    Space-time Characteristics and Experimental Analysis of Broadening First-order Sea Clutter in HF Hybrid Sky-surface Wave Radar

    In high frequency (HF) hybrid sky-surface wave radar, the first-order sea clutter broadening is very complex and serious under the influence of ionosphere and bistatic angle, which affects the detection of ship target. This paper analyzes the space-time characteristics based on the HF sky-surface wave experimental system. We first introduce the basic structure, working principle and position principle based on our experimental system. Also analyzed is the influence of ionosphere and bistatic angle on the space-time coupling characteristics of broadening first-order sea clutter and the performance of space-time adaptive processing (STAP). Finally, the results of theoretic analysis are examined with the experimental data. Simulation results show that the results of experiment consist with that of theoretic analysis

    In-plane torsional stiffness in a macro-panel element for practical finite element modelling

    Finite element (FE) analysis produces results, which, in most cases, gain in accuracy, as the size of the FE mesh is reduced. However, this is not necessarily the case when beam and shell element connections induce in-plane torsional effects in the shell. In such situations, shell elements either do not allow for an in-plane torsional stiffness, or, when present, the in-plane torsional stiffness is incorrectly affected by the sizes of the elements. To overcome this problem, we propose a macro- panel element that has fewer degrees of freedom, includes a new model for in-plane torsional stiffness, and produces results with sufficient accuracy to meet engineering requirements. The panel element is based on the principle of sub-structuring, i.e., the panel is meshed internally by smaller shell elements. As shown in the paper, the proposed panel element can be quite large, yet, it can give accurate analysis results. This work helps to overcome a common dilemma in practical use of finite element analysis, where finite element theory requires element sizes to be sufficiently small, but practical considerations suggest the use of large-size elements that simplify the modelling process and reduce excesses in generated results. A model built using macro-panel elements is equivalent to the model built using smaller shell elements, with the normal and shear stresses in the former being the same as the stresses in the finely meshed shell element model, We identify a number of performance benefits that become available as a consequence of modelling the shell elements at a higher level of abstraction

    Wave interaction with a sea dike using a VOF finite-volume method

    This paper represents a solver for numerical simulation of breaking waves, developed at Ghent University using an implicit cellstaggered VOF finite volume approach. The mathematical model is based on unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes (NS) equations with a free surface. A flux-difference splitting approach with the MUSCL type (or the ENO scheme) and a central-difference scheme are applied for evaluation of the inviscid and viscous fluxes, respectively. A projection method is involved for coupling of the pressure and the velocity. A free surface is tracked with the VOF method, in which the approximate dynamic boundary conditions are implemented. In addition, second- and fourth-order artificial damping terms are introduced to the velocity normal to the cell face. A Sommerfeld radiation condition is implemented at the open boundary to dissipate the energy of outgoing waves. Moreover, cut-cell techniques are utilized for treatment of an arbitrary geometry. The solver can capture many physical phenomena during the interaction of waves with a dike, when a wave run-up and overtopping over an impermeable sea dike are performed in a numerical wave tank

    Scientific Highlights of the HETE-2 Mission

    The HETE-2 mission has been highly productive. It has observed more than 250 GRBs so far. It is currently localizing 25 - 30 GRBs per year, and has localized 43 GRBs to date. Twenty-one of these localizations have led to the detection of X-ray, optical, or radio afterglows, and as of now, 11 of the bursts with afterglows have known redshifts. HETE-2 has confirmed the connection between GRBs and Type Ic supernovae, a singular achievement and certainly one of the scientific highlights of the mission so far. It has provided evidence that the isotropic-equivalent energies and luminosities of GRBs are correlated with redshift, implying that GRBs and their progenitors evolve strongly with redshift. Both of these results have profound implications for the nature of GRB progenitors and for the use of GRBs as a probe of cosmology and the early universe. HETE-2 has placed severe constraints on any X-ray or optical afterglow of a short GRB.     Communication is key: a study of the development of communication key skills in China

    Different countries offer alternative curricula around what might be designated language, literacy and/or communication. This paper focuses on the latter which has typically been associated with vocational education and often labelled a ‘key’ or ‘core’ skill that forms part of a wider set of life and employability skills. In recent years, as China has emerged as a global economy, education has been significant in its policy and development. This research explores staff and student responses to the introduction of a key skills communication course in three Chinese further education vocational colleges. The initiative was prompted by research in China which had suggested that communication is important not just for education (Ye and Li 2007) but also for employability, and that the ability to communicate effectively could be instrumental in individuals’ success and development (Tong and Zhong 2008). It explores what communication key skills might mean in a Chinese context and questions notions of transferability and of competence and performance in communication. It analyses how motivation could affect learner success and the relationship of pedagogy to curriculum and, finally, it considers how communication might be an element in the longer-term social and political development of critical literacies

    Measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of Y(1S) and Y(2S) mesons in PbPb collisions at √S^{S}NN = 5.02 TeV

    The second-order Fourier coefficients (υ2_{2}) characterizing the azimuthal distributions of Υ(1S) and Υ(2S) mesons produced in PbPb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02 TeV are studied. The Υmesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay channel, as measured by the CMS detector. The collected data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb1^{-1}. The scalar product method is used to extract the υ2_{2} coefficients of the azimuthal distributions. Results are reported for the rapidity range |y| < 2.4, in the transverse momentum interval 0 < pT_{T} < 50 GeV/c, and in three centrality ranges of 10–30%, 30–50% and 50–90%. In contrast to the J/ψ mesons, the measured υ2_{2} values for the Υ mesons are found to be consistent with zero

    Measurement of prompt D0^{0} and D\overline{D}0^{0} meson azimuthal anisotropy and search for strong electric fields in PbPb collisions at root SNN\sqrt{S_{NN}} = 5.02 TeV

    The strong Coulomb field created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is expected to produce a rapiditydependent difference (Av2) in the second Fourier coefficient of the azimuthal distribution (elliptic flow, v2) between D0 (uc) and D0 (uc) mesons. Motivated by the search for evidence of this field, the CMS detector at the LHC is used to perform the first measurement of Av2. The rapidity-averaged value is found to be (Av2) = 0.001 ? 0.001 (stat)? 0.003 (syst) in PbPb collisions at ?sNN = 5.02 TeV. In addition, the influence of the collision geometry is explored by measuring the D0 and D0mesons v2 and triangular flow coefficient (v3) as functions of rapidity, transverse momentum (pT), and event centrality (a measure of the overlap of the two Pb nuclei). A clear centrality dependence of prompt D0 meson v2 values is observed, while the v3 is largely independent of centrality.     Measurement of the Y(1S) pair production cross section and search for resonances decaying to Y(1S)μ⁺μ⁻ in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV

    The fiducial cross section for Y(1S)pair production in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeVin the region where both Y(1S)mesons have an absolute rapidity below 2.0 is measured to be 79 ± 11 (stat) ±6 (syst) ±3 (B)pbassuming the mesons are produced unpolarized. The last uncertainty corresponds to the uncertainty in the Y(1S)meson dimuon branching fraction. The measurement is performed in the final state with four muons using proton-proton collision data collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb1^{-1}. This process serves as a standard model reference in a search for narrow resonances decaying to Y(1S)μ+^{+}μ^{-} in the same final state. Such a resonance could indicate the existence of a tetraquark that is a bound state of two bquarks and two b̅ antiquarks. The tetraquark search is performed for masses in the vicinity of four times the bottom quark mass, between 17.5 and 19.5GeV, while a generic search for other resonances is performed for masses between 16.5 and 27GeV. No significant excess of events compatible with a narrow resonance is observed in the data. Limits on the production cross section times branching fraction to four muons via an intermediate Y(1S)resonance are set as a function of the resonance mass
