La correspondencia Monner Sans - Costa Álvarez (1920-1927) : La definición de un programa de investigación filológica en Argentina

Entre 1920 y 1927 Ricardo Monner Sans, profesor de gramática retirado del Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires, y Arturo Costa Alvarez, periodista, traductor y lingüista, mantienen una extensa correspondencia sobre una variedad de temas filológicos que comprenden desde etimologías prácticas hasta reflexiones sobre la cuestión del idioma nacional en la Argentina y la enseñanza del castellano en las escuelas. La colaboración mutua de estos intelectuales, que es revelada en esta correspondencia inédita, pone de manifiesto una serie de reflexiones en torno la constitución del saber filológico en Argentina en los años veinte del siglo pasad

Superior shoulder suspensory complex fracture dislocation case report

Background: Acromioclavicular joint dislocation can be more complex than it first appears. The presented case had an unusual combination of injuries to the superior shoulder suspensory complex, which yielded some interesting learning points. Case summary: The injuries were sustained after a fall from a push bike and included acromioclavicular dislocation with coracoid process, clavicle and acromion process fractures. These were identified on the initial X-ray examination, which was followed by computed tomography for surgical planning. The injuries were successfully treated by internal fixation. Conclusion: The unexpected complexity of the injuries could have led to subtle but important findings being overlooked. This case highlights the importance of a thorough search strategy, consideration of injury biomechanics and knowledge of associated injuries

Improving the patient experience through a commit to sit service excellence initiative

Effective communication between nurses and patients positively impacts patient care, outcomes, and the patient experience.While in the hospital, patients receive information from multiple caregivers and are often overwhelmed and confused. Nurses make up the majority of interactions with patients and are in an ideal position to improve the patient experience from the front lines. The purpose of implementing the Commit to Sit service excellence initiative was to positively impact the patient’s perception of nurse communication by nurses sitting with their patients during each shift. Outcomes were measured by the overall nurse communication composite on the Press Ganey survey, as well as the composite components of treating patients with courtesy and respect, listening carefully, and explaining understandably. Patients perceive caregivers as spending more time at the bedside when sitting versus standing. Defending grammar: the language teaching program of Ricardo Monner Sans

Este trabajo pretende contribuir al estudio global de las ideologías lingüísticas que circulan en la prensa especializada argentina durante las primeras décadas del silgo XX. En particular, se propone un análisis de las intervenciones de Ricardo Monner Sans en la prensa especializada, referidas a la cuestión de la enseñanza de la lengua. El corpus, constituido por cuatro artículos publicados en dos revistas culturales: la Revista de Historia, Derecho y Letras y la Revista de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, constituye un insumo imprescindible para examinar la conformación de un modelo de enseñanza de la lengua que pretende sintetizar la tradición gramatical escolar con un objetivo pedagógico concreto: la estigmatización de los usos lingüísticos que se apartan de la norma culta. A partir del análisis de estos artículos se busca deslindar la concepción ideológica lingüística que subyace al modelo de enseñanza de la lengua que propone el autor, su contraste con el enfoque asumido oficialmente tras la reforma educativa de 1905 y su vinculación con el discurso nacionalista pro hispánico que emerge en la Argentina hacia fines del XIX y comienzos del XX.This paper aims to contribute to the global study of the linguistic ideologies circulating in Argentinean specialized press during the first decades of the XX century. In particular, it is proposed an analysis of Ricardo Monner Sans’s interventions in the specialized press referring to language teaching. The corpus consists of four articles published in two cultural journals: Revista de Historia, Derecho y Letras and Revista de la Universidad de Buenos Aires. It constitutes an essential input to examine the formation of a language-teaching model that aims to synthesize the school grammatical tradition with a specific pedagogical objective: the stigmatization of linguistic uses that deviate from the standard. From the analysis of these articles, it is sought to demarcate the ideological linguistic conception that underlies the language teaching model proposed by the author, its contrast with the approach officially assumed after the educational reform of 1905 and its link with a pro-Hispanic nationalist discourse which emerges in Argentina towards the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th.Dossier: La lengua en disputa: los debates en la prensa escrita y una historia de la lengua para el siglo XXIFacultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació

Este trabajo aborda la columna lingüística que Juan B. Selva publica en la revista pedagógica La obra entre 1923 y 1927, con el objetivo de examinar tanto los criterios de autoridad en torno al saber lingüístico, como las valoraciones ideológicas y las actitudes que el autor manifiesta ante los fenómenos lingüísticos que describe. El análisis de la columna, publicada en un contexto en el que se asiste en la Argentina a la institucionalización de la lingüística y a la expansión de los debates sobre la lengua en la prensa, permite corroborar la centralidad que asume la cuestión normativa, rasgo característico del género, pero también la emergencia de un discurso que rechaza la posición prescriptiva y busca, en cambio, explicaciones científicas de los fenómenos lingüísticos que registra.This paper addresses the linguistics column that Juan B. Selva published in the pedagogical journal La Obra between 1923 and 1927, with the aim of examining both the criteria of authority regarding linguistic knowledge, as well as the ideological assessments and attitudes expressed by the author in relation to the linguistic phenomena he describes. School Grammar and Language Policy in Argentina: An Analysis of Gramática de la lengua castellana (1893), by Baldmar Dobranich and Ricardo Monner Sans

En el ámbito de lo que ha sido definido en el marco de la historiografía lingüística como historia de la gramática, durante los últimos años se han publicado diversos trabajos destinados a observar la pertinencia historiográfica de la gramática escolar como espacio de reformulación y divulgación de tradiciones gramaticales. Con el objetivo de intentar contribuir a esta tarea, este trabajo pretende analizar la Gramática de la lengua castellana (1893) de Baldmar Dobranich y Ricardo Monner Sans, atendiendo sobre todo a dos cuestiones: a) cómo se inscriben en esta gramática escolar una serie de tradiciones lingüísticas y corrientes gramaticales españolas; y b) cómo se codifican en ella los complejos entramados políticos y sociales que conlleva la cuestión del idioma nacional en la Argentina hacia principios del siglo XX.In the field of the history of grammar as defined in Linguistic Historiography, several papers have been published analysing the relevance of school grammars as a space for the reformulation and dissemination of grammar traditions. La propiedad de la lengua: norma y uso en la obra de Ricardo Monner Sans / The Property of Language: Norm and Usage in the work of Ricardo Monner Sans

The question of purity in language has been a common topic in the fields of language ideological debates in the Spanish-speaking world. In this paper, we propose an analysis of the various conceptualizations on linguistic correctness in the work of Ricardo Monner Sans in order to elucidate the links between his linguistic theory and his position on language policy. In that sense, we assume that these conceptualizations should be analyzed as a consequence of a more general consideration about linguistic usage and purity. This consideration seeks a regulatory intervention on the linguistic practices of society based on philological knowledge. Thus, the dimension of usage is divided into a common usage which corresponds to the widespread use in community, and correct usage, that which has been legislated by philological knowledge and which is, for this reason, the criteria for linguistic correction on which the ideal of a homogeneous linguistic community is based.La cuestión de la pureza de la lengua ha sido un tópico largamente abordado en el estudio de los debates ideológico-lingüísticos de la hispanofonía. En este trabajo proponemos un análisis de las distintas conceptualizaciones que sobre la corrección lingüística se observan en la obra de Ricardo Monner Sans, a los efectos de dilucidar los vínculos entre su teoría lingüística-gramatical y su posición política sobre la lengua. Postulamos, en ese sentido, que estas conceptualizaciones son tributarias de una consideración más general sobre el uso y la pureza de la lengua que pretende una intervención normativa sobre las prácticas lingüísticas de la sociedad, sustentada en el saber filológico. De esta forma, la dimensión del uso se ve dividida entre un uso corriente que corresponde al uso generalizado de la comunidad y un buen uso, que es el que ha sido legislado por el saber filológico y que se constituye, por este motivo, en el criterio de corrección sobre el que se sustenta el ideal de la comunidad lingüística homogénea

Multi-scale modelling of polymer composite materials at high rates of strain

The overall objective of this thesis was to develop a methodology for predicting the high strain rate properties of macro scale polymer composite materials through micro and meso scale finite element modelling. The focus in this study was on multi-layered multi-material polymer composite laminates consisting of 0/90 and ± 45 layers of either; S2 Glass/Epoxy or Carbon/Epoxy non crimp fabric. A multi-scale finite element modelling methodology was developed at the micro and meso scale for predicting the elastic response, damage initiation, damage evolution and strain rate dependence of macro scale polymer composite materials. The methodology was implemented in the Abaqus finite element package utilising Python scripting for simulation definition and Fortran code for user defined explicit material subroutines. Micro scale unit cells were tested in longitudinal, transverse and shear loading directions over a range of strain rates. The results of the micro scale testing were converted into material properties of the meso scale yarns / tows. Meso scale unit cells were tested in in-plane, through thickness and shear loading directions over of a range of strain rates. The results of the meso scale testing were converted into material properties of macro scale polymer composite materials. The modelling methodology was validated against experimental testing conducted on meso scale samples over a range of strain rates using an electromechanical universal static test machine and an instrumented falling weight drop tower. The contribution to knowledge from this study is the development of a validated modelling methodology for predicting the elastic, damage and strain rate dependent response of polymer composite materials at a micro and meso scale
