    Six Districts Begin the Principal Pipeline Initiative

    This first report of an ongoing evaluation of The Wallace Foundation's Principal Pipeline Initiative describes the six participating school districts' plans and activities during the first year of their grants. The evaluation, conducted by Policy Studies Associates and the RAND Corporation, isintended to inform policy makers and practitioners about the process of carrying out new policies and practices for school leadership and about the results of investments in the Principal Pipeline Initiative. This report is based on collection and analysis of qualitative data, including the districts' proposals, work plans, and progress reports and semi-structured interviews in spring 2012 with 91 administrators employed by districts and their partner institutions. Leaders in all districts report wanting to enlarge their pools of strong applicants for principal positions and to identify and cultivate leadership talent as early as possible in educators' careers.Districts are actively working on allrequired pipeline components: (1) with stakeholder participation, they have developed standards and identified competencies for principals, which they plan to use to guide principal training, hiring, evaluation, and support; (2) they are initiating or strengthening partnerships with university training programs; (3) for hiring, they have standard performance tasks and are developing systems to capture data on candidates' experience; (4) they have diagnostic evaluation tools and are working to build the capacity of principals' supervisors and mentors to support principals' skill development. In addition, all are also bolstering district-run training programs for graduates of university training programs who aspire to become principals

    Deep-sea anglerfishes (Lophiiformes, Ceratioidei) of the familes Caulophrynidae, Melanocetidae, Himantolophidae, Diceratiidae, Oneirodidae, Thaumatichthyidae, Centrophrynidae, Ceratiidae, Gigantactinidae and Linophrynidae from southern Africa are reviewed since the publication of the book Smiths’ Sea Fishes (1986, 1991). Twenty-three new records of ceratioid anglerfishes are reported for the region, bringing the total to 32. No new taxa are described. The faunal area for southern African deep-sea fishes is expanded from that of Smiths’ Sea Fishes in order to include several literature records and recognize the broad distributions of these fishes through the deep-pelagic Atlantic/Indo-Pacific transit zone. Keys to all families, genera and species, as well as descriptions of all southern African specimens, are provided.     The Principal Pipeline Initiative in Action

    Strong principals are central to improving schools—indeed, leadership is second only to teaching among school-related factors that influence student achievement. Districts struggle, however, to develop a sufficient pool of highly capable principals. While research has identified strategies that are effective in preparing and supporting school leaders, few districts have pulled together a coherent set of strategies to form a pipeline to the principalship.Recognizing the need to improve the supply of high-quality principals, The Wallace Foundation launched the Principal Pipeline Initiative (PPI) in 2011. The goal was to test the proposition that districts could produce a large cadre of strong novice principals by making a concerted effort to implement a set of interrelated policies and practices, and that doing so would positively affect school outcomes. Participating districts focused on implementing four key components:? Adopting standards of practice and performance to guide principal preparation, hiring, evaluation, and support? Improving the quality of preservice preparation for principals? Using selective hiring and placement practices to match principal candidates with schools? Implementing on-the-job evaluation and support for novice principals (those in their first three years on the job)Six large districts received multi-year grants of 8.5millionto8.5 million to 13.25 million from the foundation to cover a portion of the start-up costs of developing a principal pipeline. The districts were selected partly because they had already adopted some policies and practices consistent with the PPI components. The foundation also provided technical assistance. The PPI sought not only to institute, grow, and sustain the key components within each participating district, but also to generate examples that other districts might follow

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The <it>Gpnmb </it>gene encodes a transmembrane protein whose function(s) remain largely unknown. Here, we assess if a mutant allele of <it>Gpnmb </it>confers susceptibility to glaucoma by altering immune functions. DBA/2J mice have a mutant <it>Gpnmb </it>gene and they develop a form of glaucoma preceded by a pigment dispersing iris disease and abnormalities of the immunosuppressive ocular microenvironment.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We find that the <it>Gpnmb </it>genotype of bone-marrow derived cell lineages significantly influences the iris disease and the elevation of intraocular pressure. GPNMB localizes to multiple cell types, including pigment producing cells, bone marrow derived F4/80 positive antigen-presenting cells (APCs) of the iris and dendritic cells. We show that APCs of DBA/2J mice fail to induce antigen induced immune deviation (a form of tolerance) when treated with TGFβ2. This demonstrates that some of the immune abnormalities previously identified in DBA/2J mice result from intrinsic defects in APCs. However, the tested APC defects are not dependent on a mutant <it>Gpnmb </it>gene. Finally, we show that the <it>Gpnmb </it>mediated iris disease does not require elevated IL18 or mature B or T lymphocytes.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results establish a role for <it>Gpnmb </it>in bone marrow derived lineages. They suggest that affects of <it>Gpnmb </it>on innate immunity influence susceptibility to glaucoma in DBA/2J mice.</p

    The evolution of AAOE observed constituents with the polar vortex

    One of the difficulties in determining constituent trends from the ER-2 flight data is the large amount of day to day variability generated by the motion of the polar vortex. To reduce this variability, the observations have been transformed into the conservative (Lagrangian) reference frames consisting of the coordinate pairs, potential temperature (PT) and potential vorticity (PV), or PT and N2O. The requirement of only two independent coordinates rests on the assumption that constituent distributions and their chemical processes are nearly zonal in that coordinate system. Flight data is used everywhere for these transformation except for potential vorticity. Potential vorticity is determined from level flight segments, and NMC PV values during flight dives and takeoffs are combined with flight data in a smooth fashion

    Cavity QED with a Bose-Einstein condensate

    Cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED) describes the coherent interaction between matter and an electromagnetic field confined within a resonator structure, and is providing a useful platform for developing concepts in quantum information processing. By using high-quality resonators, a strong coupling regime can be reached experimentally in which atoms coherently exchange a photon with a single light-field mode many times before dissipation sets in. This has led to fundamental studies with both microwave and optical resonators. To meet the challenges posed by quantum state engineering and quantum information processing, recent experiments have focused on laser cooling and trapping of atoms inside an optical cavity. However, the tremendous degree of control over atomic gases achieved with Bose-Einstein condensation has so far not been used for cavity QED. Here we achieve the strong coupling of a Bose-Einstein condensate to the quantized field of an ultrahigh-finesse optical cavity and present a measurement of its eigenenergy spectrum. This is a conceptually new regime of cavity QED, in which all atoms occupy a single mode of a matter-wave field and couple identically to the light field, sharing a single excitation.     Probabilistic Clustering of Time-Evolving Distance Data

    We present a novel probabilistic clustering model for objects that are represented via pairwise distances and observed at different time points. The proposed method utilizes the information given by adjacent time points to find the underlying cluster structure and obtain a smooth cluster evolution. This approach allows the number of objects and clusters to differ at every time point, and no identification on the identities of the objects is needed. Further, the model does not require the number of clusters being specified in advance -- they are instead determined automatically using a Dirichlet process prior. We validate our model on synthetic data showing that the proposed method is more accurate than state-of-the-art clustering methods. Finally, we use our dynamic clustering model to analyze and illustrate the evolution of brain cancer patients over time

    Comparing Internalization of Appearance Ideals and Appearance-Related Pressures Among Women from the United States, Italy, England, and Australia

    Researchers have observed variation in levels of body image disturbance and eating pathology among women from different Western countries. Examination of cross-cultural differences in the established risk factors (i.e., thin-ideal internalization, muscular-ideal internalization, and appearance pressures from family, peers, and media) for negative outcomes may help to elucidate the prominence of specific risk factors within a given Western society and guide associated interventions. Women from the United States (US), Italy, England, and Australia completed the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-4 (SATAQ-4). Analysis of covariance controlling for age and BMI indicated significant cross-country differences for all SATAQ-4 subscales. Results typically indicated higher levels of appearance-ideal internalization and appearance pressures in the US and lower levels in Italy; however, associated effect sizes were generally small. A medium effect of country was observed for peer-appearance pressures, which were highest in the US compared with all other countries. Repeated-measures analysis of variance and paired samples t tests conducted within each country identified thin-ideal internalization and media appearance pressures as the predominant risk factors for all four countries. Overall, findings suggest more cross-country similarities than differences, and highlight the importance of delivering interventions to address thin-ideal internalization and media appearance pressures among women from Western backgrounds

    The thermal emission of the exoplanets WASP-1b and WASP-2b

    We present a comparative study of the thermal emission of the transiting exoplanets WASP-1b and WASP-2b using the Spitzer Space Telescope. The two planets have very similar masses but suffer different levels of irradiation and are predicted to fall either side of a sharp transition between planets with and without hot stratospheres. WASP-1b is one of the most highly irradiated planets studied to date. We measure planet/star contrast ratios in all four of the IRAC bands for both planets (3.6-8.0um), and our results indicate the presence of a strong temperature inversion in the atmosphere of WASP-1b, particularly apparent at 8um, and no inversion in WASP-2b. In both cases the measured eclipse depths favor models in which incident energy is not redistributed efficiently from the day side to the night side of the planet. We fit the Spitzer light curves simultaneously with the best available radial velocity curves and transit photometry in order to provide updated measurements of system parameters. We do not find significant eccentricity in the orbit of either planet, suggesting that the inflated radius of WASP-1b is unlikely to be the result of tidal heating. Finally, by plotting ratios of secondary eclipse depths at 8um and 4.5um against irradiation for all available planets, we find evidence for a sharp transition in the emission spectra of hot Jupiters at an irradiation level of 2 x 10^9 erg/s/cm^2. We suggest this transition may be due to the presence of TiO in the upper atmospheres of the most strongly irradiated hot Jupiters.Comment: 10 pages, submitted to Ap
