First steps to understand heat tolerance of temperate maize at adult stage: identification of QTL across multiple environments with connected segregating populations
KEY MESSAGE: Dents were more heat tolerant than Flints. QTL for heat tolerance with respect to grain yield at field conditions were identified considering multiple populations and environments. ABSTRACT: High temperatures have the potential to cause severe damages to maize production. This study aims to elucidate the genetic mechanisms of heat tolerance under field conditions in maize and the genome regions contributing to natural variation. In our study, heat tolerance was assessed on a multi-environment level under non-controlled field conditions for a set of connected intra- and interpool Dent and Flint populations. Our findings indicate that Dent are more heat tolerant during adult stage than Flint genotypes. We identified 11 quantitative trait loci (QTL) including 2 loci for heat tolerance with respect to grain yield. Furthermore, we identified six heat-tolerance and 112 heat-responsive candidate genes colocating with the previously mentioned QTL. To investigate their contribution to the response to heat stress and heat tolerance, differential expression and sequence variation of the identified candidate genes should be subjected to further research. Transport Phenomena and Structuring in Shear Flow of Suspensions near Solid Walls
In this paper we apply the lattice-Boltzmann method and an extension to
particle suspensions as introduced by Ladd et al. to study transport phenomena
and structuring effects of particles suspended in a fluid near sheared solid
walls. We find that a particle free region arises near walls, which has a width
depending on the shear rate and the particle concentration. The wall causes the
formation of parallel particle layers at low concentrations, where the number
of particles per layer decreases with increasing distance to the wall.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figure

Calculation of The Band Gap Energy and Study of Cross Luminescence in Alkaline-Earth Dihalide Crystals
The band gap energy as well as the possibility of cross luminescence
processes in alkaline-earth dihalide crystals have been calculated using the ab
initio Perturbed-Ion (PI) model. The gap is calculated in several ways: as a
difference between one-electron energy eigenvalues and as a difference between
total energies of appropriate electronic states of the crystal, both at the HF
level and with inclusion of Coulomb correlation effects. In order to study the
possibility of ocurrence of cross luminescence in these materials, the energy
difference between the valence band and the upmost core band for some
representative crystals has been calculated. Both calculated band gap energies
and cross luminescence predictions compare very well with the available

Study of Z Boson Pair Production in e+e- Collisions at LEP at \sqrt{s}=189 GeV
The pair production of Z bosons is studied using the data collected by the L3
detector at LEP in 1998 in e+e- collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 189
GeV. All the visible final states are considered and the cross section of this
process is measured to be 0.74 +0.15 -0.14 (stat.) +/- 0.04 (syst.) pb. Final
states containing b quarks are enhanced by a dedicated selection and their
production cross section is found to be 0.18 +0.09 -0.07 (stat.) +/- 0.02
(syst.) pb. Both results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.
Limits on anomalous couplings between neutral gauge bosons are derived from
these measurements
Search for Scalar Leptons in e+e- collisions at \sqrt{s}=189 GeV
We report the result of a search for scalar leptons in e+e- collisions at 189
GeV centre-of-mass energy at LEP. No evidence for such particles is found in a
data sample of 176 pb^{-1}. Improved upper limits are set on the production
cross sections for these new particles. New exclusion contours in the parameter
space of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model are derived, as well as new
lower limits on the masses of these supersymmetric particles. Under the
assumptions of common gaugino and scalar masses at the GUT scale, we set an
absolute lower limit on the mass of the lightest scalar electron of 65.5 Ge
Search for Low Scale Gravity Effects in e+e- Collisions at LEP
Recent theories propose that quantum gravity effects may be observable at LEP
energies via gravitons that couple to Standard Model particles and propagate
into extra spatial dimensions. The associated production of a graviton and a
photon is searched for as well as the effects of virtual graviton exchange in
the processes: e+e- -> gamma gamma, ZZ, WW, mu mu, tau tau, qq and ee No
evidence for this new interaction is found in the data sample collected by the
L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies up to 183 GeV. Limits close to 1
TeV on the scale of this new scenario of quantum gravity are set
