Have you ever bumped into a sparse and uninteresting planting? If so, you might have seen plants that are not suitable for the location and not combined in an attractive way. During our education as landscape engineers, we have frequently been made aware of unsustainable plantings with unoptimized plants that are not adapted to the given location. Various lecturers from the green sector have shown examples of this related to public areas. In some cases, shaded plantings with dry soil have been discussed because of their common occurrence in the cities. Designing sustainable and long-lasting plantings that have a long value of attraction and are aesthetically beautiful is important both for the eye and the environment. Sustainable plantings containing perennials which are customized for the local conditions tend to not need major maintenance, regarding watering and future nutrient application. By visiting a set of shaded places with dry soil and a major literature study we have answered the following questions: Which perennials are sustainable and long-lasting for dry soil and shade? How can perennials that are customized for dry soil and shade be combined in an aesthetical way? The result of this work contains two design suggestions with associated plant lists with plants customized for dry soil and shade. Hopefully, these suggestions, can be of help and an inspiration for professionals engaged in the green sector

Abstract According to Swedish legislation, a cattle farmer who owns more than 20 cattle and wishes to build, rebuild or add to already existing housing facilities will need to apply for an approval from the Swedish authority County administrative board (CAB) before the building can commence. Assuming that the application is entirely complete and will not require additional information the CAB has eight weeks to consider whether to approve the application or not. Until the application has been approved by the CAB the farmer cannot start building the housing facilities. The main purpose of this application is to ensure that the Swedish animal welfare legislation is enforced. An application that is not in agreement with this legislation will either be rejected or demands will be set in order for the application to be approved. The following study investigates in what way the need for additional information concerning the application for the approval of Swedish cattle housing facilities affects the time spent by the CAB to consider the case. It also investigates the context of this additional information. Furthermore, it is suggested in what way the application form labelled D173B can be improved. The study showed that of the 77 investigated applications additional information had been requested in 83 percent of the cases. The average application needed additional information 1.5 times and at most 6 times in total. The most commonly requested additional information was related to part D of the letter of application labelled D173B which refers to enclosed attachments such as plans. Above all, measurements were lacking in the attachments and secondly stable fittings. It took a median of 3 days counting from when the case was complete for the CAB to approve an application. Only two cases were not approved in time. Lastly, it took 18 days longer for the CAB to approve applications which required additional information than those that required none. In conclusion, the approval of Swedish cattle housing facilities can play an important role in ensuring that the basic welfare requirements for cattle are met. However, the process of approval could benefit from reducing the amount of required additional information and this could probably be accomplished by simplifying the letter of application labelled D173B as well as making the way the CAB communicate with the applicant more effective

The Walking Gender : - en semiotisk analys av genusrepresentationen i TV-serien The Walking Dead

Abstract Titel: The Walking Gender Författare: Moa Linder Bakgrund: Den populĂ€ra amerikanska TV-serien The Walking Dead Ă€r en zombiefiktion som  inbjuder mĂ€nniskor vĂ€rlden över att följa seriens protagonister kĂ€mpandes mot zombies och mĂ€nskliga grupperingar i ett oroligt postapokalyptiskt USA.

Background: Nurses experience that a good work environment creates opportunities to have a good communication with patients. A stressful work environment on the emergency department may instead lead to a deficient communication. Relatives experience that the communication with nurses may be inadequate and that the information about their close relative is missing. Method: General literature review based on Friberg (2017a), ten health science articles were analyzed, seven qualitative, two mixed methods and one quantitative. Aim: The purpose was to describe patients experience of nurses’ communication in connection with care in an emergency department. Results: Three themes emerged; language barriers, the importance of integrity in communication and the importance of participation in communication. During the first theme, language barriers, it appeared that the patients experienced that the nurses use of medical terminology made the communication more difficult. The importance of integrity in communication identified that the patient experienced a breach of privacy when nurses spoke loudly about their condition so that other patients and health care personal could hear. The importance of participation in communication means that patients experienced that they could be participating in their own care through the nurse’s communication. Conclusion: Patients experienced that language barriers made the communication with nurses more difficult, that there was an importance of integrity and participation in communication with nurses.

Towards understanding learning challenges involving sign conventions in introductory level kinematics

Coming to appropriately appreciate the meaning of algebraic signs is an important aspect in introductory kinematics. However, in this educational context, the “disciplinary relevant aspects” of algebraic signs across vector and scalar representations are extremely difficult to discern. Our study explores the “relevance structure” that one-dimensional kinematics problems evoked for introductory level university physics students across two very different educational systems which have, in PER terms, progressive teaching environments: Sweden (n=60) and South Africa (n=24). The outcomes of two previous PER studies are used to provide the analytic basis for formulating categories of relevance structure. Aspects of a contemporary PER-developed social semiotics perspective (referred to here in terms of communication practices) are used to discuss implications for teaching in the given educational context of introductory kinematics

Round and round in circles-shifting relevance structures as students discuss acceleration and forces during circular motion in a vertical plane

    No full text
Working out the relations between the forces involved in circular motion in a vertical plane can be challenging for first-year students, as illustrated in this analysis of a 30 min group discussion of a textbook problem where a remote-control model car moves with constant speed inside a cylinder. The analysis includes timelines of semiotic resources used, as well as of topics brought up by individual students. Questions from the students include: what is that force you drew on the paper? Does it act on the car or on the wall? What keeps the car from falling down? The normal force and the 'centripetal force' both point to the center-does it mean they are the same? Is it only a gravitational force at the top? Does the normal force at the bottom just cancel gravity or does it need to be larger? What is 'normal' about the normal force? Arriving at the correct numerical result is insufficient evidence for student understanding of forces in circular motion! Can students with fragmentary understanding bring their pieces together to solve the puzzle? From the timelines, we can identify a few critical moments where the discussion changes focus. This happens when one of the students in the group introduces a new dimension of variation, e.g. a reminder about the force of gravity, a free-body diagram drawn, as well as diagrams drawn in other parts of the circle than the top or bottom, where the centripetal and normal forces are no longer in the same direction. Embodied experiences are invoked, but only at a very late stage in the discussion. For teachers, an awareness of the different ways students use terms and think about the forces can be a guide to offering a larger variation in the interventions, as well as in problems assigned
