Engineering directed excitonic energy transfer
We provide an intuitive platform for engineering exciton transfer dynamics.
We show that careful consideration of the spectral density, which describes the
system-bath interaction, leads to opportunities to engineer the transfer of an
exciton. Since excitons in nanostructures are proposed for use in quantum
information processing and artificial photosynthetic designs, our approach
paves the way for engineering a wide range of desired exciton dynamics. We
carefully describe the validity of the model and use experimentally relevant
material parameters to show counter-intuitive examples of a directed exciton
transfer in a linear chain of quantum dots
State Dependence of Stimulus-Induced Variability Tuning in Macaque MT
Behavioral states marked by varying levels of arousal and attention modulate
some properties of cortical responses (e.g. average firing rates or pairwise
correlations), yet it is not fully understood what drives these response
changes and how they might affect downstream stimulus decoding. Here we show
that changes in state modulate the tuning of response variance-to-mean ratios
(Fano factors) in a fashion that is neither predicted by a Poisson spiking
model nor changes in the mean firing rate, with a substantial effect on
stimulus discriminability. We recorded motion-sensitive neurons in middle
temporal cortex (MT) in two states: alert fixation and light, opioid
anesthesia. Anesthesia tended to lower average spike counts, without decreasing
trial-to-trial variability compared to the alert state. Under anesthesia,
within-trial fluctuations in excitability were correlated over longer time
scales compared to the alert state, creating supra-Poisson Fano factors. In
contrast, alert-state MT neurons have higher mean firing rates and largely
sub-Poisson variability that is stimulus-dependent and cannot be explained by
firing rate differences alone. The absence of such stimulus-induced variability
tuning in the anesthetized state suggests different sources of variability
between states. A simple model explains state-dependent shifts in the
distribution of observed Fano factors via a suppression in the variance of gain
fluctuations in the alert state. A population model with stimulus-induced
variability tuning and behaviorally constrained information-limiting
correlations explores the potential enhancement in stimulus discriminability by
the cortical population in the alert state.Comment: 36 pages, 18 figure
Promoting Team-Based Exercise Among African American Breast Cancer Survivors
Physical activity benefits the health and well-being of breast cancer survivors (BCS). Yet, many African American survivors do not routinely exercise and have increased risk of poor outcomes. The purpose of this mixed-method study was to identify motivational factors compelling African American BCS to participate in a 14-week team walking program and to intend to continue exercise after the intervention concluded. Focus groups were held with participants (n = 12) before and after training. Content analysis discovered themes before the intervention: Not wanting to go at it alone, exercise not a life or treatment priority, cancer treatment affected activity, advocates to exercise, and can exercise really help? Four themes postintervention themes included: In the same boat, changed mind-set, improved weight and activity, and overcoming barriers. Physical data verified improvements. Results suggest that a team-based exercise training program may assist in overcoming a sedentary behavior tendency and subsequently improve health among survivors
Survivors Speak: A Qualitative Analysis of Motivational Factors Influencing Breast Cancer SurvivorsтАЩ Participation in a Sprint Distance Triathlon
Aims and Objectives
To examine motivational factors influencing breast cancer survivors to participate in triathlon training, complete a triathlon and maintain an exercise thereafter.
Background
Routine exercise has been shown to improve quality of life and reduce recurrence for breast cancer survivors. Yet physical and psychological factors present barriers for initiating and maintaining an exercise routine. Research is limited in exploring factors of exercise motivation from the survivor\u27s perspective.
Design
Qualitative design using focus groups and individual follow-up phone interviews to explore motivation for exercise initiation and maintenance.
Methods
One to two weeks after completing a triathlon, 11 breast cancer survivors who trained together participated in one of three focus groups to discuss their experience. Five months post triathlon 6 of the 11 participants were successfully contacted and phone interviews were conducted to explore exercise maintenance. Focus groups and interviews were analysed using content and thematic analysis.
Results
Five themes emerged (1) Champion for Exercise, (2) Part of a Team, (3) Everyone Had a Story, (4) Not Really Exercise and (5) What Do We Do Now? Overall, survivors recognised their need for lifestyle change (e.g. moving from a sedentary lifestyle to a more active one). More importantly, they identified the team approach to exercise initiation was crucial in their success in sustaining a behavioural change.
Conclusions
Emphasis needed on developing team exercise training programmes for survivors. Nurses can play a critical role in discussing with survivors, the benefits of exercise initiation and maintenance.
Relevance to clinical practice
Breast cancer survivors are hesitant to initiate routine exercise. Training with women who share a common lived experience increases the likelihood of success. Nurses are in a position to encourage breast cancer survivors to participate in group exercise programmes as a way to improve quality of life
Vision-related symptoms as a clinical feature of chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis? Evidence from the DePaul Symptom Questionnaire
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) is a debilitating disorder, affecting at least 250,000 people in the UK. Marked by debilitating fatigue, its aetiology is poorly understood and diagnosis controversial. A number of symptoms overlap with other illnesses with the result that CFS/ME is commonly misdiagnosed. It is important therefore that significant clinical features are investigated. People diagnosed with CFS/ME consistently report that they experience vision-related symptoms associated with their illness1-3 with some of these reports being verified experimentally. Although vision-related symptoms may represent a significant clinical feature of CFS/ME that could be useful in its diagnosis, they have yet to be included in clinical guidelines
New Teacher Perceptions of Induction Programs: A Study of Open-Ended Commentary
The purpose of this study was to learn if teachers believe their experiences with the Ohio Resident Educator Program (OREP) improved their ability to meet the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession (OSTP). Two hundred forty-five teachers voluntarily participated in a thirty-three question Likert-based survey with seven open-ended comment sections. For this study, the researchers analyzed the Likert-based survey responses through basic descriptive analysis and ANOVAs and the 456 comments from the seven open-ended comment sections regarding the seven OSTP standards through grounded theory. The findings indicate that the beginning teachers do not believe the Ohio Resident Educator Program improved their ability to meet these standards. However, they reported their teacher preparation programs, classroom experiences, and mentors, colleagues, and administrators did improve their ability to meet the standards
Effect of magnetic state on the transition in iron: First-principle calculations of the Bain transformation path
Energetics of the fcc () - bcc () lattice transformation by

computational results manifest a relevance of the magnetic order in a scenario
of the - transition and reveal a special role of the Curie
temperature of -Fe, , where a character of the transformation is

the transformation is developed as a lattice instability whereas for
it follows a standard mechanism of creation and growth of an embryo of the new

Enhancement of intracellular ╬│-tocopherol levels in cytokine-stimulated C3H 10T1/2 fibroblasts: relation to NO synthesis, isoprostane formation, and tocopherol oxidation
Stimulation of C3H 10T1/2 murine fibroblasts with interferon-gamma(IFN) and bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) generates reactive oxygen and nitrogen species leading to DNA damage, lipid oxidation, and tocopherol oxidation. The tocopherols possess unique chemical and biological properties that suggest they have important roles related to intracellular defense against radical-mediated damage.Despite increased levels of reactive oxidants and decreased media tocopherol, cellular levels of gamma-tocopherol, but not alpha-tocopherol, were observed to increase significantly when cells were treated with IFN/LPS. Inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) synthesis by a specific inhibitor of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) increased both intracellular alpha-tocopherol and gamma-tocopherol concentrations, but did not significantly alter the reduction in media tocopherol levels caused by IFN/LPS treatment. Both exposure to exogenous NO and cellular synthesis of NO in cell culture increased media levels of 8-epi-prostaglandin F2alpha, a marker of oxidative lipid damage, whereas inhibition of endogenous NO synthesis reduced media 8-epi-prostaglandin F2alpha formation to control levels.Elevated intracellular levels of gamma-tocopherol in response to the cellular inflammatory state may indicate that it serves a unique role in minimizing cellular damage resulting from endogenous NO synthesis. Results of the current study suggest that NO is an important mediator of damage within the cell, as well as in the oxidation of both alpha- and gamma-tocopherols. The paradoxical increase in cellular tocopherol associated with the induction of NO synthesis may indicate either enhanced cellular transport/decreased export for tocopherols or recruitment of free tocopherol from tocopherol storage molecules
