Estimation of allantoin flux using continuous infusion of [14C]allantoin: Sensitivity to plasma loading with unlabelled allantoin
Allantoin net flux through the plasma allantoin compartment was determined in sheep given a roughage diet by means of a continuous infusion of [4,5-14C]allantoin for 17 h. Unlabelled allantoin was infused intravenously during the last 7 h of the tracer infusion to increase the allantoin flux by approximately 75%. When unlabelled allantoin was infused, the specific radioactivity of allantoin in plasma and urine declined exponentially to approach a lower plateausome 2â3 h later. The estimate of net flux during the infusion of unlabelled allantoin, estimated from blood plasma and urine, was on average 79 and 90% of expected values. Expected values of allantoin net flux during infusion of unlabelled allantoin were calculated as the sum of allantoin net flux pre-loading plus the known rate of infusion of the allantoin load. It is probable that endogenous allantoin synthesis was decreased by the infusion of allantoin: allosteric inhibition of uricase appears a plausible explanation for this observation, and for lower estimates of net flux. Appearance of labelled allantoin-C in ruminal or blood bicarbonate was negligible. Our results indicate that net flux of allantoin through blood plasma is a good predictor of the entry rate of allantoin into the primary compartment and should be a better predictor of rumen microbialoutflow than urinary allantoin excretion. However, measurements of allantoin-specific radioactivity, during continuous infusion, should be taken after a period of 24 h, at which time the true plateau specific radioactivity value of allantoin in plasma would be attained
Modal Platonism and the problem of negativity.
The Platonic account of modality says, roughly, that truths about alien possibilities are grounded in uninstantiated universals. Recently, Ingram has raised a problem for this kind of view, which is that it apparently requires negative facts to play a truthmaking role. Ingram offers an alternative Platonic account which makes use of modal instantiation relations. In this paper, I highlight some of the costs of Ingramâs new account and argue that a more appealing version of Platonismâand modal theory in generalâis one that is supplemented with an ontology of totality facts

Red star-forming and blue passive galaxies in clusters
We explore the relation between colour and specific star formation rate
(derived from optical spectra obtained by SDSS DR4) of over 6,000 galaxies
(M_r<=-20.5) in and around low redshift (z<0.12) clusters. Even though most red
galaxies have little or no ongoing star formation, and most blue galaxies are
currently forming stars, there are significant populations of red star-forming
(SF) and blue passive galaxies. This paper examines various properties of
galaxies belonging to the latter two categories. These properties include
morphological parameters, internal extinction, spectral features such as
EW(H_delta) and the 4000 ang break, and metallicity. Our analysis shows that
the blue passive galaxies have properties very similar to their SF
counterparts, except that their large range in EW(H_delta) indicates recent
truncation of star formation. The red SF galaxies fall into two broad
categories, one of them being massive galaxies in cluster cores dominated by an
old stellar population, but with evidence of current star formation in the
core. For the remaining red SF galaxies it is evident from various metallicity
measures and mean stellar ages, that their colours result from the predominance
of a metal-rich stellar population. The implication of the properties of these
SF galaxies on environmental studies, like that of the Butcher-Oemler effect,

Gamma rays and neutrinos from the Crab Nebula produced by pulsar accelerated nuclei
We investigate the consequences of the acceleration of heavy nuclei (e.g.
iron nuclei) by the Crab pulsar. Accelerated nuclei can photodisintegrate in
collisions with soft photons produced in the pulsar's outer gap, injecting
energetic neutrons which decay either inside or outside the Crab Nebula. The
protons from neutron decay inside the nebula are trapped by the Crab Nebula
magnetic field, and accumulate inside the nebula producing gamma-rays and
neutrinos in collisions with the matter in the nebula. Neutrons decaying
outside the Crab Nebula contribute to the Galactic cosmic rays. We compute the
expected fluxes of gamma-rays and neutrinos, and find that our model could
account for the observed emission at high energies and may be tested by
searching for high energy neutrinos with future neutrino telescopes currently

Two new Wolf-Rayet stars in the LMC
We report the discovery of two previously unknown WN3 stars in the Large
Magellanic Cloud. Both are bright (15th magnitude), isolated, and located in
regions covered in earlier surveys, although both are relatively weak-lined. We
suggest that there may be remaining undiscovered WNE stars in
the LMC
Radiative association and inverse predissociation of oxygen atoms
The formation of \mbox{O}_2 by radiative association and by inverse
predissociation of ground state oxygen atoms is studied using
quantum-mechanical methods. Cross sections, emission spectra, and rate
coefficients are presented and compared with prior experimental and theoretical
results. At temperatures below 1000~K radiative association occurs by approach
along the state of \mbox{O}_2 and above 1000~K inverse
predissociation through the \mbox{B}\,{}^3\Sigma_u^- state is the dominant
mechanism. This conclusion is supported by a quantitative comparison between

Sprinting with an amputation: Some race-based lower-limb step observations.
BACKGROUND: T44 sprinting with an amputation is still in a state of relative infancy. Future scope for athletic training and prosthetic limb development may be assisted with a better understanding of information derived from T44 athletes when under race-based conditions. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the behaviour of step count and step frequency when under competitive conditions. STUDY DESIGN: The study comprises two elements: (1) a video-based analysis of race-based limb-to-limb symmetry and (2) a video-based analysis of race-based step count. METHODS: Video analysis of several major events from 1996-2012 are assessed for step count and step limb-to-limb symmetry characteristics. RESULTS: The video analysis highlights limb-to-limb imbalances greater than those indicated in the previous literature. A low step count is determined to be desirable for success in the 100-m event. CONCLUSION: Future analysis of athletes with a lower-limb amputation would be worthwhile when placed under race-based conditions as the limb-to-limb behaviour is more exaggerated than those seen in typical studies held within a laboratory setting. The within-event behaviour of step counts requires further investigation to establish where these take place or whether it is a cumulative step length issue. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This article increases the understanding of the race-based behaviour of amputee athletes and provides more information to contribute to any discussions on the performance of lower-limb prostheses
A Search for TeV Gamma-Ray Emission from High-Peaked Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars Using the Whipple Air-Cherenkov Telescope
Blazars have traditionally been separated into two broad categories based
upon their optical emission characteristics; BL Lacs, with faint or no emission
lines, and flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) with prominent, broad emission
lines. The spectral energy distribution of FSRQs has generally been thought of
as being more akin to the low-peaked BL Lacs, which exhibit a peak in the
infrared region of the spectrum, as opposed to high-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs),
which exhibit a peak in UV/X-ray region of the spectrum. All blazars currently
confirmed as sources of TeV emission are HBLs. Recent surveys have found
several FSRQs exhibiting spectral properties similar to HBLs, particularly the
synchrotron peak frequency. These objects are potential sources of TeV emission
according to several models of blazar jet emission and blazar evolution.
Measurements of TeV flux or upper limits could impact existing theories
explaining the links between different blazar types and could have a
significant impact on our understanding of the nature of objects that are
capable of TeV emission. In particular, the presence (or absence) of TeV
emission from FSRQs could confirm (or cast doubt upon) recent evolutionary
models that expect intermediate objects in a transitionary state between FSRQ
and BL Lac. The Whipple 10 meter imaging air-Cherenkov gamma-ray telescope is
well suited for TeV gamma-ray observations. Using the Whipple telescope, we
have taken data on a small selection of nearby(z<0.1 in most cases),
high-peaked FSRQs. Although one of the objects, B2 0321+33, showed marginal
evidence of flaring, no significant emission was detected. The implications of
this paucity of emission and the derived upper limits are discussed.Comment: accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journa
Real Potential
There\u27s a student in my philosophy class who has real potential. I might express this thought in any of the following ways: She is potentially a philosopher ; She is a potential philosopher ; She has the potential to be a philosopher. The first way uses a cognate of potential as an adverb to modify is. The second ways uses potential as an adjective to modify philosopher. However, the third way uses potential as a noun to refer to something that the student has. What kind of thing is this potential? One worry about even asking this question is that this nominalization of the adjective potential suggests a metaphysical picture that is an artifact of language. This is even more strongly suggested by the less ambiguous nominalization potentiality. Once we have the term potentiality, we have a new kind of entity to countenance, and questions about its nature arise. One might argue, just because we use the word potentiality, we should not think that it refers to a thing that someone can have.
There is something disingenuous about such an argument. It proceeds as if the adverbial and adjectival uses of potential are unproblematic, and questions only arise with the nominalization. But it is not obvious what it means to potentially be something, or what it means to be a potential something. To say that someone is potentially a philosopher is to talk about a way of being that falls short of actuality. And a potential philosopher is not a kind of philosopher at all. So what is it? Each of the three above formulations is a modal claim. If there is anything philosophical puzzling about a potentiality claim, it is not going to go away by translating it into an equivalent modal claim.
In this chapter I defend the existence of potentialities against anti-realist arguments, and make a proposal as to their nature. The proposal, in short, is that potentialities are properties, specifically dispositions, though more needs to be said about properties and dispositions. I will do this in Part I. In Part II, I will address two lines of argument against potentialities: that they are reducible, and that they are causally inert
