Amenable Invariant Random Subgroups
We show that an amenable Invariant Random Subgroup of a locally compact
second countable group lives in the amenable radical. This answers a question
raised in the introduction of the paper "Kesten's Theorem for Invariant Random
Subgroup" by Abert, Glasner and Virag. We also consider, in the opposite
direction, property (T), and prove a similar statement for this property. The
Appendix by Phillip Wesolek proves that the set of amenable subgroups is a
Borel subset in the Chabauty topology.Comment: We added an Appendix by Phillip Wesole
Combinatorial and group-theoretic compactifications of buildings
Let X be a building of arbitrary type. A compactification of the set
Res(X) of spherical residues of X is introduced. We prove that it coincides
with the horofunction compactification of Res(X) endowed with a natural
combinatorial distance which we call the root-distance. Points of
admit amenable stabilisers in Aut(X) and conversely, any amenable subgroup
virtually fixes a point in . In addition, it is shown that, provided
Aut(X)is transitive enough, this compactification also coincides with the
group-theoretic compactification constructed using the Chabauty topology on
closed subgroups of Aut(X). This generalises to arbitrary buildings results
established by Y. Guivarc'h and B. R\'emy in the Bruhat--Tits case
HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis: Mucosal tissue drug distribution of RT inhibitor Tenofovir and entry inhibitor Maraviroc in a humanized mouse model
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) strategies utilizing anti-retroviral drugs show considerable promise for HIV prevention. However there is insufficient pharmacokinetic (PK) data on drug concentrations required for protection at the relevant mucosal tissues where the infection is initiated. Here we evaluated the utility of a humanized mouse model to derive PK data on two leading drugs, the RT inhibitor tenofovir (TFV) and CCR5 inhibitor maraviroc (MVC). Following oral dosing, both the drugs and the intracellular active TFV-diphosphate could be detected in vaginal, rectal and intestinal tissues. The drug exposures (AUC24hr) were found to be higher in vaginal tissue compared to plasma with even higher levels detected in rectal and intestinal tissues. The overall trends of drug concentrations seen in humanized mice reflect those seen in the human thus establishing the utility of this model complementing the present non-human primate (NHP) models for future pre-clinical evaluations of promising HIV PrEP drug candidates
Amenability of actions on the boundary of a building
We prove that the action of the automorphism group of a building on its boundary is topologically amenable. The notion of boundary we use was defined in a previous paper \cite{CL}. It follows from this result that such groups have property (A), and thus satisfy the Novikov conjecture. It may also lead to applications in rigidity theory
Electromagnetic model of sunscreens
Filters can be divided in two types: the chemical ones which are organic molecules that absorb selectively ultraviolet light and the physical ones (such as TiO2) which are inorganic particles that scatter and may absorb some of the UV radiation. The sunscreen quality is given by the sun protection factor (SPF), measured in vivo. In order to avoid long and complicated tests, a quick and simple in vitro method, using a plastic substrate, has been established, which gives an approximation of the SPF. In order to model the sunscreen protection, we had to evaluate the sunscreen distribution. We used an OCT (for Optical Coherence Tomography) device, after having spread a metallic thin on the substrate before applying the sunscreen. Theses images helped us to model the cream transmission on the skin or the plastic substrate, using the differential method which can calculate the scattering of light through a 2D structure. We then compared our results to measurements, but also studied the impact of several particles specifications, such as the size or the material of the particle, or study the effect of the skin hydration on the UV protection.Furthermore, we have compared our results to other calculation methods (Mie scattering or scattering by a set of parallel cylinders) in order to improve the calculation time and try a 3D-method
HIV prophylaxis: an essential role for T cells and adjuvants in recombinant mucosal Lactobacillus acidophilus vaccines
Includes bibliographical references.2016 Fall.Current HIV vaccines have poor efficacy, with inconsistent levels of protection following mucosal HIV exposure. Lactic acid bacteria offer an alternative vaccine vector targeting the primary site of HIV infection, the mucosa. In these studies we evaluated the immunogenicity of several strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus expressing HIV membrane proximal external region (MPER), a portion of HIV envelope that contains broadly neutralizing antibody binding sites. We evaluated MPER-only expressing strains along with strains expressing adjuvants (interleukin-1β or flagellin) to improve immunogenicity against the HIV MPER. We compared the adjuvant strains to the MPER-only strain by oral administration in BALB/c mice to observe these improvements, and in CD40L-/- mice to observe if T cell help was necessary. Some BALB/c animals were also placed on a modified diet supplemented with prebiotic rice bran to observe any influence on vaccine immunogenicity. Resulting antibody responses and interleukin-17 levels were measured by ELISA, and T and B cell levels were measured by flow cytometry. Here we show that the addition of adjuvants, including dietary rice bran, to L. acidophilus vaccine strains improves their immunogenicity against HIV MPER. Our results indicate that anti-MPER IgG and IgA levels, as well as the number of anti-MPER antibody secreting cells, are improved with adjuvants, and that T cell help is required for an effective immune response. These results, combined with the many advantages offered by this lactic acid bacteria vaccine system make L. acidophilus an attractive vaccine vector for primate and human trials
