Finding My Better Self and the Strength to Dream: The Impact of the Honors Experience

    Get PDF
As part of the National Collegiate Honors Council’s (2022) collection of essays about the value of honors to its graduates (1967–2019), the author reflects on the personal and professional impacts of the honors experience. H onor. It flows throughout the thread of life and shapes a path at every stage. It serves as an inner compass that navigates through growth and identity to find the destination of a better self. My experience as an honors student represents an important part of this journey and established a foundation of intrinsic values that continue to guide me through my professional and personal landscape. Looking inward today, I recognize these values in the mosaic of my belief system and how they became a driving force in my ongoing evolution as an individual. By honoring the values of critical thinking, continuous improvement, self-trust, and maintaining an active voice, my path remains anchored in wonder and discovery as I pursue my continued development

A Critique of Functionalist and Rhetorical Social Movement Theory: A Case Study of China\u27s 1989 Democracy Movement

Current Communication-based social movement theory provides an excellent framework for analyzing social movements at a superficial level, but it neglects to include one important aspect that influences social movements – the culture in which a social movement takes place. The dominant theories used to evaluate social movements are written with a Western, North-American bias and thus are inadequate tools for explaining social movements that occur in other cultures. This work uses a non-Western social movement – China\u27s 1989 Democracy Movement – as a case study to demonstrate the Western bias that Communication-based social movement theory holds, as well as to show the inadequacy of using a Western-based theory to analyze and explain a non-Western culture. Using current social movement theory to analyze China\u27s 1989 Democracy Movement demonstrates the amount of misunderstanding and misinterpretation that can occur if theories that are not culturally sensitive are used to analyze social movements. This thesis proposes that Communication-based social movement theory should either be reformed so that it includes the aspect of culture in its analysis, or it should be used in conjunction with another, more culturally oriented theory in order to prevent misinterpretation and the inaccurate analysis of social movements

Navigating the Athletic Terrain for Transgender Athletes: Identity, Policy, and the Future

Transgender athletes face scrutiny because they do not fit within the traditional and constructed bounds of male and female. The objective of this study was to discover how to provide advocacy to this marginalized population amidst discriminating policies and transphobic environments. The research included a survey of high school coaches from thirty schools throughout Tennessee along with interviews with five transgender athletes from across the United States. All five athletes reported that leaders were the most impactful allies in their lives and can be the main sources of advocacy for transgender athletes. Survey findings showed that not every coach throughout Tennessee will accept transgender athletes but in each region of Tennessee some coaches claimed to support and would resist discriminatory policies. Leaders have the opportunity to pave the way for transgender athletes by providing advocacy and amplifying the voices of transgender athletes

Bleeding Keaney Blue: An Analysis of Sports Fandom and the Supporters of URI Basketball

In the United States, sports are so prevalent on the national, state, and local level that researchers assert they have become a major component of everyday life. In fact, millions of Americans consider themselves sports fans. Studying sports fandom offers an interesting insight into the human condition. This paper begins by looking at sports fans on a psychological level by examining socialization, the process of becoming a sports fan. It also examines the reasons people become fans and the degree to which people identify as a fan. An important psychological aspect when studying sports fans is identity and how a sports team can often become a crucial part of a person. Another interesting concept is pride and how it is often not enough for someone to like a team intrinsically, but they must publicly display their allegiance. Along with this comes a very strong culture of tradition and superstition characteristic of very involved sports fans. Die-hards o en care so deeply about a team that it has a profound effect on aspects of a person’s behavior and emotion. Next, sports fans are examined on a sociological level. Humans instinctually categorize people into groups they can easily understand. For sports fans, this becomes people that support your team and the opposition. Instinct causes us to feel a connection with the group we are a part of, which is one of the reasons why when two strangers see each other wearing the same team apparel, they are no longer strangers; they instantly have something in common. The last perspective used in this study of sports fandom is a physiological one. Fans feel so intensely during games because of hormonal changes like surging adrenaline, but also because their bodies cannot tell the difference between playing a sport themselves or watching their favorite team play it. This accounts for why spectators often become so invested and also why sometimes people cannot help but jump out of their seats. In addition to this theoretical framework of sports fandom, I looked at the members of our own community who support University of Rhode Island Basketball. As captain of the Ramettes Dance Team, I have been deeply involved in the basketball program and witness, first hand, every game how it feels to be a passionate URI basketball fan. I became interested in the crazy sports fanatics that fill the Ryan Center every game and conducted interviews with some of the most dedicated and obsessive Rhody fans to see how deeply their fanship ran. I heard the stories of many, from current students to lifelong season ticket holders. One alumni has barely missed a game in fifty years and one of the dancers described basketball season as “the most wonderful time of the year.” It is clear that not only are these fans a perfect demonstration of the fandom principles studied by professionals, but that they truly bleed Keaney blue

On the relativistic iron line and soft excess in the Seyfert 1 galaxy Markarian 335

We report on a 133 ks XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Markarian 335. The 0.4-12 keV spectrum contains an underlying power law continuum, a soft excess below 2 keV, and a double-peaked iron emission feature in the 6-7 keV range. We investigate the possibility that the double-peaked emission might represent the characteristic signature of the accretion disc. Detailed investigations show that a moderately broad, accretion disc line is most likely present, but that the peaks may be owing to narrower components from more distant material. The peaks at 6.4 and 7 keV can be identified, respectively, with the molecular torus in active galactic nucleus unification schemes, and very highly ionized, optically thin gas filling the torus. The X-ray variability spectra on both long (~100 ks) and short (~1 ks) timescales disfavour the recent suggestion that the soft excess is an artifact of variable, moderately ionized absorption.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
