Phase transition in Stabilizer Entropy and efficient purity estimation
Stabilizer Entropy (SE) quantifies the spread of a state in the basis of
Pauli operators. It is a computationally tractable measure of
non-stabilizerness and thus a useful resource for quantum computation. SE can
be moved around a quantum system, effectively purifying a subsystem from its
complex features. We show that there is a phase transition in the residual
subsystem SE as a function of the density of non-Clifford resources. This phase
transition has important operational consequences: it marks the onset of a
subsystem purity estimation protocol that requires
many queries to a circuit containing
non-Clifford gates that prepares the state from a stabilizer state. Thus, for
, it estimates the purity with polynomial resources and, for
highly entangled states, attains an exponential speed-up over the known
state-of-the-art algorithms
Il P.Herc. 986: un testo etico di Filodemo?
The authors, who are preparing the first complete edition of P.Herc. 986, offer a rereading of fr. 24 Orazi, which was previously published only in part by Crönert. In this fragment, they have recognized a reference to, or a quotation of, Epicurus' thought about comic poetry, with a possible allusion to Menander. This detail, when taken with other considerations, opens stimulating new possibilities for its the interpretation of the text
Low-frequency, high-power ultrasound treatment at different pressures for olive paste: Effects on olive oil yield and quality.
Abstract Ultrasound technology was employed to test its action on the extraction of olive oil at the industrial scale. Because of its mechanical effects, ultrasound waves were applied to the olive paste, between the crushing and malaxing operations. Comparative experiments were performed between traditional extraction processes and the innovative extraction process, with the addition of the ultrasound treatment. Different levels of pressure were tested on olive paste, using four different olive cultivars. Pressure level played an important role in olive oil extractability. When ultrasound was subjected to olive paste with a pressure of about 3.5 bar, there was a significant increase of extractability compared to the traditional process. On the other hand, there was no significant effect between ultrasound treatment and traditional technology on extractability when ultrasound at a pressure level of 1.7 bar was used
The Zooxanthellate Jellyfish Holobiont Cassiopea andromeda, a Source of Soluble Bioactive Compounds
Cassiopea andromeda (Forsskål, 1775), commonly found across the Indo-Pacific Ocean, the Red Sea, and now also in the warmest areas of the Mediterranean Sea, is a scyphozoan jellyfish that hosts autotrophic dinoflagellate symbionts (family Symbiodiniaceae). Besides supplying photosynthates to their host, these microalgae are known to produce bioactive compounds as long- chain unsaturated fay acids, polyphenols, and pigments, including carotenoids, with antioxidant properties and other beneficial biological activities. By the present study, a fractionation method was applied on the hydroalcoholic extract from two main body parts (oral arms and umbrella) of the jellyfish holobiont to obtain an improved biochemical characterization of the obtained fractions from the two body parts. The composition of each fraction (i.e., proteins, phenols, fay acids, and pigments) as well as the associated antioxidant activity were analyzed. The oral arms proved richer in zooxanthellae and pigments than the umbrella. The applied fractionation method was effective in separating pigments and fay acids into a lipophilic fraction from proteins and pigment–protein complexes. Therefore, the C. andromeda–dinoflagellate holobiont might be considered as a promising natural source of multiple bioactive compounds produced through mixotrophic metabolism, which are of interest for a wide range of biotechnological applications
Contralateral prophylactic mastectomy: What should not be forgotten to improve communication between clinicians and patients!
The rationale for CPM in a patient who has had breast cancer is to reduce the risk of contralateral breast cancer (CBC) and possibly improve survival and quality of life. Other reasons for undergoing a CPM include relative ease of follow-up, reduction of anxiety for occurrence of a second breast cancer, and desire for symmetry that can be achieved with bilateral mastectomies and reconstruction
Penile cancer metastasizing to the breast: a case report
BACKGROUND:
Penile cancer is a relatively uncommon cancer in developed nations. Metastatic disease is rare, but lymphatic or vascular spreading has been previously reported to the liver, lungs, bones, brain, heart and skin.
CASE PRESENTATION:
We report a case of a 49-year-old white man with a penile squamous cell carcinoma previously treated with partial penectomy and bilateral inguinal lymph node dissection, followed by adjuvant therapy. Three years after treatment, the primitive neoplasm metastasized to the breast, presenting as a painful lump. Differentials of a secondary versus a malignant primary tumor were considered and in view of a diagnostic dilemma the lesion was excised.
CONCLUSIONS:
This case is unusual in its site of metastatic progression as well as in its pattern of clinical presentation. Awareness of such a condition by physicians is mandatory in order to make an early diagnosis and start prompt and correct therapeutic planning
