    Correlation between thermal annealing temperature and Joule-heating based insulator-metal transition in VO2 nanobeams

    Rapid thermal annealing of VO2 nanobeams in an ambient argon environment has been carried out at various temperatures after device fabrication. Our analysis revealed that increasing the annealing temperature from 200??C to 400??C results in the reduction of both ohmic and nanobeam resistances with an appreciable decrease in joule-heating based transition voltage and transition temperature, while samples annealed at 500??C exhibited a conducting rutile-phase like characteristics at room temperature. In addition, these variation trends were explored using a physical model and the results were found to be in agreement with the observed results, thus verifying the model.open2

    Low Frequency and Variability of FLT3 Mutations in Korean Patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia

    FLT3 mutations are common genetic changes, and are reported to have prognostic significance in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The FLT3 internal tandem duplication (ITD) and the D835 activating mutation in the tyrosine kinase domain (TKD) were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the genomic DNA of Korean patients with AML at diagnosis and during follow-up. There were 226 patients with AML enrolled between March 1996 and August 2005. The incidence of ITD and TKD at diagnosis was 13% (29/226) and 3% (6/226). When compared to Western and other Asian patients with AML, Korean patients had a lower frequency by about two-thirds of ITD and TKD. Among the non-M3 cases (N=203), the patients with an ITD had a significantly shorter event-free survival when compared with those without an ITD (p=0.0079). Among 54 relapsed patients, 9 patients had the FLT3 ITD at diagnosis. Six patients demonstrated a reappearance of the ITD and 3 patients remained negative at relapse. One patient, among 45 patients who relapsed, had a negative baseline ITD but acquired a de novo ITD at relapse. There were 101 samples from 93 patients in remission; they were all negative for an ITD. Among 34 patients who failed to achieve a remission, five patients had a persistent ITD and one patient had a de novo ITD. These results support the concept of resistance of FLT3 ITD leukemic clones to chemotherapy. Therefore, effective therapy with FLT3 targeting agents may improve the prognosis of non-M3 AML patients with the FLT3 mutation

    Clinical Benefit of Low Molecular Weight Heparin for ST-segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction Patients Undergoing Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention with Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa Inhibitor

    The efficacy of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) with low dose unfractionated heparin (UFH) during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with or without glycoprotein (Gp) IIb/IIIa inhibitor compared to UFH with or without Gp IIb/IIIa inhibitor has not been elucidated. Between October 2005 and July 2007, 2,535 patients with ST elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing PCI in the Korean Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry (KAMIR) were assigned to either of two groups: a group with Gp IIb/IIIa inhibitor (n=476) or a group without Gp IIb/IIIa inhibitor (n=2,059). These groups were further subdivided according to the use of LMWH with low dose UFH (n=219) or UFH alone (n=257). The primary end points were cardiac death or myocardial infarction during the 30 days after the registration. The primary end point occurred in 4.1% (9/219) of patients managed with LMWH during PCI and Gp IIb/IIIa inhibitor and 10.8% (28/257) of patients managed with UFH and Gp IIb/IIIa inhibitor (odds ratio [OR], 0.290; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.132-0.634; P=0.006). Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) with major bleeding was observed in LMHW and UFH with Gp IIb/IIIa inhibitor (1/219 [0.5%] vs 1/257 [0.4%], P=1.00). For patients with STEMI managed with a primary PCI and Gp IIb/IIIa inhibitor, LMWH is more beneficial than UFH

    Virtual reality-based monitoring test for MCI: A multicenter feasibility study

    ObjectivesAs the significance of the early diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has emerged, it is necessary to develop corresponding screening tools with high ecological validity and feasible biomarkers. Virtual reality (VR)-based cognitive assessment program, which is close to the daily life of the older adults, can be suitable screening tools for MCI with ecological validity and accessibility. Meanwhile, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) has been observed at a low concentration in the older adults with dementia or cognitive decline, indicating its potential as a biomarker of MCI. This study aimed to determine the efficacy and usability of a VR cognitive assessment program and salivary DHEA for screening MCI.MethodsThe VR cognitive assessment program and the traditional Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) test were performed on 12 patients with MCI and 108 healthy older adults. The VR program operates in a situation of caring for a grandchild, and evaluates the memory, attention, visuospatial, and executive functions. An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), a partial correlation analysis, and receiving operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis were conducted for statistical analysis.ResultsAccording to the ANCOVA, no significant difference in MOCA scores was found between the normal and MCI groups (F = 2.36, p = 0.127). However, the VR total score of the MCI group was significantly lower than that of the normal group (F = 8.674, p = 0.004). There was a significant correlation between the MOCA and VR scores in the total and matched subdomain scores. The ROC curve analysis also showed a larger area under the curve (AUC) for the VR test (0.765) than for the MOCA test (0.598), and the sensitivity and specificity of the VR program were 0.833 and 0.722, respectively. Salivary DHEA was correlated with VR total (R2 = 0.082, p = 0.01) and attention scores (R2 = 0.086, p = 0.009).ConclusionThe VR cognitive test was as effective as the traditional MOCA test in the MCI classification and safe enough for older adults to perform, indicating its potential as a diagnostic tool. It has also been shown that salivary DHEA can be used as a biomarker for MCI

    Unravelling the switching mechanisms in electric field induced insulator-metal transitions in VO2 nanobeams

    We studied insulator-metal transitions in VO2 nanobeams for both abrupt and gradual changes in applied electric fields. Based on the observations, the Poole-Frenkel effect explained the abrupt transition, while the gradual case is found to be dominated by the Joule heating phenomenon. We also carried out power model and finite element method based simulations which supported the Joule heating phenomena for gradual transition. An in-principle demonstration of the Poole-Frenkel effect, performed using a square voltage pulse of 1 ?? s duration, further confirms the proposed insulator-metal transition mechanism with a switching time in the order of 100 ns. Finally, conductivity variations introduced via rapid thermal annealing at various temperatures validate the roles of both Joule heating and Poole-Frenkel mechanisms in the transitions.close0

    Postfabrication Annealing Effects on Insulator–Metal Transitions in VO<sub>2</sub> Thin-Film Devices

    In order to investigate the metal–insulator transition characteristics of VO<sub>2</sub> devices annealed in reducing atmosphere after device fabrication at various temperature, electrical, chemical, and thermal characteristics are measured and analyzed. It is found that the sheet resistance and the insulator–metal transition point, induced by both voltage and thermal, decrease when the devices are annealed from 200 to 500 °C. The V 2p<sub>3/2</sub> peak variation in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization verifies the reduction of thin-films. A decrease of the transition temperature from voltage hysteresis measurements further endorse the reducing effects of the annealing on VO<sub>2</sub> thin-film

    Colloidal Synthesis of SnSe Nanocolumns through Tin Precursor Chemistry and Their Optoelectrical Properties

    Through tin precursor chemistry, SnSe nanocrystals were phase-selectively prepared. Monomeric N-heterocyclic stannylene, [Me<sub>2</sub>Si­(N<sup>t</sup>Bu)<sub>2</sub>Sn:], having lone pair electrons, was prepared by a literature method, and it had a direct reactivity toward selenium powder. The resultant dimerized compound with a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio of Sn to Se was used as a precursor to synthesize tin selenides. Thermolysis of the precursor solution in oleylamine resulted in SnSe plates. The oriented attachment of SnSe plates through (100) crystalline planes formed the SnSe nanocolumns, which were characterized by SEM, TEM, PXRD, EDS, and XPS. The indirect band gap of the SnSe nanocolumns was red-shifted, compared with those of SnSe plates. The SnSe nanocolumns showed an increased photocurrent under visible light irradiation. We believe that similar precursor chemistry in this work can be further extended to group IVA elements
