    The Comstar D/3 gain degradation experiment

    The results of gain degradation measurements using the Comstar D/3 19.04 GHz beacon are reported. This experiment utilized 0.6 and 5 m aperture antennas aligned along the same propagation path to examine propagation effects which are related to the antenna aperture size. Sample data for clear air, scintillation in clear air, and precipitation fading are presented. Distributions of the received signal levels and variances for both antennas are also presented

    Dust properties in M31.I.Basic properties and a discussion on age-dependent dust heating

    Context. Spitzer Space Telescope observations and dust emission models are used to discuss the distribution of dust and its characteristics in M31. Together with GALEX FUV, NUV, and SDSS images we studied the age dependence of the dust heating process. Methods.Spitzer IRAC/MIPS maps of M31 were matched together and compared to dust emission models allowing to constrain the dust mass, the intensity of the mean radiation field, the abundance of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) particles. The total infrared emission (TIR) was analyzed in function of UV and Optical colors and compared to predictions of models which consider the age-dependent dust heating. Results. We demonstrate that cold-dust component emission dominates the infrared spectral energy distribution of M31. The mean intensity of the radiation field heating the dust is low (typically U<2, where U=1 is the value in the solar surrounding). Due to the lack of submillimetric measurements the dust mass (M_{dust}) is only weakly constrained by the infrared spectrum. We show that across the spiral-ring structure of M31 a fraction >3% of the total dust mass is in PAHs. UV and optical colors are correlated to (TIR/FUV) ratios in \sim 670 pc-sized regions overall the disk of M31, although deviating from the IRX-beta relationship for starburst galaxies. We derived that in 83% of the regions analyzed across the 10kpc ring more than 50% of the energy absorbed by the dust is rediated at \lambda > 4000 \AA and that dust in M31 appears mainly heated by populations a few Gyr old even across the star-forming ring. The attenuation is varying radially peaking near 10kpc and decreasing faster in the inner regions of M31 than in the outer regions.     On the Nature of Star Formation at Large Galactic Radii

    We have compared far-ultraviolet (FUV), near-ultraviolet (NUV), and Halpha measurements for star forming regions in 21 galaxies, in order to characterise the properties of their discs at radii beyond the main optical radius (R25). In our representative sample of extended and non-extended UV discs we find that half of the extended UV discs also exhibit extended Halpha emission. We find that extended UV discs fall into two categories, those with a sharp truncation in the Halpha disc close to the optical edge (R25), and those with extended emission in Halpha as well as in the ultraviolet. Although most galaxies with strong Halpha truncations near R25 show a significant corresponding falloff in UV emission (factor 10--100), the transition tends to be much smoother than in Halpha, and significant UV emission often extends well beyond this radius, confirming earlier results by Thilker et al. (2007) and others. After correcting for dust attenuation the median fraction of total FUV emission from regions outside of R25 is 1.7%, but it can be as high as 35% in the most extreme cases. The corresponding fractions of Halpha emission are approximately half as large on average. This difference reflects both a slightly lower ratio of Halpha to UV emission in the HII regions in the outer discs, as well as a lower fraction of star clusters showing HII regions. Most HII regions in the extended disc have fluxes consistent with small numbers of ionising O-type stars, and this poor sampling of the upper initial mass function in small clusters can probably account for the differences in the emission properties, consistent with earlier conclusions by Zaritsky & Christlein (2007), without needing to invoke a significant change in the stellar IMF itself. Consistent Ha/FUV ratios and brightest HII region to total Halpha fluxes in the inner and extended discs across our whole galaxy sample demonstrate no evidence for a change in the cluster luminosity function or the IMF in the low gas density outer disc.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 21 Pages, 13 Figures, 2 Table

    Competing Demands for Time and Self-Care Behaviors, Processes of Care, and Intermediate Outcomes Among People With Diabetes: Translating Research Into Action for Diabetes (TRIAD)

    ObjectiveTo determine whether competing demands for time affect diabetes self-care behaviors, processes of care, and intermediate outcomes.Research design and methodsWe used survey and medical record data from 5,478 participants in Translating Research Into Action for Diabetes (TRIAD) and hierarchical regression models to examine the cross-sectional associations between competing demands for time and diabetes outcomes, including self-management, processes of care, and intermediate health outcomes.ResultsFifty-two percent of participants reported no competing demands, 7% reported caregiving responsibilities only, 36% reported employment responsibilities only, and 6% reported both caregiving and employment responsibilities. For both women and men, employment responsibilities (with or without caregiving responsibilities) were associated with lower rates of diabetes self-care behaviors, worse processes of care, and, in men, worse HbA(1c).ConclusionsAccommodations for competing demands for time may promote self-management and improve the processes and outcomes of care for employed adults with diabetes

    Gas Emission Spectrum in the Irr Galaxy IC 10

    Spectroscopic long-slit observations of the dwarf Irr galaxy IC 10 were conducted at the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope with the SCORPIO focal reducer. The ionized-gas emission spectra in the regions of intense current star formation were obtained for a large number of regions in IC 10. The relative abundances of oxygen, N+, and S+ in about twenty HII regions and in the synchrotron superbubble were estimated. We found that the galaxy-averaged oxygen abundance is 12 + log(O/H) = 8.17 +- 0.35 and the metallicity is Z = 0.18 +- 0.14 Z_sun. Our abundances estimated from the strong emission lines are found to be more reliable than those obtained by comparing diagnostic diagrams with photoionization models.Comment: Abridged; accepted in Astronomy Letter

    Hodge Theory on Metric Spaces

    Hodge theory is a beautiful synthesis of geometry, topology, and analysis, which has been developed in the setting of Riemannian manifolds. On the other hand, spaces of images, which are important in the mathematical foundations of vision and pattern recognition, do not fit this framework. This motivates us to develop a version of Hodge theory on metric spaces with a probability measure. We believe that this constitutes a step towards understanding the geometry of vision.     Dithiocarbamates (DTCs) have recently been reported as powerful inhibitors of NF-kappaB activation in a number of cell types. Given the role of this transcription factor in the regulation of gene expression in the inflammatory response, NF-kappaB inhibitors have been suggested as potential therapeutic drugs for inflammatory diseases. We show here that DTCs inhibited both interleukin 2 (IL-2) synthesis and membrane expression of antigens which are induced during T-cell activation. This inhibition, which occurred with a parallel activation of c-Jun transactivating functions and expression, was reflected by transfection experiments at the IL-2 promoter level, and involved not only the inhibition of NF-kappaB-driven reporter activation but also that of nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT). Accordingly, electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSAs) indicated that pyrrolidine DTC (PDTC) prevented NF-kappaB, and NFAT DNA-binding activity in T cells stimulated with either phorbol myristate acetate plus ionophore or antibodies against the CD3-T-cell receptor complex and simultaneously activated the binding of AP-1. Furthermore, PDTC differentially targeted both NFATp and NFATc family members, inhibiting the transactivation functions of NFATp and mRNA induction of NFATc. Strikingly, Western blotting and immunocytochemical experiments indicated that PDTC promoted a transient and rapid shuttling of NFATp and NFATc, leading to their accelerated export from the nucleus of activated T cells. We propose that the activation of an NFAT kinase by PDTC could be responsible for the rapid shuttling of the NFAT, therefore transiently converting the sustained transactivation of this transcription factor that occurs during lymphocyte activation, and show that c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) can act by directly phosphorylating NFATp. In addition, the combined inhibitory effects on NFAT and NF-KB support a potential use of DTCs as immunosuppressants

    Liquid-Solid Phase Transition of the System with Two particles in a Rectangular Box

    We study the statistical properties of two hard spheres in a two dimensional rectangular box. In this system, the relation like Van der Waals equation loop is obtained between the width of the box and the pressure working on side walls. The auto-correlation function of each particle's position is calculated numerically. By this calculation near the critical width, the time at which the correlation become zero gets longer according to the increase of the height of the box. Moreover, fast and slow relaxation processes like α\alpha and β\beta relaxations observed in supper cooled liquid are observed when the height of the box is sufficiently large. These relaxation processes are discussed with the probability distribution of relative position of two particles.Comment: 6 figure
