Measurement of the Spin--Dependence of the pbar p Interaction at the AD-Ring
An internal polarized hydrogen storage cell gas target is proposed for the
AD--ring to determine for the first time the two total spin--dependent cross
sections and at antiproton beam energies in the range
from 50 to 200 MeV. The data will allow the definition of the optimum working
parameters of a dedicated Antiproton Polarizer Ring (APR), which has recently
been proposed by the PAX collaboration for the new Facility for Antiproton and
Ion Research (FAIR) at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany. The availability of an
intense beam of polarized antiprotons will provide access to a wealth of
single-- and double--spin observables, thereby opening a new window to QCD
transverse spin physics. The physics program proposed by the PAX collaboration
includes a first measurement of the transversity distribution of the valence
quarks in the proton, a test of the predicted opposite sign of the
Sivers--function, related to the quark distribution inside a transversely
polarized nucleon, in Drell--Yan (DY) as compared to semi--inclusive Deep
Inelastic Scattering, and a first measurement of the moduli and the relative
phase of the time--like electric and magnetic form factors of the
proton
Polarized sea measurements at JPARC
Large double spin-asymmetries can be foreseen for Drell-Yan production in scattering at JPARC energies. The sign of the asymmetries can be used to

Coalgebraic Semantics for Timed Processes
We give a coalgebraic formulation of timed processes and their operational semantics. We model time by a monoid called a “time domain”, and we model processes by “timed transition systems”, which amount to partial monoid actions of the time domain or, equivalently, coalgebras for an “evolution comonad ” generated by the time domain. All our examples of time domains satisfy a partial closure property, yielding a distributive law of a monad for total monoid actions over the evolution comonad, and hence a distributive law of the evolution comonad over a dual comonad for total monoid actions. We show that the induced coalgebras are exactly timed transition systems with delay operators. We then integrate our coalgebraic formulation of time qua timed transition systems into Turi and Plotkin’s formulation of structural operational semantics in terms of distributive laws. We combine timing with action via the more general study of the combination of two arbitrary sorts of behaviour whose operational semantics may interact. We give a modular account of the operational semantics for a combination induced by that of each of its components. Our study necessitates the investigation of products of comonads. In particular, we characterise when a monad lifts to the category of coalgebras for a product comonad, providing constructions with which one can readily calculate. Chemically Sensitive Polymer Coatings For SH-Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors for the Detection of Benzene in Water
Polymer-coated shear horizontal surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) sensors are investigated for the detection of benzene in aqueous samples. The SH-SAW sensors using three-layer geometry have a single polymer sensing layer which absorbs the analyte and interacts with the surface wave. Several polymers are identified as potential improvements over current sensing films based on glass transition temperature and Hildebrand solubility parameter. The polymers investigated in this work include poly (methyl acrylate) (PMA), poly (butyl acrylate) (PBA), poly (ethylene co-vinyl acetate) (PEVA), bisphenol-A poly (dimethylsiloxane) (BPA PDMS), and bisphenol-A poly (hexamethyltrisiloxane) (BPA HMTS).
The polymers are spin coated on a lithium tantalate (LiTaO3) SH-SAW dual delay-line device at thicknesses between 0.3 µm and 1.0 µm. Each film\u27s thickness is measured and the film is exposed to multiple concentrations of the aromatic hydrocarbons benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTEX). The added mass and viscoelastic changes in the sensing layer result in a change in center frequency and acoustic loss of the device. The frequency change is measured and used to determine sensitivity of the coated sensor to each analyte.
BPA PDMS and BPA HMTS show larger sensitivities to each of the BTEX analytes than PBA, PMA, or PEVA. However, both BPA PDMS and BPA HMTS were observed to lose sensitivity during the aging process. It is shown that the aging effect on BPA HMTS can be mitigated by baking the film after it is applied to the device
Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to single-inclusive hadron production in transversely polarized p-p and pbar-p collisions
We present a calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the
partonic cross sections contributing to single-inclusive high-p_T hadron
production in collisions of transversely polarized hadrons. We use a recently
developed projection technique for treating the phase space integrals in the
presence of the cos(2Phi) azimuthal-angular dependence associated with
transverse polarization. Our phenomenological results show that the double-spin
asymmetry A_TT^pi for neutral-pion production is expected to be very small for
polarized pp scattering at RHIC and could be much larger for the proposed
experiments with an asymmetric pbar-p collider at the GSIComment: 7 pages, 5 figure
PERSPECTIVES FOR POLARIZED ANTIPROTONS
Polarized antiprotons would open a new window in hadron physics providing access to a wealth of single and double spin observables in proton-antiproton interactions. The PAX Collaboration aims to perform the first ever measurement of the spin-dependence of the proton-antiproton cross section at the AD ring at CERN. The spin-dependence of the cross section could in principle be exploited by the spin-filtering technique for the production of a polarized antiproton beam. As a preparatory phase to the experimentation at AD, the PAX Collaboration has initiated a series of dedicated studies with protons at the COSY-ring in Juelich (Germany), aimed at the commissioning of the experimental apparatus and confirmation of the predictions for spin-filtering with protons

The growing interest of people in science events, the projects supported by
the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research to foster STEM
teaching in different levels of the education system and the introduction of
modern physics in some Italian high schools, contributed to the strengthening
of interaction between schools, universities and research centers. This
interaction realized in dedicated activities characterized by innovative
communication and education strategies.This paper presents the events of
science dissemination organized in the last years by the University of Ferrara
and the National Institute for Nuclear Physics taking into account some case
