    Response of male and female domestic chicks to change in the number (quantity) of imprinting objects

    When facing two sets of imprinting objects of different numerousness, domestic chicks prefer to approach the larger one. Given that choice for familiar and novel stimuli in imprinting situations is known to be affected by the sex of the animals, we investigated how male and female domestic chicks divide the time spent in the proximity of a familiar versus an unfamiliar number of objects, and how animals interact (by pecking) with these objects. We confirmed that chicks discriminate among the different numerousnesses, but we also showed that females and males behave differently, depending on the degree of familiarity of the objects. When objects in the testing sets were all familiar, females equally explored both sets and pecked at all objects individually. Males instead selectively approached the familiar numerousness and pecked more at it. When both testing sets comprised familiar as well as novel objects, both males and females approached the larger numerousness of familiar objects. However, chicks directed all their pecks toward the novel object within the set. Differences in the behavior of males and females can be accounted for in terms of sex difference in the motivation to reinstate social contact with the familiar objects and to explore novel ones, likely associated with the ecology and the social structure of the species before domestication

    A Non-parametric Semi-supervised Discretization Method

    Semi-supervised classification methods aim to exploit labelled and unlabelled examples to train a predictive model. Most of these approaches make assumptions on the distribution of classes. This article first proposes a new semi-supervised discretization method which adopts very low informative prior on data. This method discretizes the numerical domain of a continuous input variable, while keeping the information relative to the prediction of classes. Then, an in-depth comparison of this semi-supervised method with the original supervised MODL approach is presented. We demonstrate that the semi-supervised approach is asymptotically equivalent to the supervised approach, improved with a post-optimization of the intervals bounds location

    Proximal ulna comminuted fractures: Fixation using a double-plating technique

    SummaryIntroductionComminuted fractures of the proximal ulna are severe injuries often associated with bone and ligament injuries of the elbow joint (Monteggia lesion, radial head fractures, dislocation of the elbow). The treatment of these fractures is very demanding and the functional results often fairly mediocre due to associated injuries. Based on a single-center retrospective study, we report the results of the treatment of these fractures fixed using a double-plate technique. The aim was to evaluate the feasibility and reliability of this fixation mode and to compare it with other fractures series using a single plate fixation (in terms of bone union, elbow joint function, and complications stemming from the plates).Patients and methodsEighteen patients sustained a comminuted proximal ulna fracture between 2002 and 2006. The fractures were associated in five cases with a Monteggia type lesion, in two cases with elbow dislocation, and in four cases with a Mason 3 radial head fracture. Four patients had an open fracture. These comminuted ulna fractures included nine Mayo Clinic IIIB fractures. Bone fixation was performed with two third-cylinder tubular plates, one plate on each side of the proximal ulna. This allows more versatile solutions for screw insertion. Functional assessment (according to Broberg and Morrey) and radiological evaluation (bone healing) were provided at 6 months and at the longest follow-up by an independent surgeon.ResultsSixteen of 18 patients achieved bone union. No septic complications occurred and no hardware removal was required on patient request. In 67% of the cases, the Morrey score indicated excellent or good results with a mean score of 82.DiscussionThere are no reports in the literature on the technical point of fixation concerning complex fractures of the ulna. Two plates mean the possibility of twice the number of screw insertions for epiphyseal reconstruction . This fixation remains easy to perform and provides stable anatomic reconstruction of the ulna.Level of evidenceLevel IV. Retrospective study

    Short-range repulsion and isospin dependence in the KN system

    The short-range properties of the KN interaction are studied within the meson-exchange model of the Juelich group. Specifically, dynamical explanations for the phenomenological short-range repulsion, required in this model for achieving agreement with the empirical KN data, are explored. Evidence is found that contributions from the exchange of a heavy scalar-isovector meson (a_0(980)) as well as from genuine quark-gluon exchange processes are needed. Taking both mechanisms into account a satisfactory description of the KN phase shifts can be obtained without resorting to phenomenological pieces.Comment: 26 pages, 5 figure

    The Excitation of Extended Red Emission: New Constraints on its Carrier From HST Observations of NGC 7023

    The carrier of the dust-associated photoluminescence process causing the extended red emission (ERE) in many dusty interstellar environments remains unidentified. Several competing models are more or less able to match the observed broad, unstructured ERE band. We now constrain the character of the ERE carrier further by determining the wavelengths of the radiation that initiates the ERE. Using the imaging capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope, we have resolved the width of narrow ERE filaments appearing on the surfaces of externally illuminated molecular clouds in the bright reflection nebula NGC 7023 and compared them with the depth of penetration of radiation of known wavelengths into the same cloud surfaces. We identify photons with wavelengths shortward of 118 nm as the source of ERE initiation, not to be confused with ERE excitation, however. There are strong indications from the well-studied ERE in the Red Rectangle nebula and in the high-|b| Galactic cirrus that the photon flux with wavelengths shortward of 118 nm is too small to actually excite the observed ERE, even with 100% quantum efficiency. We conclude, therefore, that ERE excitation results from a two-step process. While none of the previously proposed ERE models can match these new constraints, we note that under interstellar conditions most polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules are ionized to the di-cation stage by photons with E > 10.5 eV and that the electronic energy level structure of PAH di-cations is consistent with fluorescence in the wavelength band of the ERE.     Crystal structures and freezing of dipolar fluids

    We investigate the crystal structure of classical systems of spherical particles with an embedded point dipole at T=0. The ferroelectric ground state energy is calculated using generalizations of the Ewald summation technique. Due to the reduced symmetry compared to the nonpolar case the crystals are never strictly cubic. For the Stockmayer (i.e., Lennard-Jones plus dipolar) interaction three phases are found upon increasing the dipole moment: hexagonal, body-centered orthorhombic, and body-centered tetragonal. An even richer phase diagram arises for dipolar soft spheres with a purely repulsive inverse power law potential ∌r−n\sim r^{-n}. A crossover between qualitatively different sequences of phases occurs near the exponent n=12n=12. The results are applicable to electro- and magnetorheological fluids. In addition to the exact ground state analysis we study freezing of the Stockmayer fluid by density-functional theory.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Magnetic properties of Gd_xY_{1-x}Fe_2Zn_{20}: dilute, large, S\textbf {S} moments in a nearly ferromagnetic Fermi liquid

    Single crystals of the dilute, rare earth bearing, pseudo-ternary series, Gd_xY_{1-x}Fe_2Zn_{20} were grown out of Zn-rich solution. Measurements of magnetization, resistivity and heat capacity on Gd_xY_{1-x}Fe_2Zn_{20} samples reveal ferromagnetic order of Gd^{3+} local moments across virtually the whole series (x≄0.02x \geq 0.02). The magnetic properties of this series, including the ferromagnetic ordering, the reduced saturated moments at base temperature, the deviation of the susceptibilities from Curie-Weiss law and the anomalies in the resistivity, are understood within the frame work of dilute, S\textbf {S} moments (Gd^{3+}) embedded in a nearly ferromagnetic Fermi liquid (YFe_2Zn_{20}). The s-d model is employed to further explain the variation of TCT_{\mathrm{C}} with x as well as the temperature dependences of of the susceptibilities

    A DG algebras AA over a field kk with H(A)H(A) connected and H<0(A)=0H_{<0}(A)=0 has a unique up to isomorphism DG module KK with H(K)≅kH(K)\cong k. It is proved that if H(A)H(A) is degreewise finite, then RHom_A(?,K): D^{df}_{+}(A)^{op} \equiv D_{df}^{+}}(RHom_A(K,K)) is an exact equivalence of derived categories of DG modules with degreewise finite-dimensional homology. It induces an equivalences of Dbdf(A)opD^{df}_{b}(A)^{op} and the category of perfect DG RHomA(K,K)RHom_A(K,K)-modules, and vice-versa. Corresponding statements are proved also when H(A)H(A) is simply connected and H<0(A)=0H^{<0}(A)=0.Comment: 33 page
