Setting Goals for Brook Restoration : Case Study Brook Kumianoja in Hämeenkoski
Joulukuussa 2018 julkaistussa valtakunnallisessa luontotyyppien uhanalaisuuden arvioinnissa Suomen purojen tila arvioitiin koko maan tasolla heikoksi. Huonoin tilanne on savimaiden uomilla, jotka sijaitsevat pitkään maatalouskäytössä olleilla alueilla ja kärsivät suuresta ravinnekuormituksesta. Kunnostustarpeessa olevien purovesistöjä on kymmeniätuhansia kilometrejä.
Suunnitelmallisessa tavoitteiden asettelussa seuranta rakennetaan osaksi suunnittelua.
Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin voiko suunnitelmallinen tavoitteiden asettelu tarjota ratkaisuja purojen tilan parantamisen haasteisiin Suomessa. Tutkimuksessa testattiin tavoitekuvatarkastelun ja SMART-laatukriteerien toimivuutta kunnostussuunnittelussa. Tutkimus käsittelee puroja yleisesti, mutta esimerkkikohteen kautta keskittyy maatalousalueen purovesistön kunnostamiseen. Tutkimuksessa kuvataan Suomen ensimmäinen, laajamittainen maatalousalueen puron kunnostaminen, jossa Hämeenkoskella sijaitseva Kumianoja palautettiin noin kilometrin matkalta virtaamaan alkuperäiseen, mutkittelevaan linjaukseensa.
Tutkimus osoittaa, että purolaakson luontoarvojen palauttaminen on mahdollista maatalouskäytössä olevalla alueella. Suunnitelmallinen tavoitteiden asettelu toi hankkeeseen laaja-alaisuutta ja auttoi hahmottamaan luontoarvojen palauttamisen realistiset mahdollisuudet jo hankkeen alkuvaiheessa. Eri näkökulmien huomioon ottaminen ja valuma-alueen ja uomajatkumon tarkastelun sisällyttäminen kunnostuksen suunnitteluun edesauttoi toivotun lopputuloksen saavuttamista. Osana tutkimusta luotiin suunnitelmallisen tavoitteenasettelun toimintamalli, jota voidaan hyödyntää virtavesikunnostuksien suunnittelussa valtakunnallisesti.
Tutkimus oli osa Suomen ympäristökeskuksen ”Kuivatustoiminnassa muuttuneiden virtavesien kunnostus ja hoito (KURVI)” -hanketta (2016-2018), jota rahoitti ympäristöministeriö. Hankkeen päämääränä oli kehittää menetelmiä maatalouden kuivatustoiminnan heikentämien virtavesien tilan parantamiseksi vuonna 2015 julkaistun kansallisen pienvesien suojelu- ja kunnostusstrategian ja vuonna 2011 uudistuneen vesilain tavoitteiden mukaisesti. In a national assessment of threatened habitat types published in December 2018, the state of brooks in Finland was evaluated poor throughout the country. The situation is the worst in the channels of clay rich areas that have a long history of agriculture and are suffering from excessive nutrient loads. The developmental direction of all flowing water habitat types is negative compared to the assessment given in 2008.
Currently there are tens of thousands of kilometers of brooks in the need of restoration. The problem with the already accomplished restorations is that they are limited only to specific and short parts of the channels. Because the restorations usually do not include monitoring, the data available of the effects of the restorations is limited. The problem is global, which has led to only small development in the restoration methods in the past decades.
In order to improve the condition of brooks in Finland, there is a need for new planning methods focusing on the drainage basins and the importance of monitoring. Methods developed in Central Europe and North America focus in considering the restoration area and its drainage basin as one unit, mapping of the original characteristics of the ecosystem and specifying the goals of restoration. In the presence of specific goals, the monitoring will become an integral part of the restoration plan.
This study investigated the effect of setting specific goals for the restoration, and whether it could offer solutions in improving the situation of brooks in Finland. This study applies to brooks in general, but through the restoration example used, focuses especially in the restoration of channels in agricultural areas. This study describes the first extensive restoration of agricultural brook completed in Finland. Kumianoja, located in Hämeenkoski, was restored to flow in its original meandering shape of the channel in the length of approximately one kilometer. With the documentation of this restoration, this study creates an overview of brook restoration planning and the different stages of its execution.
The study was part of the “Sustainable management and restoration of dredged agricultural streams (KURVI)”-project (2016-2018) of the Finnish Environment Institute that was funded by the Ministry of the Environment. The goal of the project was to develop methods for improving the state of the flowing waters damaged by the agricultural land drainage according to the Strategy for Protection and Restoration of Small Water Bodies published in 2015 and the goals of the Water act renewed in 2011
Tutkimus on määrällinen kuvaileva tapaustutkimus.
7–11-vuotiaat lapset antoivat leikkaukseen valmisteluyksikölle (asteikolla 4–10) arvosanaksi 8 (kh 1,8).
Muutoksessa henkilökunnan huomiointi voimavarana on tärkeää, jotta turvataan laadukas hoitotyö.Siirretty Doriast
Seeing red? Colour biases of foraging birds are context dependent
Colours are commonly used as visual cues when measuring animals' cognitive abilities. However, animals can have innate biases towards certain colours that depend on ecological and evolutionary contexts, therefore potentially influencing their performance in experiments. For example, when foraging, the colour red can advertise profitable fruits or act as a warning signal about chemically defended prey, and an individual's propensity to take food of that colour may depend on experience, age or physical condition. Here, we investigate how these contexts influence blue tits' (Cyanistes caeruleus) and great tits' (Parus major) responses to red-coloured almond flakes. We found that juvenile birds preferred red both when it was presented simultaneously with green, and when it was presented with three alternative colours (orange, purple, green). Adult birds, however, only preferred red after a positive experience with the colour, or when it was presented with the three alternative colours. We then tested whether colour influenced avoidance learning about food unpalatability. Despite the prediction that red is a more salient warning signal than green, we found only weak evidence that birds discriminated red unpalatable almonds from a green palatable alternative more quickly than when the colours were reversed. Our results suggest that biases towards red food may depend on birds' age and previous experience, and this might influence their performance in experiments that use red stimuli. Considering the ecological relevance of colours is, therefore, important when designing experiments that involve colour cues.Peer reviewe

Predators vs. Prey: The information ecology of warning signals
Explaining the origin and maintenance of aposematism has remained a challenge for evolutionary biologists because conspicuous warning signals are predicted to have a high initial predation cost before predators learn to avoid them. Most previous work has assumed that predators need to sample prey individually (personal information) to learn about these defences, however recent research suggests that observing predation events of others (social information) may also shape selection for prey defences and help resolve this puzzle. Here I use great tits and blue tits as model predators to investigate what influences predators’ decisions to use different types of information when encountering novel prey, how information use varies across predator species, and whether this can operate in a predator community in the wild. First, I investigated if previous experience with toxins increases great tits’ reliance on social information about novel aposematic prey, but found that toxin load had no effect: socially-educated birds consumed fewer aposematic prey, regardless. This indicates that social information can reduce predation pressure on novel aposematic prey even when a predator’s risk of increasing their toxin load is low. Social interactions among predators might, however, also increase predation on aposematic prey if predators gather social information about the presence of palatable mimics. Therefore, I next investigated if educated great tits became more likely to consume mimics after observing warning signals being palatable but found that the birds were hesitant to sample palatable mimics, regardless of social information. These results suggest that while social information about models is potent in increasing predator avoidance, model-mimic dynamics are unlikely to be affected when predators have recent personal experience of the model’s unpalatability. Because predator communities are often complex and consist of multiple species, I next extended my work to blue tits that typically form mixed-species flocks with great tits. I first tested whether video playback is a suitable method for providing social information for blue tits. I then investigated conspecific and heterospecific information use in blue tits and great tits, and found that both species used social information about aposematic prey, including information from heterospecifics. Finally, I tested the ecological relevance of my results with a field experiment where blue tits and great tits were presented with novel palatable and unpalatable food. I conducted the experiment in the summer when naïve juveniles are abundant and aposematic prey suffer high predation. Consistent with my work with birds in captivity, I found that both species used social information in their food choices also in the wild. Together, my findings demonstrate that social transmission of knowledge about prey defences shapes predator-prey communities, and an information ecology approach can therefore help us to understand the evolution and maintenance of prey warning signals. The Finnish Cultural Foundation

Social information use by predators : expanding the information ecology of prey defences
Social information use is well documented across the animal kingdom, but how it influences ecological and evolutionary processes is only just beginning to be investigated. Here we evaluate how social transmission may influence species interactions and potentially change or create novel selection pressures by focusing on predator-prey interactions, one of the best studied examples of species coevolution. There is extensive research into how prey can use social information to avoid predators, but little synthesis of how social transmission among predators can influence the outcome of different stages of predation. Here we review evidence that predators use social information during 1) encounter, 2) detection, 3) identification, 4) approach, 5) subjugation and 6) consumption. We use this predation sequence framework to evaluate the implications of social information use on current theoretical predictions about predator-prey dynamics, and find that social transmission has the potential to alter selection pressures for prey defences at each predation stage. This suggests that considering social interactions can help answer open questions about species coevolution, and also predict how populations and communities respond to rapid human-induced changes in the environment.Peer reviewe
Kaupunkipuron kunnostaminen
Tavoiteltaessa vesien hyvää ekologista tilaa valuma-alueiden maankäytön ja pienvesien merkitys korostuu. Valuma-alueelta tuleva, rehevöittävä ravinnekuormitus kulkeutuu isompiin vesistöihin purojen, valtaojien ja norojen kautta. Pienet virtavedet tarjoavat ainutlaatuisia elinympäristöjä monille eliölajeille.
Tarve purojen laajamittaiselle kunnostamiselle tunnustetaan, ja purojen suuri merkitys kaupunkiluonnon monimuotoisuudelle on tullut tutkimuksissa selkeästi esille. Samalla purojen arvostus on noussut, kun yleinen tietoisuus puroista on kasvanut ja niiden kunnostamisen hyödyt ymmärretty.
Kaupunkialueilla valuma-alueen merkitys kuormituksessa korostuu.
Designing Classroom Practices for Teaching Online Inquiry: Experiences from the Field
Students face several challenges when asked to locate relevant and credible information from the internet. This article introduces three principles for designing online inquiry lessons and documents what we learned from five language arts teachers from Finland who implemented and provided feedback on a learning unit framed in those design principles. Teachers implemented a researcher-designed online inquiry unit in nine upper secondary school classrooms. The unit included four 75-minute lessons sequenced to support the location, evaluation, and synthesis of information students encountered in an online inquiry task. Teachers’ diaries revealed their impressions of the unit, problems encountered, and exceptions made to the designed plan. Follow-up interviews revealed additional insights about appropriate time allocation, clear instruction, and areas where students benefit from explicit guidance in strategy use. Findings suggest a researcher-teacher collaboration can be a fruitful endeavor to assist in advancing the design of productive online inquiry activities.
Increasingly, students turn to the internet to seek information to address a problem or complete a learning task. These forms of online inquiry require students to locate relevant and credible information from multiple online resources and build a coherent representation of the explored issue (Leu et al., 2019). Although online inquiry is a common practice, students’ competencies are often under-developed (Brand-Gruwel & van Strien, 2018), resulting in uncritical engagement with online information. Furthermore, many teachers find it challenging to embed instruction of these competencies into their curriculum (Derakhshan & Singh, 2011).
To address these issues, we developed a learning unit designed to intentionally translate relevant theories and design principles into effective classroom practices for teaching online inquiry. Five language arts teachers from Finland collaborated with us to provide initial feedback on the unit; after revisions, they agreed to implement the lessons in nine upper secondary classrooms and reflect on their teaching experiences. In this paper, we describe the theoretical and pedagogical underpinnings of our unit’s design and how it was implemented in classrooms. Then, we share teachers’ reflections about the unit, including ideas for improvements

The effect of social information from live demonstrators compared to video playback on blue tit foraging decisions
Video playback provides a promising method to study social interactions, and the number of video playback experiments has been growing in recent years. Using videos has advantages over live individuals as it increases the repeatability of demonstrations, and enables researchers to manipulate the features of the presented stimulus. How observers respond to video playback might, however, differ among species, and the efficacy of video playback should be validated by investigating if individuals' responses to videos are comparable to their responses to live demonstrators. Here, we use a novel foraging task to compare blue tits' (Cyanistes caeruleus) responses to social information from a live conspecific vs video playback. Birds first received social information about the location of food, and were then presented with a three-choice foraging task where they could search for food from locations marked with different symbols (cross, square, plain white). Two control groups saw only a foraging tray with similar symbols but no information about the location of food. We predicted that socially educated birds would prefer the same location where a demonstrator had foraged, but we found no evidence that birds copied a demonstrator's choice, regardless of how social information was presented. Social information, however, had an influence on blue tits' foraging choices, as socially educated birds seemed to form a stronger preference for a square symbol (against two other options, cross and plain white) than the control birds. Our results suggest that blue tits respond to video playback of a conspecific similarly as to a live bird, but how they use this social information in their foraging decisions, remains unclear.Peer reviewe
Tämän oppaan tarkoituksena on selventää pienvesiä koskevan lainsäädännön tulkitsemista. Opas on osa ympäristöministeriön ja maa- ja metsätalousministeriön vuonna 2015 julkaiseman pienvesien suojelu- ja kunnostusstrategian täytäntöönpanoa. Oppaassa esitellään keskeinen pienvesiin liittyvä lainsäädäntö ja annetaan ohjeita pienvesien tunnistamiseen. Oppaaseen on koottu yleisimpiä pienvesiin kohdistuvia toimenpiteitä ja tarkasteltu niiden luvanvaraisuutta. Lisäksi oppaaseen on sisällytetty suosituksia pienvesien paremmaksi huomioimiseksi maankäytössä
