    Get PDF
This study was undertaken to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and behaviour on the environment among 650 undergraduates. The representative samples were selected through a two-stage sampling method. The validated questionnaires developed by the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) process and expert opinions were utilized in this study. The pre-testing of the questionnaire was carried out among 50 undergraduates. Explanatory Factor Analysis revealed three components existed in the questionnaire, namely knowledge, attitude and behavior. Each Component shows good reliability, awareness component (8 questions—Cronbach Alpha0.72), attitude (9 questions—Cronbach Alpha-0.78) and behavior (8 questions, Cronbach Alpha 0.70). This study revealed the level of environmental knowledge and attitudes among students was high 4:15(sd0.42) and 4:19(sd0.49), however, they score moderately on behavior component (3.20(sd0.46). There are no significant difference in awareness, attitude and behaviour between gender, However, different age groups differed significantly (4.24 vs. 4.14, p = 0.013). Meanwhile, the awareness score was also significantly different between undergraduates from different programs (4.11 vs. 4.20, p = 0.005). Multivariable Linear Regression indicates the positive association between high knowledge and attitudes with pro-environmental behavior

OBJECTIVES: To identify variables predicting inter fractional anatomical variationsmeasured with cone-beam CT (CBCT) throughout abdominal paediatric radiotherapy, and to assess the potential of surface-guided radiotherapy (SGRT) to monitor these changes. METHODS: Metrics of variation in gastrointestinal (GI) gas volume andseparation of the body contour and abdominal wallwere calculated from 21 planning CTs and 77 weekly CBCTs for 21 abdominal neuroblastoma patients (median 4y, range: 2 -19y). Age, sex, feeding tubes, and general anaesthesia (GA) were explored as predictive variables for anatomical variation. Furthermore,GI gas variationwas correlated with changes in body and abdominal wall separation, as well as simulated SGRT metrics of translational and rotationalcorrections between CT/CBCT. RESULTS: GI gas volumes varied 74 ± 54 ml across all scans, while body and abdominal wall separationvaried 2.0 ± 0.7 mm and4.1±1.5mmfrom planning, respectively. Patients < 3.5y (p = 0.04) and treated under GA (p < 0.01) experienced greater GI gas variation; GA was the strongest predictor in multivariate analysis (p < 0.01). Absence of feeding tubes was linked to greater body contour variation (p = 0.03). GI gas variation correlated with body (R = 0.53) and abdominal wall (R = 0.63) changes. The strongest correlations with SGRT metrics were found for anteroposterior translation (R = 0.65) androtation of the left-right axis (R = -0.36). CONCLUSIONS: Young age, GA, and absence of feeding tubes were linked to stronger inter fractional anatomical variation and are likely indicative of patients benefiting from adaptive/robust planning pathways. Our data suggests a role for SGRT toinformthe need for CBCT at each treatment fractionin this patient group. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: This is the first study to suggest the potential role of SGRT for the management of internal inter fractional anatomical variation in paediatric abdominal radiotherapy

Seroprevalence of Nipah Virus Infection in Peninsular Malaysia

Nipah virus (NiV) outbreak occurred in Malaysia in 1998. The natural host reservoir for NiV is Pteropus bats, which are commonly found throughout Malaysia. Humans become infected when NiV spills over from the reservoir species. In this study, NiV serosurveillance in Peninsular Malaysia, particularly among the indigenous population, was performed. The collected samples were tested for presence of NiV antibodies using a comparative indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay based on the recombinant NiV nucleocapsid (rNiV-N) protein. We found that 10.73% of the participants recruited in this study had antibodies against rNiV-N, suggesting possible exposure to NiV

A Systematic Review of Weight Perception in Virtual Reality: Techniques, Challenges, and Road Ahead

Weight is perceived through the combination of multiple sensory systems, and a wide range of factors – including touch, visual, and force senses – can influence the perception of heaviness. There have been remarkable advancements in the development of haptic interfaces throughout the years. However, a number of challenges limit the progression to enable humans to sense the weight in virtual reality (VR). This article presents an overview of the factors that influence how weight is perceived and the phenomenon that contributes to various types of weight illusions. A systematic review has been undertaken to assess the development of weight perception in VR, underlying haptic technology that renders the mass of a virtual object, and the creation of weight perception through pseudo-haptic. We summarize the approaches from the perspective of haptic and pseudo-haptic cues that exhibit the sense of weight such as force, skin deformation, vibration, inertia, control–display ratio, velocity, body gestures, and audio–visual representation. The design challenges are underlined, and research gaps are discussed, including accuracy and precision, weight discrimination, heavyweight rendering, and absolute weight simulation. This article is anticipated to aid in the development of more realistic weight perception in VR and stimulated new research interest in this topic

COVID-19, Suffering and Palliative Care: A Review

    Get PDF
According to the WHO guideline, palliative care is an integral component of COVID-19 management. The relief of physical symptoms and the provision of psychosocial support should be practiced by all healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients. In this review, we aim to provide a simple outline on COVID-19, suffering in COVID-19, and the role of palliative care in COVID-19. We also introduce 3 principles of palliative care that can serve as a guide for all healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients, which are (1) good symptom control, (2) open and sensitive communication, and (3) caring for the whole team. The pandemic has brought immense suffering, fear and death to people everywhere. The knowledge, skills and experiences from palliative care could be used to relieve the suffering of COVID-19 patients

PURPOSE: To investigate the incidence and risk of stroke after percutaneous vertebroplasty in patients with osteoporosis. METHODS: A group of 334 patients with osteoporosis, and who underwent percutaneous vertebroplasty during the study period, was compared to 1,655 age-, sex- and propensity score-matched patients who did not undergo vertebroplasty. All demographic covariates and co-morbidities were deliberately matched between the two groups to avoid selection bias. Every subject was followed-up for up to five years for stroke. Adjustments using a Cox regression model and Kaplan-Meier analyses were conducted. RESULTS: A total of 1,989 osteoporotic patients were followed up for 3,760.13 person-years. Overall, the incidence rates of any stroke, hemorrhagic stroke and ischemic stroke were 22.6, 4.2 and 19.6 per 1,000 person-years, respectively. Patients who underwent vertebroplasty were not more likely to have any stroke (crude hazard ratio = 1.13, p = 0.693), hemorrhagic stroke (HR = 2.21, p = 0.170), or ischemic stroke (HR = 0.96, p = 0.90). After adjusting for demographics, co-morbidities and medications, the vertebroplasty group had no significant difference with the comparison group in terms of any, hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes (adjusted HR = 1.22, 3.17, and 0.96, p = 0.518, 0.055, and 0.91, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Osteoporotic patients who undergo percutaneous vertebroplasty are not at higher risk of any stroke in the next five years after the procedure

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Interleukin 6 (IL-6) has been related to beta-amyloid aggregation and the appearance of hyperphosphorylated tau in Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain. However, previous studies relating <it>IL-6 </it>genetic polymorphisms to AD included few and unrepresentative single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and the results were inconsistent.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This is a case-control study. A total of 266 patients with AD, aged≧65, were recruited from three hospitals in Taiwan (2007-2010). Controls (n = 444) were recruited from routine health checkups and volunteers of the hospital during the same period of time. Three common <it>IL-6 </it>haplotype-tagging SNPs were selected to assess the association between <it>IL-6 </it>polymorphisms and the risk of late-onset AD (LOAD).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Variant carriers of <it>IL-6 </it>rs1800796 and rs1524107 were significantly associated with a reduced risk of LOAD [(GG + GC vs. CC): adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 0.64 and (CC + CT vs. TT): AOR = 0.60, respectively]. Haplotype CAT was associated with a decreased risk of LOAD (0 and 1 copy vs. 2 copies: AOR = 0.65, 95% CI = 0.44-0.95). These associations remained significant in <it>ApoE e4 </it>non-carriers only. Hypertension significantly modified the association between rs2069837 polymorphisms and the risk of LOAD (<it>p</it>interaction = 0.03).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p><it>IL-6 </it>polymorphisms are associated with reduced risk of LOAD, especially in <it>ApoE e4 </it>non-carriers. This study identified genetic markers for predicting LOAD in <it>ApoE e4 </it>non-carriers.</p
