A Study of Local Poultry Market News Service in South Dakota with Particular Reference to the Turkey Industry

When the first settlers arrived in South Dakota in 1860 they found many turkeys in the woods of a ridge that forms the border between Yankton and Turner counties. They named it Turkey Ridge. The name has continued, but the turkeys are no more. When the first domestic turkeys were brought into the Dakota territory is not known. The farmers of this state have for many years raised turkeys. However, it has only been within the last decade or so that large flocks have appeared, Twenty years ago a farmer or his wife kept four or five hens and a tom or two back each fall for breeding purposes. According to Table 1 the number of birds on hand each year increased from 179,000 in 1931 to 399,000 in 1940 and then decreased to 44,000 in 1950. They and their progeny received almost no care. They usually obtained their feed around the barnyard and pastures. In this manner the poultry and feed cost were relatively low. Whatever the turkeys brought in the fall was considered profit

The Effects of Mentoring and Induction Programs and Personal Resiliency on the Retention of Early Career Teachers

The purpose of this research study was to examine the effects of K–12 early career teacher participation in a mentoring or induction program as well as personal resiliency on intention to teach next year and still be teaching in five years. Teacher retention has been an issue for over 50 years and is one of the least understood issues in the education profession. High teacher turnover rates are costly to districts and impact student learning. Teacher resilience is an emerging field and researchers are beginning to study teacher resilience to understand what enables some teachers to carry on in the face of instructional and behavioral challenges and why others succumb to the effects of stress, attrition and burnout and leave the profession. Wagnild’s (2009) RS14™ resilience scale was used to determine the resiliency levels for early career teachers measuring skills in self-reliance, purpose, equanimity, perseverance, and authenticity. The general purpose for mentoring and induction programs for early career teachers is to improve the overall quality of their instructional and assessment skills in order to impact student learning. This study looked at the influence of personal resiliency and experience in mentoring or induction programs on intention to remain in the K–12 teaching profession. Multiple regression results showed a significant relationship between resiliency, a positive assessment of mentoring program experience, and intention to continue teaching next year and in five years; family situations and personal health also influenced intention to teach in the next year. Results also show a high percentage of these early career teacher respondents did participate in a mentoring or induction program and that those participating in a two year or multi-year program were more likely to have a positive assessment of their experience than those in a one year or less program

Re-Framing Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure Documents to Facilitate the Transformation of Service-Learning Pedagogy to Community-Engaged Scholarship

In the College of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Cincinnati, John Kotter\u27s eight stage model of organizational change was utilized as a template by faculty while focusing efforts on facilitating community-engaged scholarship. The Kotter model proved to be a beneficial tool when developing a framework for transforming servicelearning pedagogy to community-engaged scholarship. Additionally, use of the model allowed the group to focus attention on needed areas for future development

Georg Angermaier (1913-1945).

The development of a TMS320C4x serial communications board

This thesis presents the development of a circuit board which converts the bidirectional bit-parallel communications port data bus of the Texas Instruments TMS320C4x family of digital signal processors into a high speed bit-serial data bus. The usual method of interconnecting Texas Instruments TMS320C4x digital signal processors is by ribbon cables connected to parallel communications ports. The cables are cumbersome and do not allow reliable data communications over distances greater than one meter. The board overcomes this limitation by using a Cypress CY7B923 Hotlink transmitter to convert from eight bit parallel to ten bits serial using an internal 8B/10B data encoder. The transmitter sends the data at bit rates from 160 to 330 megabits per second either through a category-5 unshielded twisted pair cable or through multimode fiber optics. A Cypress CY7B933 Hotlink receiver decodes and converts the data from ten bit serial back to eight bit parallel. The maximum length for a category-5 cable connected to the Hotlink transmitter/receiver pair is 150 feet at a serial data rate of 250 megabits/second. The board uses three state machines compiled into an Altera EPM7129ELC84-15 programmable logic device. One state machine is responsible for communicating with and transferring data to the TMS320C4x digital signal processor. Another state machine is responsible for transmitter control and data transmission. The last state machine controls the receiver. Each of the state machines was implemented using VHDL hardware description language in the Altera Max Plus II development environment. The TMS320C4x communications board has been built and its capabilities tested. The board has allowed a TMS320C40 processor to send data across a 15 foot category-5 unshielded twisted pair cable at 4.9 megabytes per second. This data rate should be the same using a 150 foot cable. Two suggestions are made for improving the data rate. First, the speed at which the state machines are operating can be improved by compiling the VHDL code into a faster programmable logic device. Second, the ‘C4x interface can more quickly detect an attempted read to or write from a TMS320C4x processor if the synchronization flip flops used by the \u27C4x state machine are removed

The Community-Engaged Scholarship Review, Promotion, and Tenure Package: A Guide for Faculty and Committee Members

    Get PDF
The Peer Review Workgroup of the Community-Engaged Scholarship for Health Collaborative developed a novel set of quality community-engaged scholarship characteristics and a resource package aimed at two primary audiences: faculty seeking promotion or tenure based on community-engaged scholarship; and review, promotion, and tenure committee members seeking to understand how to evaluate communityengaged scholars. We describe this package and its development, illustrate its use in a faculty development initiative, and offer recommendafions for fature application
