Minerals, 9(9), (2019): 565, doi: 10.3390/min9090565.The peridotite section of supra-subduction zone ophiolites is often crosscut by pyroxenite veins, reflecting the variety of melts that percolate through the mantle wedge, react, and eventually crystallize in the shallow lithospheric mantle. Understanding the nature of parental melts and the timing of formation of these pyroxenites provides unique constraints on melt infiltration processes that may occur in active subduction zones. This study deciphers the processes of orthopyroxenite and clinopyroxenite formation in the Josephine ophiolite (USA), using new trace and major element analyses of pyroxenite minerals, closure temperatures, elemental profiles, diffusion modeling, and equilibrium melt calculations. We show that multiple melt percolation events are required to explain the variable chemistry of peridotite-hosted pyroxenite veins, consistent with previous observations in the xenolith record. We argue that the Josephine ophiolite evolved in conditions intermediate between back-arc and sub-arc. Clinopyroxenites formed at an early stage of ophiolite formation from percolation of high-Ca boninites. Several million years later, and shortly before exhumation, orthopyroxenites formed through remelting of the Josephine harzburgites through percolation of ultra-depleted low-Ca boninites. Thus, we support the hypothesis that multiple types of boninites can be created at different stages of arc formation and that ophiolitic pyroxenites uniquely record the timing of boninite percolation in subduction zone mantle.This study was supported by National Science Foundation grants EAR-1220440 to V.L.R. and EAR-1624516 to Y.L.     En France, il existe un dispositif particulier d’enseignement dans lequel toutes les fonctions de l’école sont assurées et qui donne accès aux programmes nationaux officiels grâce à une autre langue que le français : ce sont les classes immersives en langue régionale. La même démarche peut être appliquée à la LSF. En effet, l’accès au français seul suppose une dépense cognitive considérable pour les enfants déficients auditifs, pour leur famille et même pour les enseignants.En faire une condition d’accès à l’écrit détourne le passage par l’école de ses fonctions essentielles : la transmission des connaissances, l'accompagnement métacognitif, la socialisation et la régulation des échanges, diverses activités langagières dont le travail métalinguistique indispensable à la lecture, etc. Dans cet article, nous nous proposons de regarder la scène scolaire avec l’éclairage de la didactique des langues, et de faire en sorte que la rééducation du français ne soit pas le seul projecteur allumé dans la scolarité des enfants sourds.Mot  clés : enseignement bilingue, LSF, classes immersives, oralisme, langue d’enseignement, langue première, sourd, déficience auditive

    Sources of dehydration fluids underneath the Kamchatka arc

Nature Communications, 13(1), (2022): 4467, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-022-32211-5.Fluids mediate the transport of subducted slab material and play a crucial role in the generation of arc magmas. However, the source of subduction-derived fluids remains debated. The Kamchatka arc is an ideal subduction zone to identify the source of fluids because the arc magmas are comparably mafic, their source appears to be essentially free of subducted sediment-derived components, and subducted Hawaii-Emperor Seamount Chain (HESC) is thought to contribute a substantial fluid flux to the Kamchatka magmas. Here we show that Tl isotope ratios are unique tracers of HESC contribution to Kamchatka arc magma sources. In conjunction with trace element ratios and literature data, we trace the progressive dehydration and melting of subducted HESC across the Kamchatka arc. In succession, serpentine (250 km depth) break down and produce fluids that contribute to arc magmatism at the Eastern Volcanic Front (EVF), Central Kamchatka Depression (CKD), and Sredinny Ridge (SR), respectively. However, given the Tl-poor nature of serpentine and lawsonite fluids, simultaneous melting of subducted HESC is required to explain the HESC-like Tl isotope signatures observed in EVF and CKD lavas.     Dynamics of reactive distillation for the production of ethyl acetate: experiments at a pilot plant and modelling

    In order to understand the complex behaviour of the reactive distillation process and to be able to provide an accurate design of a reactive column, detailed analyses on both continuous and transient regime become necessary. The objective is the definition of a reliable simulation model, based on experimental data obtained from a real pilot-scale plant device for the heterogeneously catalysed esterification of acetic acid and ethanol to form ethyl acetate and water. The choice of the parameters for the continuous equilibrium model was discussed and the simulation results provided good agreement with experimental data, revealing an interesting sensitivity of the catalyst activity to the feed composition. Once column configuration and operational parameters were validated, dynamic experiments were realized so as to interpret the sensitivity of different disturbances. Feed flow rates, reflux ratio and heat duty were perturbed and the consequent open loop transient responses were identified. The assessment of hydrodynamic parameters and the validation of the transient data allow the definition of a reliable dynamic model that represents tendencies and behaviours of the process well.     Experimental evidence for melt partitioning between olivine and orthopyroxene in partially molten harzburgite

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth 121 (2016): 5776–5793, doi:10.1002/2016JB013122.Observations of dunite channels in ophiolites and uranium series disequilibria in mid-ocean ridge basalt suggest that melt transport in the upper mantle beneath mid-ocean ridges is strongly channelized. We present experimental evidence that spatial variations in mineralogy can also focus melt on the grain scale. This lithologic melt partitioning, which results from differences in the interfacial energies associated with olivine-melt and orthopyroxene-melt boundaries, may complement other melt focusing mechanisms in the upper mantle such as mechanical shear and pyroxene dissolution. We document here lithologic melt partitioning in olivine-/orthopyroxene-basaltic melt samples containing nominal olivine to orthopyroxene ratio of 3 to 2 and melt fractions of 0.02 to 0.20. Experimental samples were imaged using synchrotron-based X-ray microcomputed tomography at a resolution of 700 nm per voxel. By analyzing the local melt fraction distributions associated with olivine and orthopyroxene grains in each sample, we found that the melt partitioning coefficient, i.e., the ratio of melt fraction around olivine to that around orthopyroxene grains, varies between 1.1 and 1.6. The permeability and electrical conductivity of our digital samples were estimated using numerical models and compared to those of samples containing only olivine and basaltic melt.     We study multi-player turn-based games played on (potentially infinite) directed graphs. An outcome is assigned to every play of the game. Each player has a preference relation on the set of outcomes which allows him to compare plays. We focus on the recently introduced notion of weak subgame perfect equilibrium (weak SPE). This is a variant of the classical notion of SPE, where players who deviate can only use strategies deviating from their initial strategy in a finite number of histories. Having an SPE in a game implies having a weak SPE but the contrary is generally false. We propose general conditions on the structure of the game graph and on the preference relations of the players that guarantee the existence of a weak SPE, that additionally is finite-memory. From this general result, we derive two large classes of games for which there always exists a weak SPE: (i) the games with a finite-range outcome function, and (ii) the games with a finite underlying graph and a prefix-independent outcome function. For the second class, we identify conditions on the preference relations that guarantee memoryless strategies for the weak SPE.Comment: 28 page

    Ambient temperature during pregnancy and risk of maternal hypertensive disorders: A time-to-event study in Johannesburg, South Africa

    Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy are a leading cause of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity. We evaluate the effects of ambient temperature on risk of maternal hypertensive disorders throughout pregnancy. We used birth register data for all singleton births (22–43 weeks\u27 gestation) recorded at a tertiary-level hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa, between July 2017–June 2018. Time-to-event analysis was combined with distributed lag non-linear models to examine the effects of mean weekly temperature, from conception to birth, on risk of (i) high blood pressure, hypertension, or gestational hypertension, and (ii) pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, or HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets). Low and high temperatures were defined as the 5th and 95th percentiles of daily mean temperature, respectively. Of 7986 women included, 844 (10.6%) had a hypertensive disorder of which 432 (51.2%) had high blood pressure/hypertension/gestational hypertension and 412 (48.8%) had pre-eclampsia/eclampsia/HELLP. High temperature in early pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia/HELLP. High temperature (23 °C vs 18 °C) in the third and fourth weeks of pregnancy posed the greatest risk, with hazard ratios of 1.76 (95% CI 1.12–2.78) and 1.79 (95% CI 1.19–2.71), respectively. Whereas, high temperatures in mid-late pregnancy tended to protect against pre-eclampsia/eclampsia/HELLP. Low temperature (11°) during the third trimester (from 29 weeks’ gestation) was associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure/hypertension/gestational hypertension, however the strength and statistical significance of low temperature effects were reduced with model adjustments. Our findings support the hypothesis that high temperatures in early pregnancy increase risk of severe hypertensive disorders, likely through an effect on placental development. This highlights the need for greater awareness around the impacts of moderately high temperatures in early pregnancy through targeted advice, and for increased monitoring of pregnant women who conceive during periods of hot weather

    Fluorine and chlorine in mantle minerals and the halogen budget of the Earth’s mantle

The definitive version was published in Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology 172 (2017): 51, doi:10.1007/s00410-017-1368-7.The fluorine (F) and chlorine (Cl) contents of arc magmas have been used to track the composition of subducted components, and the F and Cl contents of MORB have been used to estimate the halogen content of depleted MORB mantle (DMM). Yet, the F and Cl budget of the Earth's upper mantle, and their distribution in peridotite minerals, remains to be constrained. Here we developed a method to measure low concentrations of halogens (≥ 0.4 μg/g F and ≥ 0.3 μg/g Cl) in minerals by secondary ion mass spectroscopy. We present a comprehensive study of F and Cl in natural olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and amphibole in seventeen samples from different tectonic settings. We support the hypothesis that F in olivine is controlled by melt polymerization, and that F in pyroxene is controlled by their Na and Al contents, with some effect of melt polymerization. We infer that Cl compatibility ranks as follows: amphibole > clinopyroxene > olivine ~ orthopyroxene, while F compatibility ranks as follows: amphibole > clinopyroxene > orthopyroxene ≥ olivine, depending on the tectonic context. In addition, we show that F, Cl, Be and B are correlated in pyroxenes and amphibole. F and Cl variations suggest that interaction with slab melts and fluids can significantly alter the halogen content of mantle minerals. In particular, F in oceanic peridotites is mostly hosted in pyroxenes, and proportionally increases in olivine in subduction-related peridotites. The mantle wedge is likely enriched in F compared to un-metasomatized mantle, while Cl is always low (< 1 μg/g) in all tectonic settings studied here. The bulk anhydrous peridotite mantle contains 1.4–31 μg/g F and 0.14–0.38 μg/g Cl. The bulk F content of oceanic-like peridotites (2.1–9.4 μg/g) is lower than DMM estimates, consistent with F-rich eclogite in the source of MORB. Furthermore, the bulk Cl budget of all anhydrous peridotites studied here is lower than previous DMM estimates. Our results indicate that nearly all MORB may be somewhat contaminated by seawater-rich material and that the Cl content of DMM could be overestimated. With this study, we demonstrate that the halogen contents of natural peridotite minerals are a unique tool to understand the cycling of halogens, from ridge settings to subduction zones.This research was supported by grant NSF EAR-P&G 1524311 and DOEI award 18563 to VLR.     Experiments and dynamic modeling of a reactive distillationcolumn for the production of ethyl acetate by consideringthe heterogeneous catalyst pilot complexities

    Great effort has been applied to model and simulate the dynamic behavior of the reactive distillation as a successfulprocess intensification example. However, very little experimental work has been carried out in transient conditions.The work presents a series of experiments for the production of ethyl acetate from esterification of acetic acid andethanol in a reactive distillation pilot column. The steady-state approach performed experiments with both excessof alcohol and stoichiometric feed configuration. Predicted and measured results show good agreement and reveala strong dependency of the structured packing catalyst activity on the pilot geometry and its operating conditions.The transient process behavior of the heterogeneously catalyzed system was deeply investigated and continuousand dynamic data were collected for an equilibrium model validation, after different perturbations on parameters.The experimental validation is shown to be essential to provide realistic hydrodynamic parameters, to understandthe sensitive parameters such as heat losses and to adapt values for the catalyst holdup as a function of the system

    A prospective, observational study of fidaxomicin use for Clostridioides difficile infection in France.

    To describe the characteristics, management and outcomes of hospitalised patients with Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) treated with and without fidaxomicin. This prospective, multicentre, observational study (DAFNE) enrolled hospitalised patients with CDI, including 294 patients treated with fidaxomicin (outcomes recorded over a 3-month period) and 150 patients treated with other CDI therapies during three 1-month periods. The primary endpoint was baseline and CDI characteristics of fidaxomicin-treated patients. At baseline, the fidaxomicin-treated population included immunocompromised patients (39.1%) and patients with severe (59.2%) and recurrent (36.4%) CDI. Fidaxomicin was associated with a high rate of clinical cure (92.2%) and low CDI recurrence (16.3% within 3 months). Clinical cure rates were ≥90% in patients aged ≥65 years, those receiving concomitant antibiotics and those with prior or severe CDI. There were 121/296 (40.9%) patients with adverse events (AEs), 5.4% with fidaxomicin-related AEs and 1.0% with serious fidaxomicin-related AEs. No fidaxomicin-related deaths were reported. Fidaxomicin is an effective and well-tolerated CDI treatment in a real-world setting in France, which included patients at high risk of adverse outcomes.Trial registration: Description of the use of fidaxomicin in hospitalised patients with documented Clostridium difficile infection and the management of these patients (DAFNE), NCT02214771, www.ClinicalTrials.gov
