Building research capacity in low- and middle-income countries and pandemic preparedness: Lessons learned and future directions
Research capacity is a critical component of pandemic preparedness, as highlighted by the challenges faced during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Recent global initiatives, such as the Research & Development Task Force of the Global Health Security Agenda and the World Health Assembly\u27s resolution on strengthening clinical trials, emphasize the need for robust research capabilities. This Perspective discusses the experiences of leaders in infectious disease research and capacity building in low- and middle-income countries, focusing on Colombia, Jamaica, and Pakistan. These case studies underscore the importance of collaborative efforts, interdisciplinary training, and global partnerships in pandemic response. The experiences highlight the necessity for rapid pathogen identification, capacity for genomic sequencing, and proactive engagement with policymakers. Challenges faced, including the shortage of trained staff and reliance on imported reagents, emphasize the ongoing need for building research capacity
Unique Cryptosporidium Population in HIV-Infected Persons, Jamaica
A cryptosporidiosis survey showed the presence of Cryptosporidium hominis, C. parvum, C. canis, and C. felis in 25, 7, 1, and 1 HIV-positive persons from Jamaica, respectively; 1 person had both C. hominis and C. felis. Multilocus sequence typing indicated the presence of a homogeneous but geographically distinct C. hominis population in Jamaica
Plasmodium malariae in Haitian Refugees, Jamaica
Since 1963, reported malaria transmission in Haiti has been restricted to Plasmodium falciparum. However, screening of Haitian refugees in Jamaica in 2004, by microscopic examination, identified P. falciparum, P. vivax, and P. malariae. PCR confirmed the P. malariae and P. falciparum but not P. vivax infections. DNA sequencing and rRNA gene sequences showed transmission of P. malariae. This report confirms that P. malariae is still being transmitted in Haiti
Immunogenicity and efficacy of oral vaccines in developing countries: lessons from a live cholera vaccine
Oral vaccines, whether living or non-living, viral or bacterial, elicit diminished immune responses or have lower efficacy in developing countries than in developed countries. Here I describe studies with a live oral cholera vaccine that include older children no longer deriving immune support from breast milk or maternal antibodies and that identify some of the factors accounting for the lower immunogenicity, as well as suggesting counter-measures that may enhance the effectiveness of oral immunization in developing countries. The fundamental breakthrough is likely to require reversing effects of the 'environmental enteropathy' that is often present in children living in fecally contaminated, impoverished environments
Trophic Ecology of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus) Larvae from the Gulf of Mexico and NW Mediterranean Spawning Grounds: A Comparative Stable Isotope Study
The present study uses stable isotopes of nitrogen and carbon (δ15Nandδ13C) as trophic indicators for Atlantic bluefin tuna larvae (BFT) (6–10mm standard length) in the highly contrasting environmental conditions of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) and the Balearic Sea (MED). These regions are differentiated by their temperature regime and relative productivity, with the GOM being significantly warmer and more productive. MED BFT larvae showed the highest δ15N signatures, implying an elevated trophic position above the underlyingmicrozooplankton baseline. Ontogenetic dietary shifts were observed in the BFT larvae from the GOM and MED which indicates early life trophodynamics differences between these spawning habitats. Significant trophic differences between the GOM and MED larvae were observed in relation to δ15N signatures in favour of the MED larvae, which may have important implications in their growth during their early life stages. These low δ15N levels in the zooplankton from the GOM may be an indication of a shifting isotopic baseline in pelagic food webs due to diatrophic inputs by cyanobacteria. Lack of enrichment for δ15N in BFT larvae compared to zooplankton implies an alternative grazing pathway from the traditional food chain of phytoplankton— zooplankton—larval fish. MedShapeNet -- A Large-Scale Dataset of 3D Medical Shapes for Computer Vision
Prior to the deep learning era, shape was commonly used to describe the
objects. Nowadays, state-of-the-art (SOTA) algorithms in medical imaging are
predominantly diverging from computer vision, where voxel grids, meshes, point
clouds, and implicit surface models are used. This is seen from numerous
shape-related publications in premier vision conferences as well as the growing
popularity of ShapeNet (about 51,300 models) and Princeton ModelNet (127,915
models). For the medical domain, we present a large collection of anatomical
shapes (e.g., bones, organs, vessels) and 3D models of surgical instrument,
called MedShapeNet, created to facilitate the translation of data-driven vision
algorithms to medical applications and to adapt SOTA vision algorithms to
medical problems. As a unique feature, we directly model the majority of shapes
on the imaging data of real patients. As of today, MedShapeNet includes 23
dataset with more than 100,000 shapes that are paired with annotations (ground
truth). Our data is freely accessible via a web interface and a Python
application programming interface (API) and can be used for discriminative,
reconstructive, and variational benchmarks as well as various applications in
virtual, augmented, or mixed reality, and 3D printing. Exemplary, we present
use cases in the fields of classification of brain tumors, facial and skull
reconstructions, multi-class anatomy completion, education, and 3D printing. In
future, we will extend the data and improve the interfaces. The project pages
