    Modelling the interactions between tumour cells and a blood vessel in a microenvironment within a vascular tumour

    In this paper, we develop a mathematical model to describe interactions between tumour cells and a compliant blood vessel that supplies oxygen to the region. We assume that, in addition to proliferating, the tumour cells die through apoptosis and necrosis. We also assume that pressure differences within the tumour mass, caused by spatial variations in proliferation and degradation, cause cell motion. We couple the behaviour of the blood vessel into the model for the oxygen tension. The model equations track the evolution of the densities of live and dead cells, the oxygen tension within the tumour, the live and dead cell speeds, the pressure and the width of the blood vessel. We present explicit solutions to the model for certain parameter regimes, and then solve the model numerically for more general parameter regimes. We show how the resulting steady-state behaviour varies as the key model parameters are changed. Finally, we discuss the biological implications of our work

    The European Court of Human Rights and Its Search for Common Values

    Values play a significant role in the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights (Court), and carry the potential to influence the Court’s interpretation of the European Convention on Human Rights (Convention). This is particularly evident when the Court refers to common values whilst engaging in European consensus analysis. By exploring sociological approaches to the concept of values and Gilbert’s summative and plural subject accounts of shared values, this article argues that it is reasonable for the Court to search for common values amongst the member states of the Convention, in an effort to align its interpretation of Convention rights with such values. However, the article contends that when the Court ascribes normative authority to shared values identified purely through a comparative analysis of state practice, it is confounding the summative and plural subject accounts of common values in its reasoning, thus raising legitimacy concerns

    Rapeseed is the oil-bearing seed from plants of the Brassica genus. It grows well in the cooler agricultural regions o f the world and for this reason has long been thought to be a promising crop for interior Alaska. Rapeseed has been grow n in India and China for thousands and in Europe for hundreds o f years (Bolton 1980). Its history in North America began in 1943 when a small quantity of seed was imported into Canada. In recent years, its production has been largely that from cultivars bred for production of seed low in erucic acid and glucosinolate content. Seed from these cultivars is referred to by the Canadian Rapeseed Industry as canola. Its qualities are desirable in the edible-oil market, the largest market for products from canola seed. Canada is now one of the world’s largest producers and is the world’s largest exporter o f rapeseed. The meal that remains after oil extraction is high in protein and is used as a supplement in livestock feeds. The whole seed can also be used as a feed supplement. Some cultivars o f rapeseed that are high in erucic acid are also grow n for use in plastics and industrial oils (Genser and Eskin 1979). In addition, forage rapeseed cultivars can be used as livestock pasture. Research concerning the production of rapeseed has been addressed by the Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (AFES) for several years. O f specific concern has been the selection of appropriate cultivars (Wooding et al. 1978), response to various nitrogen (N) rates, row spacings and seeding rates (Lewis and Knight 1987), performance in reduced-tillage systems in rotation with barley (Knight and Lewis 1986), the potential for frost seeding in late fall and early spring (Knight and Sparrow 1984) and response to boron (B) to enhance early seed ripening (Wooding 1985). In addition, in 1978 the Cooperative Extension Service (CES) began conducting seminars on production o f rapeseed for Alaskan farmers. In 1979 and 1980, CES employed Dr. J.L . Bolton, a rapeseed specialist from the University o f Alberta, in an extension capacity to give technical assistance to farmers on producing rapeseed (Bolton 1980)

    Preliminary genetic analyses of important musculoskeletal conditions of thoroughbred racehorses in Hong Kong

    A retrospective cohort study of important musculoskeletal conditions of Thoroughbred racehorses was conducted using health records generated over a 15 year period (n = 5062, 1296 sires). The prevalence of each condition in the study population was: fracture, 13%; osteoarthritis, 10%; suspensory ligament injury, 10%; and tendon injury, 19%. Linear and logistic sire and animal regression models were built to describe the binary occurrence of these musculoskeletal conditions, and to evaluate the significance of possible environmental risk factors. The heritability of each condition was estimated using residual maximum likelihood (REML). Bivariate mixed models were used to generate estimates of genetic correlations between each pair of conditions.<p></p> Heritability estimates of fracture, osteoarthritis, suspensory ligament and tendon injury were small to moderate (range: 0.01–0.20). Fracture was found to be positively genetically correlated with both osteoarthritis and suspensory ligament injury. These results suggest that there is a significant genetic component involved in the risk of the studied conditions. Due to positive genetic correlations, a reduction in prevalence of one of the correlated conditions may effect a reduction in risk of the other condition.<p></p&gt

    The metallogenic evolution of the Greater Antilles

    The Greater Antilles host some of the world's most important deposits of bauxite and lateritic nickel as well as significant resources of gold and silver, copper, zinc, manganese, cobalt and chromium. Beginning in Jurassic time, sedimentary exhalative base metal deposits accumulated in marine sedimentary rift basins as North and South America drifted apart. With the onset of intraoceanic subduction during the Early Cretaceous, a primitive (tholeiitic) island arc formed above a southwesterly-dipping subduction zone. Podiform chromite deposits formed in the mantle portion of the supra-subduction zone, directly above subducted Proto-Caribbean oceanic lithosphere. Within the nascent island arc, bimodal-mafic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits formed in a fore-arc setting; mafic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits formed later in mature back-arc basins. The Pueblo Viejo gold district, with five million ounces in production and twenty million ounces in mineable reserves, formed at 108-112Ma, in an apical rift or back-arc setting. By Late Cretaceous time, calc-alkaline volcanism was well established along the entire length of the Greater Antilles. Volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits including shallow submarine deposits characteristic of the primitive island arc gave way to porphyry copper and epithermal precious metal deposits typical of the mature island arc. Oblique collision of the Greater Antilles with North America began in the Late Cretaceous in Cuba and migrated eastward. Orogenic gold and tungsten deposits that formed during the collision event are preserved in ophiolites and in metamorphic core complexes. Since the Eocene, regional tectonism has been dominated by strike-slip motion as the North American continent moved westward relative to the Caribbean Plate. Large nickel-cobalt laterite deposits were formed when serpentinites were exposed to weathering and erosion during the mid-Tertiary. Bauxite deposits were derived from the weathering of volcanic ash within a carbonate platform of Eocene to Miocene age
