Public health ethics: informing better public health practice
Public health ethics has emerged and grown as an independent discipline over the last decade. It involves using ethical theory and empirical analyses to determine and justify the right thing to do in public health. In this paper, we distinguish public health ethics from clinical ethics, research ethics, public health law and politics. We then discuss issues in public health ethics including: how to weigh up the benefits, harms and costs of intervening; how to ensure that public health interventions produce fair outcomes; the potential for public health to undermine or promote the rights of citizens; and the significance of being transparent and inclusive in public health interventions. We conclude that the explicit and systematic consideration of ethical issues will, and should, become central to every public health worker\u27s daily practice
Why do men self-harm? A literature review
This critical review developed and analysed two key strands. One strand examined the reasons why men self-harm; the other examined effective ways to educate staff about self-harm. These strands were interweaved to develop an in-depth and informative review to help educate and inform staff who work with and support men who self-harm. A systematic search strategy was conducted to find primary research articles for analysis and evaluation. Three key themes emerged: interpersonal relationships; attitudes and educating staff. This review recommends that staff should be encouraged to change their behaviour and view themselves and their relationships differently. This can have a positive impact on developing and maintaining therapeutic relationships
Playing with time: Kate Bush’s temporal strategies and resistant time consciousness
This article focuses on two of Kate Bush’s post-Aerial (2005) albums: Director’s Cut (2011) and 50 Words for Snow (2011). In these albums Bush plays with the temporal qualities of recorded music to create the conditions for self-reflexive internal time consciousness to emerge within the listener. I argue that self-reflexive internal time consciousness is a process that enables a listener to gain some understanding that they are embroiled in an act of perception forged via active engagement with recorded music. Bush creates these conditions in two principle ways: In Director’s Cut she disturbs the memory of previous recorded versions that are re-visited on the album so they can be mobilised as new, interpretative-perceptive acts. In 50 Words for Snow she uses duration as a structure to support the construction of extensive perception. Bush plays with time on these albums because her conceptual music relies upon the uninterrupted unfolding of consciousness as it becomes interlaced with her recordings, understood in the Husserlian sense of temporal objects. Stickler syndrome is believed to be the most common connective tissue disorder in Europe and the USA. Severe osteoarthritis sets in at very early age in 3rd to 4th decade of life necessitating joint arthroplasty. The commissioning of CMS sites: improving the site reliability
The computing system of the CMS experiment works using distributed resources from more than 60 computing centres worldwide. These centres, located in Europe, America and Asia are interconnected by the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid. The operation of the system requires a stable and reliable behaviour of the underlying infrastructure. CMS has established a procedure to extensively test all relevant aspects of a Grid site, such as the ability to efficiently use their network to transfer data, the functionality of all the site services relevant for CMS and the capability to sustain the various CMS computing workflows at the required scale. This contribution describes in detail the procedure to rate CMS sites depending on their performance, including the complete automation of the program, the description of monitoring tools, and its impact in improving the overall reliability of the Grid from the point of view of the CMS computing system
The CMS Integration Grid Testbed
The CMS Integration Grid Testbed (IGT) comprises USCMS Tier-1 and Tier-2
hardware at the following sites: the California Institute of Technology, Fermi
National Accelerator Laboratory, the University of California at San Diego, and
the University of Florida at Gainesville. The IGT runs jobs using the Globus
Toolkit with a DAGMan and Condor-G front end. The virtual organization (VO) is
managed using VO management scripts from the European Data Grid (EDG). Gridwide
monitoring is accomplished using local tools such as Ganglia interfaced into
the Globus Metadata Directory Service (MDS) and the agent based Mona Lisa.

Virtual Data Toolkit (VDT) is distributed using Pacman. During a continuo us
two month span in Fall of 2002, over 1 million official CMS GEANT based Monte
Carlo events were generated and returned to CERN for analysis while being
demonstrated at SC2002. In this paper, we describe the process that led to one

Preparation and characterization of beryllium doped organic plasma polymer coatings
We report the formation of beryllium doped plasma polymerized coatings derived from a helical resonator deposition apparatus, using diethylberyllium as the organometaric source. These coatings had an appearance not unlike plain plasma polymer and were relatively stable to ambient exposure. The coatings were characterized by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. Coating rates approaching 0.7 {mu}m hr{sup {minus}1} were obtained with a beryllium-to-carbon ratio of 1:1.3. There is also a significant oxygen presence in the coating as well which is attributed to oxidation upon exposure of the coating to air. The XPS data show only one peak for beryllium with the preponderance of the XPS data suggesting that the beryllium exists as BeO. Diethylberyllium was found to be inadequate as a source for beryllium doped plasma polymer, due to thermal decomposition and low vapor recovery rates
