    Determination of radiogenic and stable strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr; δ88/86Sr) by thermal ionization mass spectrometry applying an 87Sr/84Sr double spike

    Recent findings of natural strontium isotope fractionation have opened up a new field of research in non-traditional stable isotope geochemistry. While previous studies were based on data obtained by MC-ICP-MS we here present a novel approach combining thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) with the use of an 87Sr/84Sr double spike (DS). Our results for the IAPSO sea water and JCp-1 coral standards, respectively, are in accord with previously published data. The strontium isotope composition of the IAPSO sea water standard was determined as δ88/86Sr = 0.386(5)‰ (δ values relative to the SRM987), 87Sr/86Sr* = 0.709312(9) n = 10 and a corresponding conventionally normalized 87Sr/86Sr = 0.709168(7) (all uncertainties 2SEM). For the JCp-1 coral standard we obtained δ88/86Sr = 0.197(8)‰, 87Sr/86Sr* = 0.709237(2) and 87Sr/86Sr = 0.709164(5) n = 3. We show that by applying this DS-TIMS method the precision is improved by at least a factor of 2–3 when compared to MC-ICP-MS

    High-sensitivity cardiac troponin T and copeptin assays to improve diagnostic accuracy of exercise stress test in patients with suspected coronary artery disease

    Background: The average diagnostic sensitivity of exercise stress tests (ESTs) is lower than that of other non-invasive cardiac stress tests. The aim of the study was to examine whether high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) or copeptin concentrations rise in response to inducible myocardial ischaemia and may improve the diagnostic accuracy of ESTs. Methods and results: An EST was performed stepwise on a bicycle ergometer by 383 consecutive patients with suspected or progression of coronary artery disease (CAD). In addition venous blood samples for measurement of hs-cTnT and copeptin were collected prior to EST, at peak exercise, and 4 h after EST. Coronary angiography was assessed for all patients. Patients with significant CAD (n=224) were more likely to be male and older compared to patients with non-significant CAD (n=169). Positive EST was documented in 125 (55.8%) patients with significant CAD and in 69 (43.4%) patients with non-significant CAD. Copeptin and hs-cTnT concentrations at baseline were higher in patients with significant CAD (copeptin: 10.8 pmol/l (interquartile range (IQR) 8.1–15.6) vs 9.4 pmol/l (IQR 7.1–13.9); p=0.04; hs-cTnT: 3.0 ng/l (IQR <3.0–5.4) vs <3.0 ng/l (IQR <3.0); p=0.006). Hs-cTnT improved sensitivity (61.6% vs 55.8%), specificity (67.7% vs 56.6%) and the positive predictive value (PPV) (72.3% vs 64.4%) and negative (55.2% vs 47.6%) predictive value (NPV) of EST. Copeptin could not improve sensitivity (55.4% vs 55.8%) and reduced specificity, PPV and NPV. Conclusions: The measurement of hs-cTnT during EST improves sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values. In contrast, measurement of copeptin does not improve diagnostic sensitivity and reduces specificity

    Biogas production from sugarcane waste: assessment on kinetic challenges for process designing

    Biogas production from sugarcane waste has large potential for energy generation, however, to enable the optimization of the anaerobic digestion (AD) process each substrate characteristic should be carefully evaluated. In this study, the kinetic challenges for biogas production from different types of sugarcane waste were assessed. Samples of vinasse, filter cake, bagasse, and straw were analyzed in terms of total and volatile solids, chemical oxygen demand, macronutrients, trace elements, and nutritional value. Biochemical methane potential assays were performed to evaluate the energy potential of the substrates according to different types of sugarcane plants. Methane yields varied considerably (5–181 Nm3·tonFM−1), mainly due to the different substrate characteristics and sugar and/or ethanol production processes. Therefore, for the optimization of AD on a large-scale, continuous stirred-tank reactor with long hydraulic retention times (>35 days) should be used for biogas production from bagasse and straw, coupled with pre-treatment process to enhance the degradation of the fibrous carbohydrates. Biomass immobilization systems are recommended in case vinasse is used as substrate, due to its low solid content, while filter cake could complement the biogas production from vinasse during the sugarcane offseason, providing a higher utilization of the biogas system during the entire year

    A perspective on the potential role of biogas in smart energy grids

    This report documents the potential role of biogas in smart energy grids. Biogas systems can facilitate increased proportions of variable renewable electricity on the electricity grid through use of two different technologies: • Demand driven biogas systems which increase production of electricity from biogas facilities at times of high demand for electricity, or store biogas temporarily at times of low electricity demand. • Power to gas systems when demand for electricity is less than supply of electricity to the electricity grid, allowing conversion of surplus electricity to gas. The report is aimed at an audience of energy developers, energy policy makers and academics and was produced by IEA Bioenergy Task 37. Task 37 is a part of IEA Bioenergy, which is one of the 42 Implementing Agreements within IEA.     Alternative data reduction for precise and accurate isotope ratio determination via LA-MC-ICP-MS

    An alternative approach for the evaluation of isotope ratio data using LA-MC-ICP-MS will be presented. In contrast to previously applied methods it is based on the simultaneous responses of all analyte isotopes of interest and the relevant interferences without performing a conventional background correction. Significant improvements in precision and accuracy can be achieved when applying this new method and will be discussed based on the results of two first methodical applications: a) radiogenic and stable Sr isotopes in carbonates b) stable chlorine isotopes of pyrohydrolytic extracts. In carbonates an external reproducibility of the 87Sr/86Sr ratios of about 19 ppm (RSD) was achieved, an improvement of about a factor of 5. For recent and sub-recent marine carbonates a mean radiogenic strontium isotope ratio 87Sr/86Sr of 0.709170 ± 0.000007 (2SE) was determined, which agrees well with the value of 0.7091741 ± 0.0000024 (2SE) reported for modern sea water [1]. Stable chlorine isotope ratios were determined ablating pyrohydrolytic extracts with a reproducibility of about 0.05‰ (RSD). For basaltic reference material JB1a and JB2 chlorine isotope ratios were determined relative to SMOC (standard mean ocean chlorinity) δ37ClJB-1a = (-0.99 ± 0.06) ‰ and δ37ClJB-2 = (-0.60 ± 0.03) ‰ (2SE), respectively, in accordance with published data [2]. The described strategies for data reduction are considered to be generally applicable for all isotope ratio measurements using LA-MC-ICP-MS.
