    Analytical modelling of modular and unequal tooth width surface-mounted permanent magnet machines

    This paper presents simple analytical modelling for 2 types of 3-phase surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) machines such as modular and unequal tooth width (UNET) machines with different slot/pole number combinations. It is based on the slotless open-circuit air-gap flux density and the slotted air-gap relative permeance calculations. This model allows calculating the open-circuit air-gap flux density, phase flux linkage and back electromotive force (EMF), average torque of both the modular and UNET machines. Its accuracy has been validated by 2D finite element (FE) method. A flux focusing/defocusing factor has also been introduced to analyse the influence of flux gaps in alternate stator teeth of modular machines on the machine electromagnetic performances. It has been found that by properly choosing the slot/pole number combination and flux gap width, the open-circuit air-gap flux density, the winding factor and the flux focusing effect can all be improved. As a result, the performance of modular machine can be significantly boosted. The analytical and FE models have been validated by experiments

    Comparative Study of Fault Tolerant Switched Flux Permanent Magnet Machines

    The fault tolerant capabilities are compared in this paper for the conventional double layer switched flux permanent magnet machine and its single layer counterparts, i.e. C-core, Ecore and modular. The comparison includes the inter-turn shortcircuit and irreversible demagnetization faults. A combination of Simulink and finite element models is used in the study. Based on the predictions, it is found that the modular topology produces the lowest short-circuit current and also has the best demagnetization withstand capability while the conventional one produces the highest short-circuit current and has the worst demagnetization withstand capability. The frozen permeability method is employed to separate the flux produced by armature current and magnets, and the results showed that, besides the influence of short-circuit current, the available magnet volume and magnetic circuit configuration play an important role in the demagnetization process. It is also found that removing half of the magnets, such as using C-core, E-core and modular topologies, generally improves the demagnetization withstand capability and also increases the torque per magnet volume. Measured results are also presented to validate the short-circuit current predictions and magnet demagnetization

    Avalanche noise characteristics of thin GaAs structures with distributed carrier generation

    It is known that both pure electron and pure hole injection into thin GaAs multiplication regions gives rise to avalanche multiplication with noise lower than predicted by the local noise model. In this paper, it is shown that the noise from multiplication initiated by carriers generated throughout a 0.1 μm avalanche region is also lower than predicted by the local model but higher than that obtained with pure injection of either carrier type. This behavior is due to the effects of nonlocal ionization brought about by the dead space; the minimum distance a carrier has to travel in the electric field to initiate an ionization even

    Apolipoprotein AIV gene variant S347 is associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease and lower plasma apolipoprotein AIV levels

    The impact of common variants in the apolipoprotein gene cluster (APOC3-A4-A5) on prospective coronary heart disease (CHD) risk was examined in healthy UK men. Of the 2808 men followed over 9 years, 187 had a clinically defined CHD event. Examination of 9 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in this group revealed that homozygotes for APOA4 S347 had significantly increased risk of CHD [hazard ratio (HR) of 2.07 (95%CI 1.04 to 4.12)], whereas men homozygous for APOC3 1100T were protected [HR 0.28 (95%CI 0.09 to 0.87)]. In stepwise multiple regression analysis, after entering all the variants and adjusting for established risk factors APOA4 T347S alone remained in the model. Using all nine SNPs, the highest risk-estimate haplotypes carried APOA4 S347 and rare alleles of the two flanking intergenic markers. The protective effect of APOC3 1100T could be explained by negative linkage disequilibrium with these alleles. To determine the association of APOA4 T347S with apoAIV levels, the relationship was examined in 1600 healthy young European men and women. S347 homozygotes had significantly lower apoAIV plasma levels (13.64±0.59 mg/dL) compared with carriers of the T347 allele (14.90±0.12 mg/dL) (P=0.035). These results demonstrate that genetic variation in and around APOA4, independent of the effects of triglyceride, is associated with risk of CHD and apoAIV levels, supporting an antiatherogenic role for apoAIV

    Performance Comparison between Consequent-Pole and Inset Modular Permanent Magnet Machines

    This paper proposes some consequent-pole modular permanent magnet machines with different flux gap widths and slot/pole number combinations. The corresponding inset modular permanent magnet machines having the same magnet volume are also presented for comparison. It has been demonstrated that the output torques of the consequent pole modular machines are always higher than those of the inset modular machines regardless of flux gap widths and slot/pole number combinations. Other electromagnetic performances such as back-EMF, cogging torque, and iron losses, etc. are calculated by 2D FEA software and compared as well. The advantages and disadvantages of consequent and inset modular permanent magnet machines are summarized in this paper

    Dimensional crossover in fragmentation

    Experiments in which thick clay plates and glass rods are fractured have revealed different behavior of fragment mass distribution function in the small and large fragment regions. In this paper we explain this behavior using non-extensive Tsallis statistics and show how the crossover between the two regions is caused by the change in the fragments' dimensionality during the fracture process. We obtain a physical criterion for the position of this crossover and an expression for the change in the power law exponent between the small and large fragment regions. These predictions are in good agreement with the experiments on thick clay plate

    Antibacterial effect of orange Monascus pigment against Staphylococcus aureus

    The objective of this work was to research the antibacterial effects of orange pigment, which was separated from Monascus pigments, against Staphylococcus aureus. The increase of the diameter of inhibition zone treated with orange pigment indicated that orange pigment had remarkable antibacterial activities against S. aureus. Orange pigment (10 mg ml−1) had a strong destructive effect on the membrane and structure of S. aureus by the analysis of scanning electron microscopy as well as transmission electron microscopy. Sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) further demonstrated that the cell membrane was seriously damaged by orange pigment, which resulted in the leakage of protein from S. aureus cells. A significant decrease in the synthesis of DNA was also seen in S. aureus cells exposed to 10 mg ml−1 orange pigment. All in all, orange pigment showed excellent antibacterial effects against S. aureus

    Modular Permanent Magnet Machines with Alternate Teeth Having Tooth Tips

    This paper presents single layer modular permanent magnet machines with either wound or unwound teeth with tooth tips. The structures with wound teeth having tooth tips are suitable for modular machines with slot number higher than pole number to compensate for the drop in winding factor due to the flux gaps in alternate stator teeth, accordingly to maintain or even to increase their average torques. However, the structures with unwound teeth having tooth tips are suitable for modular machines with slot number lower than pole number to increase the winding factor and hence to further improve the machine performance. The phase back-EMF, on-load torque, iron and copper losses as well as efficiency have been calculated using finite element analysis for different slot/pole number combinations, and for different flux gap and tooth tip widths. It is found that by properly choosing the flux gap and tooth tip widths, both the on-load torque performance and the efficiency can be optimized for the investigated machines with different slot/pole number combinations. Experiments have been carried out to validate the finite element results

    The impact of analyst sentiment on UK stock recommendations and target prices

    © 2015 Taylor & Francis. The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between narrative sentiment in analysts' company reports and their recommendation and target price outputs. We study an industry-balanced sample of 275 UK quoted company sell-side analyst reports over the period 2006-2010 using a content analysis methodology to measure net sentiment for a range of themes. We then model analysts' outputs against themed sentiment scores to analyse the impact of the Global Financial Crisis. We find that themed sentiments impact upon analysts' outputs, but their magnitude and direction vary over the pre-crisis, crisis and post-crisis periods. In particular, before the crisis we find a strong negative relationship between the macroeconomic and regulatory environment and report outputs, though this effect diminishes somewhat with the onset of the crisis, to be restored thereafter. Growth sentiment exerts a weak positive impact before the crisis which disappears thereafter. Financial performance sentiment becomes a significant positive driver of outputs following the crisis. There is evidently a "back to basics" approach following the crisis which restores financial fundamentals to the heart of stock analysis. Our findings provide some insight into the thought processes of analysts by identifying the dynamic relation between analysts' outputs and themed sentiments
