Integration Maintenance Program Evaluation Part 1: Report of Findings for the Village of Park Forest, Illinois

    Get PDF
This report presents an evaluation of the Park Forest Integration Maintenance Program. The report was conducted at the request of the Village Board of Trustees to aid them in evaluating and directing future policy regarding the Program. This report is not seen as a public relations document but as a working document for the Board and Village staff. As such it assumes a working knowledge of terms such as integration maintenance and affirmative marketing as well as knowledge of the basic history of the Program. This is not to say that there is no statement by the researchers of what they understand to be the history of the Program -- such a statement is an essential part of our evaluation. But there is no perfunctory historic overview of the Program such as is usually found at the outset of a public document. Our history is presented as part of the legal evaluation of the Program in Chapter II and is given as a statement of known facts upon which the legal evaluation of the Program will be based

As the academic year of 1945-46 approached, the intensity of activity in preparation for actually opening the school in the fall term became overwhelming. Incredible though it may seem, Ives and Day were able in a period of a few weeks to assemble the nucleus of a faculty, several of whom formed a continuing source of counsel and advice both during the school’s formative years and thereafter. Terrestrial Myriametric Radio Burst Observed by IMAGE and Geotail Satellites

    Get PDF
We report IMAGE and Geotail simultaneous observations of a terrestrial myriametric radio burst (TMRB) detected on August 19, 2001. The TMRB was confined in time (0830-1006 UT) and frequency (12-50 kHz), suggesting a fan beam-like emission pattern from a single discrete source. Analysis and comparisons with existing TMR radiations strongly suggest that the TMRB is a distinct emission perhaps resulting from dayside magnetic reconnection instigated by northward interplanetary field condition

Investigation of MRSA transmission between pigs and the environment following intra-nasal inoculation

Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) ST398 has not been detected in pigs in Ireland. However, other strains of MRSA, including MRSA t002, have been isolated from animals and humans in Ireland. The aim of this study was to determine if nasal colonization of pigs with a non-ST398 strain of MRSA could be reproduced using intra-nasal inoculation and to investigate subsequent transmission of this strain. Six pigs were inoculated intra-nasally with 2 x 109cfu MRSA t002. Six days post-inoculation these pigs were washed and moved to a clean house with 15 unexposed pigs (In-contact group). Another 15 unexposed pigs were added to the vacated house (Environment group)

We report the simultaneous detection of a terrestrial myriametric radio burst (TMRB) by IMAGE and Geotail on 19 August 2001. The TMRB was confined in time (0830-1006 UT) and frequency (12-50kHz). Comparisons with all known nonthermal myriametric radiation components reveal that the TMRB might be a distinct radiation with a source that is unrelated to the previously known radiation. Considerations of beaming from spin-modulation analysis and observing satellite and source locations suggest that the TMRB may have a fan beamlike radiation pattern emitted by a discrete, dayside source located along the poleward edge of magnetospheric cusp field lines. TMRB responsiveness to IMF Bz and By orientations suggests that a possible source of the TMRB could be due to dayside magnetic reconnection instigated by northward interplanetary field condition

A novel MC1R allele for black coat colour reveals the Polynesian ancestry and hybridization patterns of Hawaiian feral pigs

Pigs (Sus scrofa) have played an important cultural role in Hawaii since Polynesians first introduced them in approximately AD 1200. Additional varieties of pigs were introduced following Captain Cook’s arrival in Hawaii in 1778 and it has been suggested that the current pig population may descend primarily, or even exclusively, from European pigs. Although populations of feral pigs today are an important source of recreational hunting on all of the major islands, they also negatively impact native plants and animals. As a result, understanding the origins of these feral pig populations has significant ramifications for discussions concerning conservation management, identity and cultural continuity on the islands. Here, we analysed a neutral mitochondrial marker and a functional nuclear coat colour marker in 57 feral Hawaiian pigs. Through the identification of a new mutation in the MC1R gene that results in black coloration, we demonstrate that Hawaiian feral pigs are mostly the descendants of those originally introduced during Polynesian settlement, though there is evidence for some admixture. As such, extant Hawaiian pigs represent a unique historical lineage that is not exclusively descended from feral pigs of European originPeer reviewe

Transcriptome Atlases of Mouse Brain Reveals Differential Expression Across Brain Regions and Genetic Backgrounds

Mouse models play a crucial role in the study of human behavioral traits and diseases. Variation of gene expression in brain may play a critical role in behavioral phenotypes, and thus it is of great importance to understand regulation of transcription in mouse brain. In this study, we analyzed the role of two important factors influencing steady-state transcriptional variation in mouse brain. First we considered the effect of assessing whole brain vs. discrete regions of the brain. Second, we investigated the genetic basis of strain effects on gene expression. We examined the transcriptome of three brain regions using Affymetrix expression arrays: whole brain, forebrain, and hindbrain in adult mice from two common inbred strains (C57BL/6J vs. NOD/ShiLtJ) with eight replicates for each brain region and strain combination. We observed significant differences between the transcriptomes of forebrain and hindbrain. In contrast, the transcriptomes of whole brain and forebrain were very similar. Using 4.3 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms identified through whole-genome sequencing of C57BL/6J and NOD/ShiLtJ strains, we investigated the relationship between strain effect in gene expression and DNA sequence similarity. We found that cis-regulatory effects play an important role in gene expression differences between strains and that the cis-regulatory elements are more often located in 5′ and/or 3′ transcript boundaries, with no apparent preference on either 5′ or 3′ ends

Dysregulated protocadherin-pathway activity as an intrinsic defect in induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cortical interneurons from subjects with schizophrenia.

We generated cortical interneurons (cINs) from induced pluripotent stem cells derived from 14 healthy controls and 14 subjects with schizophrenia. Both healthy control cINs and schizophrenia cINs were authentic, fired spontaneously, received functional excitatory inputs from host neurons, and induced GABA-mediated inhibition in host neurons in vivo. However, schizophrenia cINs had dysregulated expression of protocadherin genes, which lie within documented schizophrenia loci. Mice lacking protocadherin-α showed defective arborization and synaptic density of prefrontal cortex cINs and behavioral abnormalities. Schizophrenia cINs similarly showed defects in synaptic density and arborization that were reversed by inhibitors of protein kinase C, a downstream kinase in the protocadherin pathway. These findings reveal an intrinsic abnormality in schizophrenia cINs in the absence of any circuit-driven pathology. They also demonstrate the utility of homogenous and functional populations of a relevant neuronal subtype for probing pathogenesis mechanisms during development
