâ1) is mapped and the average mass budget amounts to âkgâmâ2âaâ1. The glacier changes revealed can be attributed to changes in the climatic settings in the study region, derived from ERA-Interim reanalysis data and the Oceanic Nino Index. The intense El Niño activities in 2015/16 are most likely the trigger for the increased change rates in the time interval 2013â2016. Our observations provide fundamental information on the current dramatic glacier changes for local authorities and for the calibration and validation of glacier change projections

Determining the Orientation of Low Resolution Images of a De-Bruijn Tracking Pattern with a CNN
Inside-out optical 2D tracking of tangible objects on a surface oftentimes uses a high-resolution pattern printed on the surface. While De-Bruijn-torus patterns offer maximum information density, their orientation must be known to decode them. Determining the orientation is challenging for patterns with very fine details; traditional algorithms, such as Hough Lines, do not work reliably. We show that a convolutional neural network can reliably determine the orientation of quasi-random bitmaps with 6 à 6 pixels per block within 36 à 36 pixel images taken by a mouse sensor. Mean error rate is below 2°. Furthermore, our model outperformed Hough Lines in a test with arbitrarily rotated low-resolution rectangles. This implies that CNN-based rotation-detection might also be applicable for more general use cases
