Développement des Enseignements Pratiques et Modernes et Croissance Economique en France et en Prusse à la fin du 19ème siècle.

Dans cet article, nous proposons une analyse cliométrique de la contribution de l’essor des enseignements pratiques et modernes à la croissance économique en France et en Prusse de 1870 à la veille de la première guerre mondiale. Dans une perspective historique et institutionnelle, notre approche met en exergue les enjeux de nature économique qui ont motivé le développement de filières pratiques et modernes d’enseignement. Partant de cette analyse, nous testons au niveau empirique l’hypothèse d’une contribution significative de l’essor de cette nouvelle scolarisation en France et en Prusse sur le taux de croissance respectif des deux économies. Notre étude tend alors à remettre en question l’intuition d’une contribution supérieure de ces enseignements, par rapport aux enseignements généraux, sur la croissance des économies française et prussienne de 1870 à la veille de la première guerre mondiale.Education, Croissance économique, Cliométrie.

Instruction publique et progrès économique chez Condorcet.

Dans cet article, nous nous intéressons à une dimension particulière de la pensée de Condorcet : la question de l'instruction publique dans son rapport au progrès économique. Nous défendons l'idée qu'à côté de sa dimension politique fréquemment mise en lumière, le plan condorcétien d'instruction, par son organisation et ses principes, est, entre autres fins, dirigé vers un objectif de progrès économique. Nous argumentons ce point de vue en présentant le lien entre les réflexions de Condorcet sur l'innovation et le projet d'instruction publique. Nous montrons ainsi que la pensée de Condorcet soutient déjà l'idée du rôle de l'éducation sur le progrès technologique et la croissance affrmé par les théories modernes du capital humain.Condorcet, instruction publique, croissance économique

Chronic neuropathic pain in spinal cord injury patients: What relevant additional clinical exams should be performed?

AbstractObjectiveStudy the indications and level of evidence of clinical exams that might be relevant in exploring the causes of neuropathic pain in spinal cord injury patients.MethodLiterature review from three databases: PubMed, Embase, Pascal.ResultsDisparity and heterogeneity of the answers given by the attendees to the experts conference of the French Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (SOFMER) and the physicians surveyed via the SOFMER website. These results corroborate the shortage of available data on this topic in the literature. From this analysis, we can however validate spinal MRI imaging as a mandatory exam for the diagnosis of post-traumatic syringomyelia (cystic myelopathy) – this exam can even be considered a Gold Standard. Furthermore, we can also recommend using electrodiagnostic studies for compressive neuropathies. However, it is not possible to validate the relevance of additional clinical exams for radicular pain, segmental deafferentation pain, central deafferentation pain as well as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) type 1; for these types of pain we can only formulate experts recommendations in light of the dearth of available data on the subject.ConclusionFor the neuropathic pain of spinal cord injury patients’ additional clinical exams should be used in the framework of an etiological diagnosis

How Social Networks Shape Our Beliefs: A Natural Experiment among Future French Politicians

This paper shows how a public policy shapes convergence of beliefs through newly-formed social networks, with a focus on political opinion. We use a unique natural experiment that randomly assigns students into first-year groups at a French college that forms future top politicians. Pairs of students in the same group are much more likely to become friends. The randomized group membership serves as instrumental variable in a dyadic regression of differences in beliefs on friendship. We find that students’ political opinions converge particularly strongly between friends, reaching 11% of a standard deviation only after 6 months. Convergence is strongest among pairs least likely to become friends without the randomized exposure, or friends whose characteristics are the most different. While there is evidence of homophily in network formation, it does not seem to affect the estimates of convergence, except among very similar friends. The same strategy shows that a longer network distance implies slower convergence

Friendship Networks and Political Opinions: A Natural Experiment among Future French Politicians

We study how friendship shapes students' political opinions in a natural experiment. We use the indicator whether two students were exogenously assigned to a short-term "integration group", unrelated to scholar activities and dissolved before the school year, as instrumental variable for their friendship, to estimate the effect of friendship on pairwise political opinion outcomes in dyadic regressions. After six months, friendship causes a reduction of differences in opinions by one quarter of the mean difference. It likely works through a homophily-enforced mechanism, by which friendship causes politically-similar students to join political associations together, which reinforces their political similarity. The effect is strong among initially similar pairs, but absent in dissimilar pairs. Friendship affects opinion gaps by reducing divergence, therefore polarization and extremism, without forcing individuals' views to converge. Une nécropole aristocratique rurale des II^e-III^e s. à Vâton (Falaise, Calvados) dans la cité des Viducasses

International audienceDuring a programmed excavation conducted in 2008 and 2009, three funerary monuments could be analysed. They were built in the second half of the 2nd c. and the beginning of the 3rd c. AD, near the seat of an agricultural estate. The oldest one can be identified to a mausoleum with two funerary enclosures set beside it. The three inhumation burials are noticeable by the pomp given to the laying-out of the burial place and the grave goods deposited next to the bodies. Symbol of a privileged social status, these monuments are probably the remains of a family cemetery that five centuries later attracted once more a series of inhumation burials in the second half of the 7th c. and the beginning of the following century. In the meantime a cremation burial was laid out in the close vicinity of these monuments.Au cours des années 2008 et 2009, une opération de fouille programmée a permis d’analyser trois monuments funéraires antiques installés dans la seconde moitié du IIe s. et au début du IIIe s. apr. J.-C. à proximité d’un siège de domaine agricole. Le monument le plus ancien peut être identifié à un mausolée contre lequel deux enclos funéraires ont été accolés. Les trois inhumations se remarquent par le faste de la pompe funèbre qui concerne les aménagements du sépulcre et les offrandes déposées auprès des défunts. Signes d’un statut social privilégié, ces trois monuments constituent les vestiges d’une probable nécropole familiale qui, cinq siècles plus tard, attire à nouveau une série d’inhumations implantées au cours de la seconde moitié du VIIe s. et au début du siècle suivant. Entre-temps, une crémation est conduite à proximité immédiate de ces monuments

New Physics Searches Using Precision Spectroscopy

The exceptional precision attainable using modern spectroscopic techniques provides a promising avenue to search for signatures of physics beyond the Standard Model in tiny shifts of the energy levels of atoms and molecules. We briefly review three categories of new-physics searches based in precision measurements: tests of QED using measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron and the value of the fine-structure constant, searches for time variation of the fundamental constants, and searches for a permanent electric dipole moment of an electron or atomic nucleus.Comment: Prepared for Advances in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics vol 6
