Periodic spin textures in a degenerate F=1 Rb spinor Bose gas
We report on the spin textures produced by cooling unmagnetized Rb F=1
spinor gases into the regime of quantum degeneracy. At low temperatures,
magnetized textures form that break translational symmetry and display
short-range periodic magnetic order characterized by one- or two-dimensional
spatial modulations with wavelengths much smaller than the extent of the
quasi-two-dimensional degenerate gas. Spin textures produced upon cooling spin
mixtures with a non-zero initial magnetic quadrupole moment also show
ferromagnetic order that, at low temperature, coexists with the spatially
modulated structure.Comment: 6 pages, revised substantially following reviewer comments and

Growth or decline in the Church of England during the decade of Evangelism: did the Churchmanship of the Bishop matter?
The Decade of Evangelism occupied the attention of the Church of England throughout the 1990s. The present study employs the statistics routinely published by the Church of England in order to assess two matters: the extent to which these statistics suggest that the 43 individual dioceses finished the decade in a stronger or weaker position than they had entered it and the extent to which, according to these statistics, the performance of dioceses led by bishops shaped in the Evangelical tradition differed from the performance of dioceses led by bishops shaped in the Catholic tradition. The data demonstrated that the majority of dioceses were performing less effectively at the end of the decade than at the beginning, in terms of a range of membership statistics, and that the rate of decline varied considerably from one diocese to another. The only exception to the trend was provided by the diocese of London, which experienced some growth. The data also demonstrated that little depended on the churchmanship of the diocesan bishop in shaping diocesan outcomes on the performance indicators employed in the study

A simple, rapid procedure for the isolation of DNA for PCR from Gibberella fujikuroi (Fusarium section Liseola)
The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a method for amplifying specific segments of DNA defined by the small primers used to start the reaction. Using arbitrarily chosen 10-base primers, one can generate random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers (Williams et al. 1991 Nucl. Acids Res. 18:6531-6535). These DNA fragments, separated by electrophoresis in an agarose gel, can be used as markers for studying genetic variation within and among fungal populations
Riparian Meadow Response to Modern Conservation Grazing Management.
Riparian meadows occupy a small proportion of the public lands in the western United States but they provide numerous ecosystem services, including the production of high-quality forage for livestock grazing. Modern conservation management strategies (e.g., reductions in livestock stocking rates and adoption of new riparian grazing standards) have been implemented to better balance riparian conservation and livestock production objectives on publicly managed lands. We examined potential relationships between long-term changes in plant community, livestock grazing pressure and environmental conditions at two spatial scales in meadows grazed under conservation management strategies. Changes in plant community were not associated with either livestock stocking rate or precipitation at the grazing allotment (i.e., administrative) scale. Alternatively, both grazing pressure and precipitation had significant, albeit modest, associations with changes in plant community at the meadow (i.e., ecological site) scale. These results suggest that reductions in stocking rate have improved the balance between riparian conservation and livestock production goals. However, associations between elevation, site wetness, precipitation, and changes in plant community suggest that changing climate conditions (e.g., reduced snowpack and changes in timing of snowmelt) could trigger shifts in plant communities, potentially impacting both conservation and agricultural services (e.g., livestock and forage production). Therefore, adaptive, site-specific management strategies are required to meet grazing pressure limits and safeguard ecosystem services within individual meadows, especially under more variable climate conditions
Flow-Induced Twist-Compression in a Twisted Nematic Cell
Lizhen Ruan and J. Roy Sambles, Physical Review Letters, Vol. 90, article 168701 (2003). "Copyright © 2003 by the American Physical Society."An optical convergent-beam guided-wave technique is used to explore in detail the dynamic flow effects in a twisted nematic cell. During switch-on it is found that the dynamic flow compresses the director twist to regions close to the cell walls. For high fields this twist compression takes the cell far beyond the Mauguin limit and it no longer effectively guides the polarization of the light through the cell. This results in a very fast switch to a transient dark state
Collimated, single-pass atom source from a pulsed alkali metal dispenser for laser-cooling experiments
We have developed an improved scheme for loading atoms into a magneto-optical
trap (MOT) from a directed alkali metal dispenser in < 10^-10 torr ultra-high
vacuum conditions. A current-driven dispenser was surrounded with a cold
absorbing "shroud" held at < 0 C, pumping rubidium atoms not directed into the
MOT. This nearly eliminates background alkali atoms and reduces the detrimental
rise in pressure normally associated with these devices. The system can be
well-described as a current-controlled, rapidly-switched, two-temperature
thermal beam, and was used to load a MOT with 3 x 10^8 atoms.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Trajectory attractors for the Sun-Liu model for nematic liquid crystals in 3D
In this paper we prove the existence of a trajectory attractor (in the sense
of V.V. Chepyzhov and M.I. Vishik) for a nonlinear PDE system coming from a 3D
liquid crystal model accounting for stretching effects. The system couples a
nonlinear evolution equation for the director d (introduced in order to
describe the preferred orientation of the molecules) with an incompressible
Navier-Stokes equation for the evolution of the velocity field u. The technique
is based on the introduction of a suitable trajectory space and of a metric
accounting for the double-well type nonlinearity contained in the director
equation. Finally, a dissipative estimate is obtained by using a proper
integrated energy inequality. Both the cases of (homogeneous) Neumann and
(non-homogeneous) Dirichlet boundary conditions for d are considered.Comment: 32 page
