A nonaspherical cell-like 2-dimensional simply connected continuum and related constructions

We prove the existence of a 2-dimensional nonaspherical simply connected cell-like Peano continuum (the space itself was constructed in one of our earlier papers). We also indicate some relations between this space and the well-known Griffiths' space from the 1950's

The shadow of past rivalry: limits of post-1999 dynamism in Greco-Turkish relations

This essay will enquire whether Turkey and Greece could remove their enduring controversies through confidence building measures, mediation and inter-governmental dialogues which were introduced in the post-1999 détente period. The paper will specifically focus on the recent nature of understanding between the two countries and will endeavour to answer the question of whether there is a divergence in the nature of recent cooperative arrangements from those which were concluded in the former periods of détente and each of which were disrupted by succeeding periods of either armed conflict or cold war. The paper contends that the recent nature of Greek-Turkish relations is not problem-free. Yet, the new cooperative environment facilitated by confidence building measures and growing mutual understanding could help resolve the disputes and dispel reservations in the Aegean and Cyprus which have been very central to national security considerations of both Turkey and Greece. From a security perspective, continuation of previous policies towards one another is counterproductive in the post-1999 period. Improvement of a bilateral dialogue under the EU umbrella is detrimental for the defence considerations of both Turkey and Greece

On the singular homology of one class of simply-connected cell-like spaces

In our earlier papers we constructed examples of 2-dimensional nonaspherical simply-connected cell-like Peano continua, called {\sl Snake space}. In the sequel we introduced the functor SC(,)SC(-,-) defined on the category of all spaces with base points and continuous mappings. For the circle S1S^1, the space SC(S1,)SC(S^1, \ast) is a Snake space. In the present paper we study the higher-dimensional homology and homotopy properties of the spaces SC(Z,)SC(Z, \ast) for any path-connected compact spaces ZZ

In our earlier paper (K. Eda, U. Karimov, and D. Repov\v{s}, \emph{A construction of simply connected noncontractible cell-like two-dimensional Peano continua}, Fund. Math. \textbf{195} (2007), 193--203) we introduced a cone-like space SC(Z)SC(Z). In the present note we establish some new algebraic properties of SC(Z)SC(Z)

Yeşilçam Film Posters of the 60s and 70s: Representing Romance

Cinema and movie poster have the most powerful potential of establishing the ethos and mythology of people, and both assume an audience on the premises of a cultural context within which they are produced. So a movie poster contributing to mass communication through designed visual means contains a lot of information about film industry, evolution of design, craftsmanship, and the taste of the artists and society as well as standing for a strong evidence of its time. The decade 1965-1975 is important for Turkish cinema for being the golden years of this industry. Besides all the good memories associated with these posters, they indeed involve the history of Turkish cinema, graphic design as well as Turkish society. The great deal of labour involved, resulting from the poor resources of the period; design elements, typography, composition, the mistakes; all reflect the characteristics of then-Yeşilçam. Going over an archive of posters and with the help of interviews with designers, cinema historians and labourers, the article focuses on the relationship of design with the industry, technology and society. The Yeşilçam movie posters are analyzed through the methods of iconography as well as reception theory. And therefore as well as exploring their graphic and visual characteristics they would be placed in the context of the social life, the conditions of the movie industry in Turkey, the character of Yeşilçam Melodrama and evolution of Turkish movie poster. After a detailed research and observation, four categories are revealed as the most frequently seen types among the Turkish melodrama posters, according to the kind of images in relation to specific themes and concepts and the design schemas they use. These are “star posters”, “beefcake posters”, “phallic woman posters”, and “posters of movement”. The paper goes in detail how these categories are formed and their significance and their relation to the creation of the concept of romance. Keywords: Yeşilçam melodrama; film poster; graphic design; romance</p

    Puffle-Pod Marine Evacuation System (POMES)

The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Evacuation systems have always played a crucial part when designing a transport system. The cornerstone of these systems is to get people to safety in the quickest and safest way possible. When it comes to marine systems, the requirements greatly differ in comparison to those on land and in air. On a day with highly inclement and fierce weather, in the middle of the ocean, getting the crew to safety through a chute or a slide would expose the crew to ferocious danger. Thence, the proposed Puffle-Pod Evacuation System introduces a more protected and secure evacuation without putting the lives of the crew at high risk

    Gaussian Behavior of Quadratic Irrationals

We study the probabilistic behaviour of the continued fraction expansion of a quadratic irrational number, when weighted by some "additive" cost. We prove asymptotic Gaussian limit laws, with an optimal speed of convergence. We deal with the underlying dynamical system associated with the Gauss map, and its weighted periodic trajectories. We work with analytic combinatorics methods, and mainly with bivariate Dirichlet generating functions; we use various tools, from number theory (the Landau Theorem), from probability (the Quasi-Powers Theorem), or from dynamical systems: our main object of study is the (weighted) transfer operator, that we relate with the generating functions of interest. The present paper exhibits a strong parallelism with the methods which have been previously introduced by Baladi and Vall\'ee in the study of rational trajectories. However, the present study is more involved and uses a deeper functional analysis framework.Comment: 39 pages In this second version, we have added an annex that provides a detailed study of the trace of the weighted transfer operator. We have also corrected an error that appeared in the computation of the norm of the operator when acting in the Banach space of analytic functions defined in the paper. Also, we give a simpler proof for Theorem
