Transport, magnetic, and structural properties of LaCeMnO thin films. Evidence for hole-doping
Cerium-doped manganite thin films were grown epitaxially by pulsed laser
deposition at C and oxygen pressure Pa and were
subjected to different annealing steps. According to x-ray diffraction (XRD)
data, the formation of CeO as a secondary phase could be avoided for
Pa. However, transmission electron microscopy shows the presence
of CeO nanoclusters, even in those films which appear to be single phase in
XRD. With O annealing, the metal-to-insulator transition temperature
increases, while the saturation magnetization decreases and stays well below
the theoretical value for electron-doped LaCeMnO with mixed
Mn/Mn valences. The same trend is observed with decreasing film
thickness from 100 to 20 nm, indicating a higher oxygen content for thinner
films. Hall measurements on a film which shows a metal-to-insulator transition
clearly reveal holes as dominating charge carriers. Combining data from x-ray
photoemission spectroscopy, for determination of the oxygen content, and x-ray
absorption spectroscopy (XAS), for determination of the hole concentration and
cation valences, we find that with increasing oxygen content the hole
concentration increases and Mn valences are shifted from 2+ to 4+. The
dominating Mn valences in the films are Mn and Mn, and only a
small amount of Mn ions can be observed by XAS. Mn and Ce
XAS signals obtained in surface-sensitive total electron yield mode are
strongly reduced in the bulk-sensitive fluorescence mode, which indicates
hole-doping in the bulk for those films which do show a metal-to-insulator

Superconducting thin films of MgB2 on (001)-Si by pulsed laser deposition
Superconducting thin films have been prepared on Si-substrates, using pulsed
laser deposition from a target composed of a mixture of Mg and MgB2 powders.
The films were deposited at room temperature and post-annealed at 600 degrees
C. The zero resistance transition temperatures were 12 K, with an onset
transition temperature of 27 K. Special care has been taken to avoid oxidation
of Mg in the laser plasma and deposited film, by optimizing the background
pressure of Ar gas in the deposition chamber. For this the optical emission in
the visible range from the plasma has been used as indicator. Preventing Mg
from oxidation was found to be essential to obtain superconducting films
Male obesity associated gonadal dysfunction and the role of bariatric surgery
Obesity is an ever growing pandemic and a prevalent problem among men of reproductive age that can both cause and exacerbate male-factor infertility by means of endocrine abnormalities, associated comorbidities, and direct effects on the precision and throughput of spermatogenesis. Robust epidemiologic, clinical, genetic, epigenetic, and preclinical data support these findings. Clinical studies on the impact of medically induced weight loss on serum testosterone concentrations and spermatogenesis is promising but may show differential and unsustainable results. In contrast, literature has demonstrated that weight loss after bariatric surgery is correlated with an increase in serum testosterone concentrations that is superior than that obtained with only lifestyle modifications, supporting a further metabolic benefit from surgery that may be specific to the male reproductive system. The data on sperm and semen parameters is controversial to date. Emerging evidence in the burgeoning field of genetics and epigenetics has demonstrated that paternal obesity can affect offspring metabolic and reproductive phenotypes by means of epigenetic reprogramming of spermatogonial stem cells. Understanding the impact of this reprogramming is critical to a comprehensive view of the impact of obesity on subsequent generations. Furthermore, conveying the potential impact of these lifestyle changes on future progeny can serve as a powerful tool for obese men to modify their behavior. Healthcare professionals treating male infertility and obesity need to adapt their practice to assimilate these new findings to better counsel men about the importance of paternal preconception health and the impact of novel non-medical therapeutic interventions. Herein, we summarize the pathophysiology of obesity on the male reproductive system and emerging evidence regarding the potential role of bariatric surgery as treatment of male obesity-associated gonadal dysfunction
Entrepreneurial sons, patriarchy and the Colonels' experiment in Thessaly, rural Greece
Existing studies within the field of institutional entrepreneurship explore how entrepreneurs influence change in economic institutions. This paper turns the attention of scholarly inquiry on the antecedents of deinstitutionalization and more specifically, the influence of entrepreneurship in shaping social institutions such as patriarchy. The paper draws from the findings of ethnographic work in two Greek lowland village communities during the military Dictatorship (1967–1974). Paradoxically this era associated with the spread of mechanization, cheap credit, revaluation of labour and clear means-ends relations, signalled entrepreneurial sons’ individuated dissent and activism who were now able to question the Patriarch’s authority, recognize opportunities and act as unintentional agents of deinstitutionalization. A ‘different’ model of institutional change is presented here, where politics intersects with entrepreneurs, in changing social institutions. This model discusses the external drivers of institutional atrophy and how handling dissensus (and its varieties over historical time) is instrumental in enabling institutional entrepreneurship
Computer simulation of leadership, consensus decision making and collective behaviour in humans
The aim of this study is to evaluate the reliability of a
crowd simulation model developed by the authors by reproducing Dyer et al.’s experiments(published in Philosophical Transactions in 2009) on human leadership and
consensus decision-making in a computer-based environment.
The theoretical crowd model of the simulation environment is presented, and its results are compared and analysed against Dyer et al.’s original experiments.
It is concluded that the results are 11 largely consistent
with the experiments, which demonstrates the reliability of
the crowd model. Furthermore, the simulation data also reveals several additional new findings, namely:
1) the phenomena of sacrificing accuracy to reach a quicker
consensus decision found in ants colonies was also discovered in the simulation;
2) the ability of reaching consensus in groups has a direct
impact on the time and accuracy of arriving at the target
position;
3) the positions of the informed individuals or leaders
in the crowd could have significant impact on the overall
crowd movement;
4) the simulation also confirmed Dyer et al.’s anecdotal
evidence of the proportion of the leadership in large crowds
and its effect on crowd movement.
The potential applications of these findings are highlighted in the final discussion of this paper
Targets for high repetition rate laser facilities: Needs, challenges and perspectives
A number of laser facilities coming online all over the world promise the capability of high-power laser experiments with shot repetition rates between 1 and 10Ã\u82 Hz. Target availability and technical issues related to the interaction environment could become a bottleneck for the exploitation of such facilities. In this paper, we report on target needs for three different classes of experiments: Dynamic compression physics, electron transport and isochoric heating, and laser-driven particle and radiation sources. We also review some of the most challenging issues in target fabrication and high repetition rate operation. Finally, we discuss current target supply strategies and future perspectives to establish a sustainable target provision infrastructure for advanced laser facilities
Weight loss with bariatric surgery or behaviour modification and the impact on female obesity-related urine incontinence : a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis
Women with obesity are at risk of pelvic floor dysfunction with a 3-fold increased incidence of urge urinary incontinence (UUI) and double the risk of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and European Association of Urology (EAU) recommend that women with a body mass index ≥30 kg/m2 should consider weight loss prior to consideration for incontinence surgery. This systematic review and meta-analysis will assess this recommendation to aid in the counselling of women with obesity-related urinary incontinence (UI). Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System online (MEDLINE), EMBASE, Cochrane, ClinicalTrials.gov, and SCOPUS were systematically and critically appraised for all peer reviewed manuscripts that suitably fulfilled the inclusion criteria established a priori and presented original, empirical data relevant to weight loss intervention in the management of urinary incontinence. Thirty-three studies and their outcomes were meta-analysed. Weight loss interventions were associated in a decreased prevalence in UI (OR 0.222, 95% CI [0.147, 0.336]), SUI (OR 0.354, 95% CI [0.256, 0.489]), UUI (OR 0.437, 95% CI [0.295, 0.649]) and improved quality of life (PFDI-20, SMD -0.774 (95% CI [−1.236, −0.312]). This systematic review and meta-analysis provide evidence that weight loss interventions are effective in reducing the prevalence of obesity-related UI symptoms in women. Bariatric surgery in particular shows greater sustained weight loss and improvements in UI prevalence. Further large scale, randomized control trials assessing the effect of bariatric surgery on women with obesity-related UI are needed to confirm this study's findings
