    Get PDF
The synthesis and bioactivity of gold nanoparticles has been extensively studied. However, the antibacterial activity of gold nano particles individually or in combination with different antibiotics has not been demonstrated. In the present study the effect of gold nano particles on the antibacterial activity of different antibiotics was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus, k.pnemonea, P.aureginosa, E.coli. Disk diffusion method was used to determine the antibacterial activity of various antibiotics in the absence and presence of sub inhibitory concentration of gold nano particles. A clinical isolates of S. aureus, k.pnemonea, p.aureginosa,E.coli.  were used as the test strains. In the presence of sub-inhibitory concentration of gold nano particles the antibacterial activities of all antibiotics have . Increased from minimum 2 mm to a maximum of 8 mm. The highest increase was observed for ceftazidime followed by genthamycin. These results signify that the gold nano particles potentiate the antimicrobial action of cephalosporins and amino glycosides, suggesting a possible utilization of nano compounds in combination therapy against S. aureus, k.pnemonea, p.aureginosa,E.coli

New Fish meal plant at Karwar to process oil sardine

    Get PDF
Karnataka recorded an appreciable catch of 1,00,179 t of oil sardine in 2007. The boom in oil sardine landings has lead to the establishment of a new fish meal plant at Baithkol landing centre of Karwar which became functional in March, 2008 (Fig. 1). The Karnataka Fisheries Development Board has leased out the fish meal plant to a private company, Sai Annapoorna Bio-Protein Private Ltd. The products manufactured by the fish meal plant are fish oil and fish meal powder. They supply fish oil to CP Aquamarine which exports the fish oil to south-east Asian countries such as Vietnam and Thailand. The fish meal powder is used as prawn feed and it is procured and marketed by CP Aquamarine. The company procures fish from Mangalore to Goa from boat owners and agents. The average supply of fish is 200 t/day. The company processes only oil sardine (Sardinella longiceps) for the manufacture of fish meal and fish oil

Hyperphosphatemia in the absence of renal failure is an unusual occurrence, particularly in children, but is a common primary feature of familial hyperphosphatemic tumor calcinosis. We report a child with hyperphosphatemia who presented with multiple episodes of neurologic dysfunction involving lower motor neuron facial nerve palsy along with sequential visual loss. He also had an episode of stroke. There was an extensive metastatic calcification of soft tissue and vasculature. Hyperphosphatemia with normal serum alkaline phosphatase, calcium, parathyroid hormone, and renal function was noted. He was managed with hemodialysis and sevelamer (3 months) without much success in reducing serum phosphate level, requiring continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (3 years). Intact fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) was undetectable, with C-terminal FGF23 fragments significantly elevated (2575 RU/ml, normal A (p.N162K) mutation in FGF23 exon 3, confirming the diagnoses of primary FGF23 deficiency, the first case to be reported from India

Naringin is a flavanone found in citrus fruits and vegetables which are responsible for the asperity, due to which citrus fruit are unable to consume and from which we are unable to get the valuable nutrition in our body. To overcome this asperity in citrus fruits, present investigation is carried out, which provides a detailed report of isolation and screening of naringinase producing micro-organisms from different samples collected from Kalyan -Karnataka region, India. A sum of around 50 strains were isolated from 20 different samples which showed the positive result for naringinase activity, among 50 strains obtained 42 strains are fungi and remaining 8 were bacteria which showed good to moderate results in preliminary screening by 1% FeCl3 method, further 5 fungi isolates which showed a good naringinase activity in submerged fermentation were assayed by Spectrophotometric method. As a result, KLA-80 showed a maximum result with an activity of 559 U/ml. Further from the identification of the isolate KLA-80 by BLAST analysis found to be having similarity with Aspergillus flavus and the accession number of OQ152018 is obtained

Microwave Assisted Rapid and Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using a Pigment Produced by Streptomyces coelicolor

    Get PDF
Traditional synthesis of silver nanoparticles using chemical methods produces toxic substances. In contrast biological synthesis is regarded as a safe and nontoxic process but the major drawback of biological synthesis is, this process is slow. In the present investigation, we developed a rapid and green synthesis of silver nanoparticles employing a pigment produced by Streptomyces coelicolor klmp33 in just 90 s. The silver nanoparticles were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The biobased synthesis developed in this method is a safe, rapid, and appropriate way for bulky synthesis of silver nanoparticles

Comparative study (II): On the longevity of pupa and adult moths in selected few bivoltine purelines of silkworm Bombyx mori (L) in all the seasons of the year.

A comparative study utilizing the six multivoltines, in three seasons of the year between pupal and adult moth stage of silkworm of reveals a positive significance. Pupal duration was calculated after chrysalis stage among six multivoltines clearly indicated that the duration of pupae in the pre race is lowest where as the Daizo race exhibited the longest pupal duration of 240 hours. Silkworm adult life span evaluated in three seasons in the two sexes (male moth and female moth) it is clear that race pre exhibited shortest adult life span of 84 hours in mated males and 114 hours in mated females during pre-monsoon period and Daizo race revealed prolonged adult life span 222 hours in unmated males and 242 hours in unmated females during post-monsoon period. In the present studies among the two sexes, the unmated (virgin) male and females moths exhibited the longest life span than those of mated male and female moths. The influence of three seasons on adult life span is very clear from the experiment. The effect of pre-monsoon is more conspicuous (revealing short lifespan) where as in post-monsoon season lifespan is longest both in the pupal and adult. The results obtained from the present studies clearly demonstrate that racial differences, seasonal impact and sex wise differences are important in the expression of adult longevity
